Open-world semi-supervised learning (Open-world SSL) for node classification, that classifies unlabeled nodes into seen classes or multiple novel classes, is a practical but under-explored problem in the graph community. As only seen classes have human labels, they are usually better learned than novel classes, and thus exhibit smaller intra-class variances within the embedding space (named as imbalance of intra-class variances between seen and novel classes). Based on empirical and theoretical analysis, we find the variance imbalance can negatively impact the model performance. Pre-trained feature encoders can alleviate this issue via producing compact representations for novel classes. However, creating general pre-trained encoders for various types of graph data has been proven to be challenging. As such, there is a demand for an effective method that does not rely on pre-trained graph encoders. In this paper, we propose an IMbalance-A ware method named OpenIMA for Open-world semi-supervised node classification, which trains the node classification model from scratch via contrastive learning with bias-reduced pseudo labels. Extensive experiments on seven popular graph benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of OpenIMA, and the source code has been available on GitHub11https://***/RUCKBReasoning/OpenIMA. © 2024 IEEE.

A large-scale dynamically weighted directed network(DWDN)involving numerous entities and massive dynamic interaction is an essential data source in many big-data-related applications,like in a terminal interaction pattern analysis system(TIPAS).It can be represented by a high-dimensional and incomplete(HDI)tensor whose entries are mostly *** such an HDI tensor contains a wealth knowledge regarding various desired patterns like potential links in a DWDN.A latent factorization-of-tensors(LFT)model proves to be highly efficient in extracting such knowledge from an HDI tensor,which is commonly achieved via a stochastic gradient descent(SGD)***,an SGD-based LFT model suffers from slow convergence that impairs its efficiency on large-scale *** address this issue,this work proposes a proportional-integralderivative(PID)-incorporated LFT *** constructs an adjusted instance error based on the PID control principle,and then substitutes it into an SGD solver to improve the convergence *** studies on two DWDNs generated by a real TIPAS show that compared with state-of-the-art models,the proposed model achieves significant efficiency gain as well as highly competitive prediction accuracy when handling the task of missing link prediction for a given DWDN.

Relation extraction and classification, collectively referred to as relation discovery, are fundamental tasks in the ontology construction process. In recent years, numerous studies have dedicated their efforts to devising hybrid approaches, supporting inclusive innovation in computational linguistics and ontology engineering. These approaches merge traditional methods with Machine Learning (ML) or Deep Learning (DL) techniques to tackle relation discovery tasks. This research examines the applicability and efficacy of four distinct models— Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)—in relation extraction and classification. Two different datasets, ACL RD-TEC 2.0 and ACLRelAcS, are utilized, alongside two distinct text representation methodologies, BOW and TF-IDF-BOW. An in-depth analysis of the results, including the advantages and limitations of each model, is presented in the results and discussion sections. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2025.

The decline of conventional synchronous generators in the modern power system is driven by the increasing demand for low-inertia/inertia-less renewable energy sources (RES), consequently leading to the growing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the power system. The incorporation of low-inertia/inertia-less IBRs makes the monitoring and damping of low-frequency electromechanical oscillations (EMOs) crucial. While Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) control introduces virtual inertia into the power system, it does not maximize energy capture from RES as effectively as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) does, as it should maintain a power reserve to provide the inertial support and damping. In this study, switching IBRs between MPPT and VSG controls based on an EMO index (EMOI) threshold is proposed to mitigate the emergence of EMO. The impact of the switching control of IBRs is illustrated for a modified two-area, four-machine power system with two large solar photovoltaic plants. Typical results are presented from a simulation on real-time digital simulator (RTDS) to show improved EMOI.

In many fields, time series prediction is gaining more and more attention, e.g., air pollution, geological hazards, and network traffic prediction. Water quality prediction is based on historical data to predict future water quality. However, it is difficult to learn a representation map from a time series that captures the trends and fluctuations to effectively remove noise from time series data and capture complex nonlinear relationships. To solve these problems, this work proposes a time series prediction model, called PSGT for short, which integrates Patch Savitsky-Golay filtering and Transformer. First, this work adopts a Patching method to embed sub-time series data and obtains the trends and semantic information of the time series. Second, it uses the Savitsky-Golay filtering to effectively remove the noise data in the patch and improve the prediction accuracy. Third, it uses a Transformer mechanism to address the nonlinear problem of water quality time series and improve long-term prediction capability. Two real-world datasets are utilized to evaluate the proposed PSGT, and experiments prove that PSGT performs better than other benchmark models by at least 6%. © 2024 IEEE.

3GPP standards (e.g., LTE and 5G New Radio (NR)) have revolutionized commercial broadband access. Unfortunately, the openness of 3GPP specifications and high-level of adaptability make fifth-generation (5G) networks increasingly sensitive to unsophisticated attacks in the network. While 5G NR has introduced frequency hopping (FH) for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), there has not been a unified approach to designing the FH patterns in practical 5G systems. In this paper, we investigate the multi-user FH design problem at the physical resource grid of the 5G communication networks. We present various criteria for FH pattern design and propose two algorithms that are implementable with low complexity. The first scheme utilizes known interference patterns to design a set of user equipment (UE) FH patterns that are immune to interfering attacks. The second scheme leverages interference statistics and minimizes the expected number of hits by the interferer. Through numerical simulations and analytical modeling, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed schemes, which outperform the uniform FH pattern and achieve near-optimal performance. © 2023 IEEE.

Due to the development of hacking programs, it has become easy to penetrate systems. Hence, there is a need for strong security mechanisms. The use of traditional passwords has become insufficient to secure systems. Biometric authentication is now widely used for security applications, and it has proven to be superior compared to traditional authentication methods. However, two issues need to be considered in biometric systems. The first is not to keep biometric data in its original form in the database. If biometric traits are hacked, they will no longer be of use. Biometric data should be kept in cancelable forms for reuse. The second issue is the reliance on a single biometric, which limits the verification accuracy. This can be solved by using a multimodal biometric system. Using steganography and cryptography, this paper introduces a cancelable multimodal biometric system. As voiceprints, facial images, and fingerprint images are used. In this paper, the verification is performed through the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of the voiceprints. Steganography is used as a tool to secure features extracted from voiceprints by embedding them into the facial image using block-based singular value decomposition (BSVD). Double random phase encoding (DRPE) is utilized as an encryption algorithm to generate the final cancelable templates. To increase the level of system security, fingerprint images are used as random phase masks (RPMs). Verification is performed by estimating the correlation between registered and test MFCCs. The correlation value is then compared with a threshold value, which is calculated using the distribution curves for the genuine and imposter correlations. Equal error rate (EER) values close to zero and an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AROC) that is close to one are obtained from the simulation results, demonstrating the outstanding performance of the suggested system.
