Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision that involves accurately locating and classifying objects within images or video frames. In remote sensing, this task is particularly challenging due to the high resolution, multi-scale features, and diverse ground object characteristics inherent in satellite and UAV imagery. These challenges necessitate more advanced approaches for effective object detection in such environments. While deep learning methods have achieved remarkable success in remote sensing object detection, they typically rely on large amounts of labeled data. Acquiring sufficient labeled data, particularly for novel or rare objects, is both challenging and time-consuming in remote sensing scenarios, limiting the generalization capabilities of existing models. To address these challenges, few-shot learning (FSL) has emerged as a promising approach, aiming to enable models to learn new classes from limited labeled examples. Building on this concept, few-shot object detection (FSOD) specifically targets object detection challenges in data-limited conditions. However, the generalization capability of FSOD models, particularly in remote sensing, is often constrained by the complex and diverse characteristics of the objects present in such environments. In this paper, we propose the Generalization-Enhanced Few-Shot Object Detection (GE-FSOD) model to improve the generalization capability in remote sensing FSOD tasks. Our model introduces three key innovations: the Cross-Level Fusion Pyramid Attention Network (CFPAN) for enhanced multi-scale feature representation, the Multi-Stage Refinement Region Proposal Network (MRRPN) for more accurate region proposals, and the Generalized Classification Loss (GCL) for improved classification performance in few-shot scenarios. As the utilization of supercapacitors in power system applications continues to increase, it is important to observe their behavior under transient and long-term operations in order to understand their impact on power grids. A real-time reconfigurable hardware testbed (HTB) is a power network emulator that provides flexibility to study various power system scenarios. This paper presents an emulation of a supercapacitor for a photovoltaic (PV) system on the HTB platform such that its dynamic behavior during power system scenarios can be observed. The developed emulator on the HTB is verified by comparing the emulation results with the model developed in MATLAB/Simulink. The experimental results of the emulator are consistent with the simulation results under the grid support scenarios. This supercapacitor emulator can be potentially used for various power system scenarios in addition to the PV applications presented in this paper. © 2023 IEEE.

Both the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) and messaging extraterrestrial intelligence (METI) struggle with a strong indeterminacy in what data to look for and when to do so. This has led to attempts at finding both fundamental mathematical limits for SETI as well as benchmarks regarding specific signals. Due to the natural correspondence, previous information-theoretic work has been formulated in terms of communication between extraterrestrial and human civilizations. In this work, we instead formalize SETI as a detection problem, specifically (quantum) one-shot asymmetric hypothesis testing. This framework holds for all detection scenarios-in particular, it is relevant for detection of any technosignature, including quantum mechanical signals. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to consider the applicability of SETI for quantum signals. Using this formalism, we are able to unify the analysis of fundamental limits and benchmarking specific signals. To show a distinction between METI and SETI, we show that significantly weaker signals may be useful in detection in comparison to communication. Furthermore, the framework is computationally efficient, so it can be implemented by practicing astrobiologists.

Vision language models (VLMs) have achieved impressive progress in diverse applications, becoming a prevalent research direction. In this paper, we build FIRE, a feedback-refinement dataset, consisting of 1.1M multi-turn conversations that are derived from 27 source datasets, empowering VLMs to spontaneously refine their responses based on user feedback across diverse tasks. To scale up the data collection, FIRE is collected in two components: FIRE-100K and FIRE-1M, where FIRE-100K is generated by GPT-4V, and FIRE-1M is freely generated via models trained on FIRE-100K. Then, we build FIRE-Bench, a benchmark to comprehensively evaluate the feedback-refining capability of VLMs, which contains 11K feedback-refinement conversations as the test data, two evaluation settings, and a model to provide feedback for VLMs. We develop the FIRE-LLaVA model by fine-tuning LLaVA on FIRE-100K and FIRE-1M, which shows remarkable feedback-refining capability on FIRE-Bench and outperforms untrained VLMs by 50%, making more efficient user-agent interactions and underscoring the significance of the FIRE dataset. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Reverberation is ubiquitous in everyday listening environments, from meeting rooms to concert halls and recording studios. While reverberation is usually described by the reverberation time, getting further insight concerning the characteristics of a room requires to conduct acoustic measurements and calculate each reverberation parameter manually. In this study, we propose ReverbNet, an end-to-end deep learning-based system to non-intrusively estimate multiple reverberation parameters from a single speech utterance. The proposed approach is evaluated using simulated room reverberation by two popular effect processors. We show that the proposed approach can jointly estimate multiple reverberation parameters from speech signals and can generalise to unseen speakers and diverse simulated environments. The results also indicate that the use of multiple branches disentangles the embedding space from misalignments between input features and subtasks. © (2022) by the Audio engineering Society All rights reserved.

Real and effective regulation of contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants requires unbiased and truthful monitoring. Blockchain has emerged not only as an approach that provides verifiable economical interactions but also as a mechanism to keep the measurement, monitoring, incentivation of environmental conservationist practices and enforcement of policy. Here, we present a survey of areas in what blockchain has been considered as a response to concerns on keeping an accurate recording of environmental practices to monitor levels of pollution and management of environmental practices. We classify the applications of blockchain into different segments of concerns, such as greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste, water, plastics, food waste, and circular economy, and show the objectives for the addressed concerns. We also classify the different blockchains and the explored and designed properties as identified for the proposed solutions. Distributed Offloading in Multi-Access Edge Computing systems: A Mean-Field Perspective

With the widespread adoption of internet-of-things (IoT) devices capable of supporting numerous intelligent applications, the demand for computational power has surged dramatically. Multi-access edge computing (MEC) technology is a promising solution to assist the often power-constrained IoT devices by providing additional computing resources for time-sensitive tasks. In this paper, we consider the problem of optimal task offloading in MEC systems with due consideration of the timeliness and scalability issues under two scenarios of equitable and priority access to the edge server (ES). In the first scenario, we consider a MEC system consisting of N devices assisted by one ES, where the devices can split task execution between a local processor and the ES, with equitable access to the ES. In the second scenario, we consider a MEC system consisting of one primary user, N secondary users and one ES. The primary user has priority access to the ES while the secondary users have equitable access to the ES amongst themselves. In both scenarios, due to the power consumption associated with utilizing the local resource and task offloading, the devices must optimize their actions. Additionally, since the ES is a shared resource, other users’ offloading activity serves to increase latency incurred by each user. We thus model both scenarios using a large user non-cooperative game framework. However, the presence of a large number of users makes it nearly impossible to compute the equilibrium offloading policies for each user, which would require a significant communication overhead to exchange information with each other. Thus, to alleviate such scalability issues, we invoke the paradigm of mean-field games to design completely distributed low complexity algorithms for the computation of approximate Nash equilibrium policies for each user based on only their local information.
