OFDM-structure based waveform designs for integrated sensing and communication

The future sixth-generation(6G) paradigm aims to seamlessly integrate communication and environmental sensing capabilities into a single radio signal, promising improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness through simultaneous data communications and environmental perception. At the core of this evolution, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) and its advanced waveforms emerge as pivotal for integrated sensing and communications(ISAC). This study introduces a concise and unified ISAC waveform design framework based on orthogonal multicarriers. This framework supports versatile applications of OFDM and its derivative waveforms within a generalized ISAC system, marking a significant leap in integrating communication and sensing capabilities. A distinguishing feature of this framework is its adaptability,allowing users to intelligently select modulation strategies based on their specific environmental needs. This adaptability optimizes performance across diverse scenarios. Central to our innovations is the proposal of discrete Fourier transformspread OFDM with index modulation(DFT-S-OFDM-IM). This framework is paired with newly proposed signal processing methods for single-input single-output and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) systems. Extensive evaluations highlight DFT-S-OFDM-IM's superiority, including dramatically reduced peak-to-average power ratios(PAPRs), competitive communication performance, and exceptional sensing capabilities, striking an elegant balance between communication capacity and environmental sensing precision.

This paper focuses on the challenge of jointly optimizing location and path loss exponent (PLE) in distancedependent noise. Departing from the conventional independent noise model used in localization and path loss exponent estimation problems, we consider a more realistic model incorporating distance-dependent noise variance, as revealed in recent theoretical analyses and experimental results. The distance-dependent noise introduces a complex noise model with unknown noise power and PLE, resulting in an exceptionally challenging nonconvex and nonlinear optimization problem. In this study, we address a joint localization and path loss exponent estimation problem encompassing distance-dependent noise, unknown parameters, and uncertainties in sensor node locations. To surmount the intractable nonlinear and non-convex objective function inherent in the problem, we introduce a variational Bayesian learning-based framework that enables the joint optimization of localization, path loss exponent, and reference noise parameters by leveraging an effective approximation to the true posterior distribution. Furthermore, the proposed joint learning algorithm provides an iterative closed-form solution and exhibits superior performance in terms of computational complexity compared to existing algorithms. computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm approaches the performance of the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB), achieves localization performance comparable to the (maximum likelihood-Gaussian message passing) ML-GMP algorithm in some cases, and outperforms the other comparison algorithm in all cases. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

The authors investigate the potential of pulsed power technology in recycling of E-waste. Applying the pulsed discharge can separate composite materials into plastic and metal. In this study, pulsed discharge was applied to indium tin oxide (ITO) coated plastic films. We used two electrode types: rod-To-rod electrode and a pair of flat plate electrodes to investigate the effect of electrode structure on the metal removal area in detail. A series of single pulse discharges were applied at various electrode distances. As a result, it was revealed that metal can be removed over a wide range by the pulsed discharge using a pair of flat plate electrodes. When the gap between the electrodes was 30 mm, the removal area by the flat plate electrodes was approximately 3.4 times that by the rod electrodes. Analysis of the current density also revealed that the metal removal area was greatly affected by the current density. © 2024 Eindhoven University of Technology.

This study deals with the coordination of surge protection devices (SPD) in photovoltaic systems (PV). A PV farm model was developed in MATLAB Simulink with all the main components, solar panels, converter, grounding system, power transformer, cables in the DC and AC branches with their capacitances, and surge protection device throughout the installation. It was found that when lightning strikes the grounding system or in the vicinity of the PV installation, the coordination among SPD types 1, 2, and 3 is lost. Miscoordination can cause damage to several elements of the PV system, mainly the inverters. Finally, solutions were proposed to avoid SPD miscoordination during lightning strikes. © 2024 IEEE.

An advanced hybrid renewable energy collecting and storage system prototype that utilizes water flow as its primary power source. Additionally, the system incorporates an energy monitoring system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The device effectively harnesses energy from the movement of water, storing it for future use in low-voltage applications. It demonstrates a maximum daily energy capture capacity of about 100Wh. The energy monitoring system, based on the Internet of Things (IoT), enables the real-time and remote monitoring of energy harvesting and usage. We thoroughly assessed the energy harvesting component across different situations to identify the crucial parameters that impact energy output. The results of our study demonstrate that several elements, including the spatial separation 'between the energy harvester and the water source, Water flow' speed, sensor orientation, and sensor density, all play significant roles in determining the quantity of energy collected. This research shows that it is possible to integrate IoT technology with hydropower renewable energy systems. It provides significant perspectives on enhancing energy extraction efficiency in practical scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Empirical robustness evaluation (RE) of deep learning models against adversarial perturbations involves solving non-trivial constrained optimization problems. Recent work has shown that these RE problems can be reliably solved by a general-purpose constrained-optimization solver, PyGRANSO with Constraint-Folding (PWCF). In this paper, we take advantage of PWCF and other existing numerical RE algorithms to explore distinct solution patterns in solving RE problems with various combinations of losses, perturbation models, and optimization algorithms. We then provide extensive discussions on the implications of these patterns on current robustness evaluation and adversarial training. In VANETs, the important and effective applications of vehicle localization include safety and communication applications. Thus, it is difficult to get very accurate localization in the dynamic and often very fluctuating environment of VANET. This research responds to this challenge with a keen thrust on improving vehicle localization using the Mobility Data Verification process. The primary goal of this work is to achieve high accuracy of vehicle positioning within VANET by checking the coherence of mobility data of moving vehicles. Hence, we present a concept that builds upon Mobility Data Verification to provide real-time location details from vehicles. Both GPS and onboard sensors feed this method, which uses a multi-level verification to flag out or eliminate the errors of deliberately spoofed data points. We use simulations to evaluate and validate the effectiveness of the proposed verification approach. As the proposed system, our previously developed and fine-tuned weighted localization (OWL) strategy does so. The performance evaluation results suggest that our proposed solution is feasible to distinguish automobiles that are not trustworthy and improve the performance of the localization algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.
