Index modulation-Aided orthogonal frequency division multiple access (IM-OFDMA) is envisioned as an advanced solution for the upcoming wireless communication systems. This paper proposes a highly efficient scheme by combining multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and IM-OFDMA to leverage both techniques collectively, offering a new possibility to boost spectrum efficiency compared with the IM-OFDMA and MIMO-OFDMA schemes. The basic principle of the resulting MIMO-IM-OFDMA scheme is to independently perform the IMOFDMA process on each transmit antenna, thereby achieving higher diversity. Considering different system configurations, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the MIMO-IMOFDMA scheme not only enhances the communication error's performance but also improves the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional IM-OFDMA and MIMO-OFDMA schemes. © 2024 IEEE.

No-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) aims to evaluate image quality without using the original reference images. Since the early NR-IQA methods based on distortion types were only applicable to specific distortion scenarios, and lack of practicality, it is challenging to designing a universal NR-IQA method. In this article, a multibranch convolutional neural network (MB-CNN) based NR-IQA method is proposed, which includes a spatial-domain feature extractor, a gradient-domain feature extractor, and a weight mechanism. The spatial-domain feature extractor aims to extract the distortion features from the spatial domain. The gradient-domain feature extractor is used to guide the spatial-domain feature extractor to pay more attention to the distortions of the structure information. Particularly, the spatial-domain feature extractor uses the hierarchical feature merge module to realize multiscale feature representation, and the gradient-domain feature extractor uses pyramidal convolution to extract the multiscale structure information of the distorted image. In addition, a position vector is proposed to build the weight mechanism by considering the position relationships between patches and its entire image for improving the final prediction performance. We conduct the experiments on five representative databases: LIVE, TID2013, CSIQ, LIVE MD and Waterloo Exploration Database, and the experimental results show that the proposed NR-IQA method achieves the state-of-the-art performance, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed NR-IQA method. This paper proposes a joint design of probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) and precoding to enhance the sum-rate performance of multi-user visible light communications (VLC) broadcast channels subject to signal amplitude constraint. In the proposed design, the transmission probabilities of bipolar M-pulse amplitude modulation (M-PAM) symbols for each user and the transmit precoding matrix are jointly optimized to improve the sum-rate performance. The joint design problem is shown to be a complex non-convex problem due to the non-convexity of the objective function. To tackle the problem, the firefly algorithm (FA), a nature-inspired heuristic optimization approach, is employed to solve a local optima to the original non-convex optimization problem. The FA-based approach, however, suffers from high computational complexity. Therefore, we propose a low-complexity design based on zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, which is solved using an alternating optimization (AO) approach. Simulation results reveal that the proposed joint design with PCS significantly improves the sum-rate performance compared to the conventional design with uniform signaling. Some insights into the optimal symbol distributions of the two joint design approaches are also provided. © 2024 IEEE.

Measuring Hemoglobin (Hb) levels is required for the assessment of different health conditions, such as anemia, a condition where there are insufficient healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to the body’s tissues. Measuring Hb levels requires the extraction of a blood sample, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. This is an invasive procedure that may add challenges to the continuous monitoring of Hb levels. Noninvasive techniques, including imaging and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals combined with machine learning techniques, are being investigated for continuous measurements of Hb. However, the availability of real data to train the algorithms is limited to establishing a generalization and implementation of such techniques in healthcare settings. In this work, we present a computational model based on Monte Carlo simulations that can generate multispectral PPG signals that cover a broad range of Hb levels. These signals are then used to train a Deep Learning (DL) model to estimate hemoglobin levels. Through this approach, valuable insights about the relationships between PPG signals, oxygen saturation, and Hb levels are learned by the DL model. The signals were generated by propagating a source in a volume that contains the skin tissue properties and the target physiological parameters. The source consisted of plane waves using the 660nm and 890 nm wavelengths. A range of 6 g/dL to 18dL Hb values was used to generate 468 PPGs to train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The initial results show high accuracy in detecting low levels of Hb. To the best of our knowledge, the complexity of biological interactions involved in measuring hemoglobin levels has yet to be fully modeled. The presented model offers an alternative approach to studying the effects of changes in Hb levels on the PPGs signal morphology and its interaction with other physiological parameters that are present in the optical path of the measured signals. © 2023 SPIE.

With the increasing water shortage and climatic uncertainty, creative strategies for effective water management in agriculture are necessary. This research investigates the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), with solar-powered Internet of Things (IoT) networks to enhance water utilization in agricultural activities. The proposed system facilitates accurate irrigation scheduling using real-time data from soil moisture sensors, meteorological stations, and crop health monitoring devices. The ANN model analyses this data to predict ideal irrigation schedules and volumes, minimizing water waste while improving crop yields. The solar-powered IoT framework provides sustainability and reduces dependence on traditional energy sources. Field trials indicate that the AI-enhanced system may promote water saving by as much as 30% relative to traditional irrigation techniques. Moreover, using AI enables adaptive learning, enabling the system to enhance its irrigation tactics using historical and real-time data. This novel method conserves water resources and fosters sustainable agriculture practices, coinciding with global initiatives to address water shortages and assure food security. The findings underscore the potential of technology-based solutions to revolutionize agricultural water management for a sustainable future. © 2025 IEEE.

One of the most important subjects in statistics is the theory of estimation. In this paper, we consider the generalized Bayes shrinkage estimator of the mean vector for multivariate normal distribution with the unknown covariance matrix under balanced quadratic loss. Also, we find the minimax and admissible estimator of the mean vector based on the generalized Bayes estimator. We obtain Stein’s unbiased risk estimator (SURE) threshold with a generalized Bayes shrinkage estimator and we find the wavelet shrinkage generalized Bayes SURE. Finally, we present a simulation study to test the validity of the generalized Bayes SURE and the concrete compressive strength dataset is given to test the efficiency of this estimator in denoising. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Secure Multiparty Computation (SMC) facilitates secure collaboration among multiple parties while safeguarding the privacy of their confidential data. This paper introduces a two-party quantum SMC protocol designed for evaluating binary Boolean functions using single qubits. Complexity analyses demonstrate a reduction of 66.7% in required quantum resources, achieved by utilizing single qubits instead of multi-particle entangled states. However, the quantum communication cost has increased by 40% due to the amplified exchange of qubits among participants. Furthermore, we bolster security by performing additional quantum operations along the y-axis of the Bloch sphere, effectively hiding the output from potential adversaries. We design the corresponding quantum circuit and implement the proposed protocol on the IBM Qiskit platform, yielding reliable outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

A general topology capable of implementing integer and non-integer versions of filters with exponential form of their gain responses in the frequency domain, is introduced in this work. The derivation of the topology is performed by employing a curve-fitting method for approximating the gain response, in each case. The versatility of the presented scheme is confirmed through experimental results obtained using a Field Programmable Analog Array device. A practical design example is also provided, where a combination of the introduced stages is utilized for denoising an electrocardiogram signal. © 2024 IEEE.
