Pedestrian-related accidents account for an estimated 20-25% of the approximately 1.19 million road fatalities occurring annually, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced detection systems in surveillance and smart transportation to mitigate such incidents. The escalating demand for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) in modern surveillance and transportation systems has become a solution to that problem but highlighted significant challenges in reducing inference times of machine learning models, particularly on constrained hardware. The maximum permissible latency for most vehicular applications ranges from 6 to 20 milliseconds based on the application. When tested on an 8GB RAM setup using the NTU, LLVIP, and VIRAT datasets, YOLOv8n achieved a minimum inference time of approximately 200 milliseconds per frame, making it unsuitable for URLLC applications despite 8GB RAM being an adequate hardware setup for edge devices. This research introduces a new two-stage pipeline that integrates Oculi's Sensing and Processing Unit (SPU) simulation with the YOLOv8n one-stage object detection model to enhance pedestrian detection, thereby addressing these challenges. By leveraging Regions of Interest (ROIs) generated by Oculi's SPU, our approach optimizes the input data for the YOLO model, substantially reducing computational overhead and thus making it suitable for URLLC applications. This integration can lead to a reduction in inference time by up to 93% in the tested frames when being compared to YOLOv8n pre-trained model. © 2024 IEEE.

Swallowing assessment is a crucial task to reveal swallowing abnormalities. There are multiple modalities to analyze swallowing kinematics, such as videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), which is the gold standard method, and high-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), which is a noninvasive technique that uses a triaxial accelerometer attached to the patient's neck. Deep learning models play an essential role in data driven analysis of swallowing landmarks using VFSS and/or HRCA as input data. Most of these models utilize convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Here, we investigate the ability of transformers to analyze swallowing kinematics;specifically upper esophageal sphincter opening and laryngeal vestibule closure using HRCA signals. We tested the model using an independent test dataset to assess the generalizability of the proposed network. The proposed network achieved an average detection accuracy higher than 90% and 85% for both segmentation tasks, which outperform the hybrid neural networks from the literature, and the model obtained high-performance measures for the independent dataset, showing the transformers' ability to generalize on unseen data. © 2024 IEEE.

Digital twins are virtual representations of real-world structures that can be used for modeling and simulation. Because of digital twins’ ability to simulate complex structural behaviors, they also have potential for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Video-based SHM techniques are advantageous due to the lower installation/maintenance costs, analysis in high-spatial resolution, and its non-contact monitoring features. Both digital twins and video-based techniques hold particular interest in the fields of non-destructive evaluation, damage identification, and modal analysis. An effective use of these techniques for SHM applications still poses several challenges. Neural radiance fields (NeRFs) are an emerging and promising type of neural network that can render photorealistic novel views of a complex scene using a sparse data set of 2D images. Originally, NeRF was designed to capture static scenes, but recent work has extended its capability to capture dynamic scenes which has implications for medium and long-term SHM. However, to date, most NeRFs use frame-based images and videos as input data. Frame-based video monitoring approaches result in redundant information derived from the fact that, for structural dynamics monitoring, only a small number of active pixels record the actual dynamical changes in the structure, resulting in intensive computational loads for data processing and storage. A promising alternative is event-based imaging, which only records pixel-wise changes on the illumination of a scene. Event-based imaging creates a sparse set of data, while accurately capturing the dynamics. The work proposes a method to extract the dynamics of a structure using a generated digital twin. Using Unreal Engine 5, digital twins of rigid and non-rigid structures were generated. The digital twin model was then used along with an event-based camera simulator to generate event-based data. Learning High-Resolution representations is essential for semantic segmentation. Convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures with downstream and upstream propagation flow are popular for segmentation in medical diagnosis. However, due to performing spatial downsampling and upsampling in multiple stages, information loss is inexorable. On the contrary, connecting layers densely on high spatial resolution is computationally expensive. In this work, we devise a Loose Dense Connection Strategy to connect neurons in subsequent layers with reduced parameters. On top of that, using a m-way Tree structure for feature propagation we propose Receptive Field Chain Network (RFC-Net) that learns high-resolution global features on a compressed computational space. Our experiments demonstrates that RFC-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance on Kvasir and CVC-ClinicDB benchmarks for Polyp segmentation. Smoothing Neural Network for Non-Lipschitz Optimization with Linear Inequality Constraints

This paper presents a smoothing neural network to solve a class of non-Lipschitz optimization problem with linear inequality constraints. The proposed neural network is modelled with a differential inclusion equation, which introduces the smoothing approximate techniques. Under certain conditions, we prove that the trajectory of neural network reaches the feasible region in finite time and stays there thereafter, and that any accumulation point of the solution is a stationary point of the original optimization problem. Furthermore, if all stationary points of the optimization problem are isolated,then the trajectory converges to a stationary point of the optimization problem. Two typical numerical examples are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed neural network.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to study the structural makeup of the brain and analyse several neurological disorders and diseased areas. For the adoption of preventative measures, early recognition of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients is essential. Here, a thorough inspection of the tissue arrangements obtained by MRI images of Outcome and Assessment Information (OASIS) dataset enables an exact characterization of certain brain diseases. There have been a number of division techniques for diagnosing AD that range in complexity. Compassion has been tested by deep learning techniques used to segment the structure of the brain and classify AD because they have the potential to uncover important information from vast amounts of data. In this paper the deep learning technique of Hybrid Dragonfly based GWO convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is achieved promising result for the diagnosis of AD. At image preprocessing wiener filter is used for removing the additive noises and the Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) extraction is implemented for texture analyzing. As a result, hybrid deep learning methods of CNN has the accuracy as 90% and the result of the image prediction are presented in this paper. © 2023 IEEE.

Ocean acoustic tomography (OAT) deploys most moored stations on the periphery of the tomographic region to sense the solenoidal current field. Moving vehicle tomography (MVT), an advancement of OAT, not only samples the region from various angles for improving the resolution of mapped currents but also acquires information about the ir-rotational flow due to the sampling points inside the region. To reconstruct a complete two-dimensional current field, the spatial modes derived from the open-boundary modal analysis (OMA) are preferable to the conventional truncated Fourier series since the OMA technique describes the solenoidal and irrotational flows efficiently in which all modes satisfy the coastline and open boundary conditions. Comparisons of the reconstructions are presented using three different representations of currents. The first two representations explain only the solenoidal flow: the truncated Fourier series and the OMA Dirichlet modes. The third representation, accounting for the solenoidal and irrotational flows, uses all the OMA modes. For reconstructing the solenoidal flow, the OMA representation with the Dirichlet modes performs better than the Fourier series. A large difference appears near the bay mouth, where the OMA-Dirichlet reconstruction shows a better fit to the uniform currents. However, considerable uncertainty exists outside the bay mouth where the irrotational currents dominate. This can be improved by the third representation with the inclusion of the Neumann and boundary modes. The reconstruction results using field data were validated against the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements. Additionally, incorporating constraints from ADCP measurements enhances the accuracy of the reconstruction. © 2023 American Meteorological Society.

The effectiveness of behavior change support systems (BCSS) in promoting health and well-being is unflinching. However, its long-term effectiveness is hindered by non-compliance. Research in BCSS that focuses on compliance is scarce, particularly the determinants of compliance intention are not well established. To address this gap, this study investigated the determinants of compliance intention in BCSS by extending the persuasive system design model to include competence, effectiveness, enjoyment, and persuasiveness. By surveying a sample of prospective BCSS users (N=234), partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the proposed model. The findings suggest that the prospective users’ perceptions of primary task support and dialogue support, as well as social support and credibility support significantly influenced their perceptions of self-competence and system effectiveness respectively. These perceptions influenced enjoyment, then persuasiveness, and finally compliance intention. A Physical-Based Artificial Neural Networks Compact Modeling Framework for Emerging FETs

We report a compact modeling framework based on the Grove-Frohman (GF) model and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for emerging gate-all-around (GAA) MOSFETs. The framework consists of two ANNs;the first ANN constructed with the drain current model not only can capture the main trend of device I - V characteristics but also can predict its variation even when the amount of training data for the ANN is insufficient or outside the range of applied biases. The second one is then designed to improve the model accuracy by further minimizing the errors between the target and the model outputs. We implement the proposed framework to accurately model emerging GAA nanosheet (NS) MOSFETs and complementary FETs (CFETs) without suffering from divergent issues in circuit simulation. In addition, nonphysical behaviors, such as nonzero current at zero bias, do not occur in the modeling framework. Compared to recently reported machine-learning (ML) models, our approach can achieve a similar level of model accuracy with merely 20% amount of the training data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
