Sharding is an effective technique to improve the scalability of blockchain. It splits nodes into multiple groups so that they can process transactions in parallel. To achieve higher parallelism and concurrency at large scales, it is desirable to maintain a large number of small shards. However, simply configuring small shards easily results in a higher fraction of malicious nodes inside shards, causing shard corruption and compromising system security. Existing sharding techniques hence demand large shards, at the expense of limited concurrency. To address this limitation, we propose CoChain: a blockchain sharding system that can securely configure small shards for enhanced concurrency. CoChain allows some shards to be corrupted. For security, each shard is monitored by multiple other shards. The latter reach a cross-shard Consensus on the Consensus results of their monitored shard. Once a corrupted shard is found, its subsequent consensus will be taken over by another shard, hence recovering the system. Via Consensus on Consensus, CoChain allows the existence of shards with more fraction of malicious nodes ( © 2023 IEEE.

The rapid but uneven education development worldwide is creating many challenges. Changing conditions and rules in engineering fields such as programming, automation, and electronics are not always followed by changes in education. Employers expect potential candidates to be current with the latest domain competencies and soft skills. The idea is to hire candidates with both knowledge (theoretical and practical) and experience in reflection and collaboration skills. Universities can not always keep up with the development of technology and the adaptation of curricula because change happens so quickly. Therefore, upgrades are needed in engineering education. Focusing education solely on measurable knowledge and results is a simple but often insufficient approach to presenting the entire curriculum within the time frame of a course. Our study of about 150 engineering students in Poland and Norway included the role of students' experiences in hands-on activities, especially labs. The research aimed to determine what students expect, what influences their results, and what complications may arise. The study results show that students often struggle with time management, prioritizing, and understanding practical tasks. In addition, there is a difference between students with and without practical work experience. Our research showed that both groups of students did not achieve all their intended educational goals for various reasons. Therefore, adapting the current teaching system to the student's needs and requirements is important. © 2023 IEEE.

Recently, federated learning (FL) has been threat-ened by the gradient inversion attack that infers user-private data from shared gradients. To cope with this problem, the differential privacy (DP) technique is widely employed in FL. However, when FL faces the non-independent identically distributed (non-IID) data scenarios, applying DP to protect user data privacy remains inefficient in terms of model accuracy and communication costs. In this paper, inspired by the Mixup data augmentation method, we propose a privacy-preserving FL approach called Fed2VAEs to address this problem. Specifically, we introduce a Mixup Module consisting of two variational autoencoders to remove the private information of user data. To balance the trade-off between data privacy and data utility, from the perspective of mutual information, a learning objective is proposed. We conduct extensive experiments under different non-IID data settings, and the experimental results show that Fed2VAEs can significantly reduce the communication cost and improve model accuracy (up to 8.57%) on the premise of successfully protecting user data privacy.

Hyperspectral imaging is gaining a significant role in agricultural remote sensing *** data unit is the hyperspectral cube which holds spatial information in two dimensions while spectral band information of each pixel in the third *** classification accuracy of hyperspectral images(HSI)increases significantly by employing both spatial and spectral *** this work,the data was acquired using an airborne hyperspectral imager system which collected HSI in the visible and near-infrared(VNIR)range of 400 to 1000 nm wavelength within 180 spectral *** dataset is collected for nine different crops on agricultural land with a spectral resolution of 3.3 nm wavelength for each *** data was cleaned from geometric distortions and stored with the class labels and annotations of global localization using the inertial navigation *** this study,a unique pixel-based approach was designed to improve the crops'classification accuracy by using the edge-preserving features(EPF)and principal component analysis(PCA)in *** preliminary processing generated the high-dimensional EPF stack by applying the edge-preserving filters on acquired *** the second step,this high dimensional stack was treated with the PCA for dimensionality reduction without losing significant spectral *** resultant feature space(PCA-EPF)demonstrated enhanced class separability for improved crop classification with reduced dimensionality and computational *** support vector machines classifier was employed for multiclass classification of target crops using *** classification performance evaluation was measured in terms of individual class accuracy,overall accuracy,average accuracy,and Cohen kappa *** proposed scheme achieved greater than 90%results for all the performance evaluation *** PCA-EPF proved to be an effective attribute for crop classification using hyperspectral imaging in the VNIR *** proposed scheme

LoRa technology contributes to green energy by enabling efficient,long-range communication for the Internet of Things(IoT).This paper addresses the challenges related to coverage range in outdoor monitoring systems utilizing LoRa,where the network performance is affected by the density of gateways(GWs)and end devices(EDs),as well as environmental *** mitigate interference,data throughput losses,and high-power consumption,the proposed spreading factor(SF)and hybrid(data rate|SF)models dynamically adjust the transmission *** orchestration of concurrent data modifications within the network server(NS)is crucial for uninterrupted communication between GWs and EDs,especially in monitoring electric vehicle(EV)stations to reduce traffic congestion and *** K-means and density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN)algorithms optimizes ED allocation,averts data congestion,and improves the signal-tointerference noise ratio(SINR).These methods ensure seamless information reception by meticulously allocated EDs across various GW *** estimate the free-space losses(FSL),a log-distance path loss model(log-PL)is *** various bandwidths(BWs),bidirectional communications,and duty cycles(DCs)helps to prevent saturation,thus prolonging the operational lifespan of *** findings reveal a notable packet rejection rate(PRR)of 0%for the DBSCAN(hybrid model).In contrast,the K-means exhibits a PRR ranging from 5%(hybrid model)to 35.29%(SF model)for the ten GWs ***,the network saturation is reduced to 10.185%and 9.503%,respectively,highlighting an improvement in the average efficiency of slotted ALOHA(91.1%)and pure ALOHA(90.7%).These enhancements increase the lifespan of EDs to 15,465.27 days.

Video frame interpolation has made great progress in estimating advanced optical flow and synthesizing in-between frames sequentially. However, frame interpolation involving various resolutions and motions remains challenging due to limited or fixed pre-trained networks. Inspired by the success of the coarse-to-fine scheme for video frame interpolation, i.e., gradually interpolating frames of different resolutions, we propose a progressive boosting network (ProBoost-Net) based on a multi-scale framework to achieve flexible recurrent scales and then gradually optimize optical flow estimation and frame interpolation. Specifically, we designed a dense motion boosting (DMB) module to transfer features close to real motion to the decoded features from the later scales, which provides complementary information to refine the motion further. Furthermore, to ensure the accuracy of the estimated motion features at each scale, we propose a motion adaptive fusion (MAF) module that adaptively deals with motions with different receptive fields according to the motion conditions. Thanks to the framework’s flexible recurrent scales, we can customize the number of scales and make trade-offs between computation and quality depending on the application scenario. Extensive experiments with various datasets demonstrated the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art approaches in various scenarios. © 2023 Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. The millimeter wave (mmWave) radar sensing-aided communications in vehicular mobile communication systems is investigated. To alleviate the beam training overhead under high mobility scenarios, a successive pose estimation and beam tracking (SPEBT) scheme is proposed to facilitate mmWave communications with the assistance of mmWave radar sensing. The proposed SPEBT scheme first resorts to a Fast Conservative Filtering for Efficient and Accurate Radar odometry (Fast-CFEAR) approach to estimate the vehicle pose consisting of 2-dimensional position and yaw from radar point clouds collected by mmWave radar sensor. Then, the pose estimation information is fed into an extend Kalman filter to perform beam tracking for the line-of-sight channel. Owing to the intrinsic robustness of mmWave radar sensing, the proposed SPEBT scheme is capable of operating reliably under extreme weather/illumination conditions and large-scale global navigation satellite systems (GNSS)-denied environments. The practical deployment of the SPEBT scheme is verified through rigorous testing on a real-world sensing dataset. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SPEBT scheme is capable of providing precise pose estimation information and accurate beam tracking output, while reducing the proportion of beam training overhead to less than 5% averagely. © 2023 IEEE.
