We present new algorithms for refining the estimates of the eigenvectors of a real symmetric matrix. Using techniques from calculus, we show that the algorithms converge locally cubically fast. By this we mean that locally all eigenvalue-eigenvector pairs simultaneously converge at a cubic rate. This is in contrast to well known shifted QR algorithms, which depending on the shifting strategy employed, have only one (or at most a small subset) of the eigenvalue-eigenvector pairs converging cubically at any one time. The algorithms are well suited to the situation where one needs to compute the eigenvectors of a perturbed matrix A + E based on a good estimate of the eigenvectors of a matrix A. Such a situation frequently appears in tracking applications. © 2005 IEEE.

The Continuation of Invariant Subspaces (CIS) algorithm produces a smoothly varying basis for an invariant subspace R(s) of a parameter-dependent matrix A(s). In the case when A(s) is the Jacobian matrix for a system that comes from a spatial discretization of a partial differential equation, it will typically be large and sparse. Cl matcont is a user-friendly matlab package for the study of dynamical systems and their bifurcations. We incorporate the CIS algorithm into cl matcont to extend its functionality to large scale bifurcation computations via subspace reduction. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Metal-based negative refractive-index materials have been extensively studied in the microwave region. However, negative-index metamaterials have not been realized at near-IR or visible frequencies due to difficulties of fabrication and to the generally poor optical properties of metals at these wavelengths. In this Letter, we report the first fabrication and experimental verification of a transversely structured metal-dielectric-metal multilayer exhibiting a negative refractive index around 2 μm. Both the amplitude and the phase of the transmission and reflection were measured experimentally, and are in good agreement with a rigorous coupled wave analysis.

We cast the notion of bisimulation in the Willems' behavioral setting. We show that in this setting, bisimulation is also a congruence, as it is known in the field of concurrent processes. Bisimulation is a congruence means if A and A′ are bisimilar systems, then A ∥ B and A′ ∥ B are also bisimilar. Here, the operator ∥ denotes systems composition, and B is any other system that is composed with A or A′.

This report discusses problems and methodologies that lie in the broad scope of systems and signals, with special focus on modeling, identification and signal processing;adaptation and learning;discrete event and hybrid systems;and stochastic systems. A common theme underlying all these areas is that problems in control systems and signals are usually defined and best studied in the framework of stochastic approaches. Although there are common precepts among all these technologies, there are also many unique topics within each area. Therefore, the current key problems in each technology are explained, followed by a discussion of recent major accomplishments with trends, and finally some forecasts of likely developments are provided. The conclusion summarizes some general forecasts for the overall field of systems and signals. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

With the rapid development of high-power white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), advances in packaging are required to further improve the device performance. In this work, an optimized packaging configuration for high power LED lamps with enhanced phosphorescence efficiency is presented based on ray-tracing simulations and experimental results. Figure 1 shows two phosphor arrangements, namely a "proximate phosphor" and a "remote phosphor" arrangement. The surface of the reflector cup is assumed to be either specular or diffuse. Three different encapsulant geometries, i.e., a "flat" (no cap), "convex" (spherical cap with height h = r/2), and "hemispherical" (h = r) top surface, are used in the simulations. Figure 2 shows phosphorescence efficiency with different packaging configurations obtained by ray-tracing simulation. The packaging configuration with remote phosphor, diffuse reflector cup and hemispherical encapsulation shows a 50% enhancement of phosphorescence efficiency compared to conventional packaging configuration. This improvement is attributed to reduced absorption of the phosphorescence by the LED chip and the reduction of deterministic optical modes trapped inside the encapsulant of remote-phosphor and diffuse reflector cup configuration. The angular dependence of the reflectivity for a diffuse Ag reflector and a specular Ag reflector is measured and shown in Figure 3. The roughened Ag reflector has a more than two orders of magnitude higher diffusely reflected power compared with the specular Ag reflector, which leads to the extraction of the trapped optical modes occurring in packaging structures with specular reflector cups. Dichromatic LED lamps comprising an ultraviolet GaN LED (λ = 400 nm) with a blue phosphor and a blue GaInN LED (λ = 470 nm) with a yellow phosphor are fabricated with different phosphor arrangements and reflector cups. Digital signature schemes are crucial for applications in electronic commerce. The effectiveness and security of a digital signature scheme rely on its underlying public key cryptosystem. Trapdoor functions are central to public key cryptosystems. However, the modular exponentiation for RSA or the discrete logarithms for ElGamal/DSA/ECC, as the choice of the trapdoor functions, are relatively slow in performance. Some multivariate schemes has potentially much higher performance than other public key cryptosystems. We present a new multivariate digital signature scheme (TRMS) based on tractable rational maps. We also give some security analysis and some actual implementation data in comparison to some other signature schemes. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2005.

We discuss a new method of time series data mining using moving approximation (MAP) transform and association measures based on MAP. MAP transform replaces time series values by slope values of lines approximating time series data in sliding window. An effective method of MAP transform calculation for time series with fixed time step is proposed. Based on MAP, a measure of local trend associations between time series is introduced. This measure is invariant under independent linear transformations of time series. Measure of local trend associations defines association function depending on the size of sliding window for each pare of considered time series. Based on association function, different association measures may be considered to measure local trend associations or global trend associations between time series. The methods of application of association measure to construction of association network of time series are discussed and illustrated on examples of synthetic and financial time series databases. Association networks give information about relationships between time dynamics of elements of systems given by time series databases.

Most multivariate schemes have potentially much higher performance than other public key cryptosystems [15] [4] [1] [2]. Wolf and Preneel [16] show multivariate quadratic public key schemes have many equivalent keys and provide some transformations to identify the keys. In this paper, we propose the idea of similar keys of MQ-based public key cryptosystems(PKCs) and provide a method to reduce the size of private key in MQ-based PKCs to 50% - 70% of its original size. And our method is generic for most MQ-based PKCs except for UOV-like and STS-like schemes. Moreover, our method remains the equivalent security and efficiency with original MQ-based PKCs. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
