It is generally believed that the queueing behavior of an arrival process is most sensitive to its first and second order statistics. In this paper, we show that this is not generally true. We consider the queueing behavior of two classes of sources. The first class is the superposition of multiple discrete autoregressive sources of order 1 (referred to as DAR(1) sources), and the second class is a single DAR(1) source having the same first and second order statistics as the superposed source. In particular, we show that in the homogeneous case, the mean queue lengths of the two models are identical, but the queue length variances of the two models are significantly different depending on the correlation of individual sources.

The tool allows an instructor to dynamically capture the problem solving process in action with a voice annotated representation. Using one click the process can be replayed, and with a second click published to the Web as a Flash™ movie. The tool can also be used for assessment and research. It is stated that if students solve a selected task using the Belshazzar system, a teacher or researcher would have a rich media file that captures the essence of a student's problem solving capabilities.

In this paper, an algebraic decoding method is proposed for the quadratic residue codes that utilize the Berlekamp-Massey (BM) algorithm. By applying a technique developed in [1], one can express unknown syndromes as functions of known syndromes. The unknown syndromes are determined by an efficient algorithm also developed in this paper. With the appearance of unknown syndromes, one obtains the consecutive syndromes that are needed for the application of the inverse-free BM algorithm [2-5]. The new decoding scheme developed here can be used to implement the (79, 40, 15) quadratic residue (QR) code which has not been treated so far. It is verified by a computer program that uses the C++ language.

Sufficient conditions of global stabilization for a class of multi-input and multi-output continuous-time and/or discrete-time nonlinear systems are presented. The systems discussed in this work are not necessarily affine in input, and but they may possess Lyapunov stable control-free dynamics. The stabilizing controllers introduced in the paper are dynamic output feedbacks based on reduced-order state observer. The asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is checked using LaSalle's invariance principle. By means of Lyapunov approach a separation principle is established for the design of feedback control law and observer in the stabilizing dynamic output controller, respectively.

A method of the vectorial representation for splitting the calculation of the nonseparable three-dimensional discrete Hartley transform (3-D DHT) into a set of one-dimensional (1-D) DHTs is presented. The method is based on the vectorial, or tensor form of representation of a 3-D image and can be applied to any orders of the transform. The case of the N × N × N-point DHT, for N = 2r (r > 1), is considered in detail. The number of multiplications required for calculating the 3-D DHT by the method of vectorial representation equals 7[8r-1 (r - 3) + 4r-1] that is the best estimate of all existent algorithms. The improvement of this method, the recurrent algorithm, that reduces about 1.6 times the number of multiplications is also described.
