The paper presents a qualitative analysis of an array of diffusively coupled identical continuous time dynamical systems. The effects of full, partial, antiphase, and in-phase–antiphase chaotic synchronizations are investigated via the linear invariant manifolds of the corresponding differential equations. The existence of various invariant manifolds, a self-similar behavior, and a hierarchy and embedding of the manifolds of the coupled system are discovered. Sufficient conditions for the stability of the invariant manifolds are obtained via the method of Lyapunov functions. Conditions under which full global synchronization cannot be achieved even for the largest coupling constant are defined. The general rigorous results are illustrated through examples of coupled Lorenz-like and Rössler systems.

This report presents preliminary results from our project on creating distributed expertise for teaching computer organization & architecture course(s) in the undergraduate computer science curriculum. We present the details of an online survey designed to gather information from faculty on the current state of teaching this course. The survey also tries to identify specific areas of need for creating distributed expertise as reported by various faculty. We also present several resources that have been identified that are available for use by faculty teaching the course(s). This report represents a mid-point of an ongoing two-year study. Following a discussion of the currently identified needs, we discuss ways to address them and conclude the report with a plan of action that will follow in the next phase of the project.

Some design considerations related to wall losses and mode competition in an ITER relevant coaxial cavity gyrotron are presented. New possibilities of heat redistribution and of reduction of mode competition by means of an insert with variable depth of corrugations along the longitudinal direction of the cavity are discussed.

Energy shaping is the essence of passivity based control (PBC), a controller design technique that is very well-known in mechanical systems. Our objectives in the article are threefold. First, to call attention to the fact that PBC does not rely on some particular structural properties of mechanical systems, but hinges on the more fundamental (and universal) property of energy balancing. Second, to identify the physical obstacles that hamper the use of "standard" PBC in applications other than mechanical systems. In particular, we show that "standard"" PBC is stymied by the presence of unbounded energy dissipation, hence it is applicable only to systems that are stabilizable with passive controllers. Third, to revisit a PBC theory that has been developed to overcome the dissipation obstacle, as well as to make the incorporation of process prior knowledge more systematic. These two important features allow us to design energy based controllers for a wide range of physical systems.

Signal and image enhancement in the presence of noise is considered in the context of the scale-space approach. A modified dynamic process, based on the action of a nonlinear diffusion equation, is presented. The diffusion coefficient is adjusted according to the local gradient, intensity and other image properties, and as such also reverses its sign, i.e. switches from a forward to a backward (inverse) diffusion process according to a given criterion. This results in enhancement of transients and singularities in the one-dimensional case, and of edges in images, while locally denoising smoother segments of the signal or image. Regularization of the ill-posed inverse diffusion problem is discussed. Examples of both one-dimensional signals and images are presented.

We study the problem of existence of positive, spherically symmetric strong solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations involving p-Laplacian in the ball. We allow simultaneous strong dependence of the right-hand side on both the unknown function and its gradient. The elliptic problem is studied by relating it to the corresponding singular ordinary integro-differential equation. Solvability range is obtained in the form of simple inequalities involving the coefficients describing the problem.
We also study a posteriori regularity of solutions. An existence result is formulated for elliptic equations on arbitrary bounded domains in dependence of outer radius of domain.

Standard fractal image coding methods seek to find a contractive fractal transform operator T that best scales and copies subsets of a target image I (its domain blocks) onto smaller subsets (its range blocks). The fi...
