We introduce a new algorithm for complex image reconstruction with separate regularization of the image magnitude and phase. This optimization problem is interesting in many different image reconstruction contexts, although is nonconvex and can be difficult to solve. In this work, we first describe a novel implementation of the previous proximal alternating linearized minization (PALM) algorithm to solve this optimization problem. We then make enhancements to PALM, leading to a new algorithm named PALMNUT that combines the PALM together with Nesterov’s momentum and a novel approach that relies on uncoupled coordinatewise step sizes derived from coordinatewise Lipschitz-like bounds. Theoretically, we establish that a version of PALMNUT (without Nesterov’s momentum) monotonically decreases the objective function, leading to guaranteed convergence in many cases of interest. Empirical results obtained in the context of magnetic resonance imaging demonstrate that PALMNUT has computational advantages over common existing approaches like alternating minimization. Although our focus is on the application to separate magnitude and phase regularization, we expect that the same approach may also be useful in other nonconvex optimization problems with similar objective function structure. © 2020, CC BY-NC-SA.

Breast cancer is one of the factors that cause the increase of mortality of women. The most widely used method for diagnosing this geological disease i.e. breast cancer is the ultrasound scan. Several key features such as the smoothness and the texture of the tumor captured through ultrasound scans encode the abnormality of the breast tumors (malignant from benign). However, ultrasound scans are often noisy and include irrelevant parts of the breast that may bias the segmentation of eventual tumors. In this paper, we are going to extract the region of interest (i.e, bounding boxes of the tumors) and feed-forward them to one semantic segmentation encoder-decoder structure based on its classification (i.e, malignant or benign). the whole process aims to build an instance-based segmenter from a semantic segmenter and an object detector. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, outage performance of hybrid satellite-terrestrial relaying networks using rateless codes (RCs) is evaluated via both simulation and analysis. In the proposed scheme, a satellite (S) transmits encoded packets to a group of terrestrial users (U) with help of a terrestrial station (R). The terrestrial users are suffered from co-channel interference, and they must receive a sufficient number of the encoded packets for the data recovery. This paper analyzes outage probability (OP) at each user and system outage probability (SOP) defined as probability that one of the users cannot collect enough encoded packets after the transmission ends. This paper also investigates impact of number of the users, number of the interference sources, and number of the data transmission of the satellite on the OP and SOP performance.

Massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) enables ultra-high throughput and low latency for tile-based adaptive virtual reality (VR) 360◦ video transmission in wireless network. In this paper, we consider a massive MIMO system where multiple users in a single-cell theater watch an identical VR 360◦ video. Based on tile prediction, base station (BS) deliveries the tiles in predicted field of view (FoV) to users. By introducing practical supplementary transmission for missing tiles and unacceptable VR sickness, we propose the first stable transmission scheme for VR video. we formulate an integer non-linear programming (INLP) problem to maximize users' average quality of experience (QoE) score. Moreover, we derive the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression of predictive tile groups and the approximately achievable SE expression of missing tile groups, respectively. Analytically, the overall throughput is related to the number of tile groups and the length of pilot sequences. By exploiting the relationship between the structure of viewport tiles and SE expression, we propose a multi-lattice multi-stream grouping method aimed at improving the overall throughput for VR video transmission. Moreover, we analyze the relationship between QoE objective and number of predictive tile. We transform the original INLP problem into an integer linear programming problem by setting the predictive tiles groups as some constants. With variable relaxation and recovery, we obtain the optimal average QoE. Extensive simulation results validate that the proposed algorithm effectively improves QoE. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Traditional recurrent neural networks are composed of capacitors, inductors, resistors, and operational *** neural networks are constructed by replacing resistors with memristors. This paper focuses on the memory analysis,i.e. the initial value computation, of memristors. Firstly, we present the memory analysis for a single memristor based on memristors’ mathematical models with linear and nonlinear ***, we present the memory analysis for two memristors in series and parallel. Thirdly, we point out the difference between traditional neural networks and those that are memristive. Based on the current and voltage relationship of memristors, we use mathematical analysis and SPICE simulations to demonstrate the validity of our methods.

This paper generalizes regularized regression problems in a hyper-reproducing kernel Hilbert space (hyper-RKHS), illustrates its utility for kernel learning and out-of-sample extensions, and proves asymptotic convergence results for the introduced regression models in an approximation theory view. Algorithmically, we consider two regularized regression models with bivariate forms in this space, including kernel ridge regression (KRR) and support vector regression (SVR) endowed with hyper-RKHS, and further combine divide-and-conquer with Nyström approximation for scalability in large sample cases. This framework is general: the underlying kernel is learned from a broad class, and can be positive definite or not, which adapts to various requirements in kernel learning. Theoretically, we study the convergence behavior of regularized regression algorithms in hyper-RKHS and derive the learning rates, which goes beyond the classical analysis on RKHS due to the non-trivial independence of pairwise samples and the characterisation of hyper-RKHS. Experimentally, results on several benchmarks suggest that the employed framework is able to learn a general kernel function form an arbitrary similarity matrix, and thus achieves a satisfactory performance on classification tasks.

This paper presents a discussion and results of clipped digital modulated waveform signal that is affected by Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Impulse Noise (IN). It is shown that clipping the digital modulated waveform affected by AWGN results in the tails of the distribution being approximated by Gaussian distribution tails. Antipodal and non-coherent FSK modulation schemes are used to demonstrate the effect of clipping a digital modulated waveform signal, and in both schemes, the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance is signficantly improved by clipping, when both AWGN and IN are present. © 2020 IEEE.

Building upon the statistical formulation for parameter estimation in the presence of correlated noise proposed by Cireddu et al., we present the initial study to incorporate the effects of correlated noise into the analyses of various detector designs’ performance. We consider a two-L-shaped-detector configuration located in Europe and compare the expectation of parameter estimation of gravitational wave transients between noncollocated and hypothetical collocated configurations. In our study, we posit the existence of low-frequency correlated noise within the 5–10 Hz range for the collocated detector configuration, with a varying degree of correlation. In this specific detector setup, our observations indicate an enhancement in the precision of intrinsic parameter measurements as the degree of correlation increases. This trend suggests that higher degrees of noise correlation may beneficially influence the accuracy of parameter estimation. In particular, when the noise is highly correlated, the uncertainty on chirp mass decreases by up to 30%. The absence of an inter-European baseline does hinder the estimation of the extrinsic parameters. However, given a realistic global network with the additional detector located in the United States, the uncertainty of extrinsic parameters is significantly reduced. This reduction is further amplified as the degree of noise correlation increases. When the degree of noise correlation exceeds a certain level, the collocated configuration outperforms the noncollocated configuration. For instance, when the degree of correlation is high, the collocated configuration decreases the 90% credible area of sky location by up to 10% compared to the noncollocated configuration. We conclude that the impact of noise correlation is not trivial and can potentially alter both the quantitative and qualitative outcomes in detector performance. Haptic Rendering of Thin, Deformable Objects with Spatially Varying Stiffness

In the real world, we often come across soft objects having spatially varying stiffness, such as human palm or a wart on the skin. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to render thin, deformable objects having spatially varying stiffness (inhomogeneous material). We use the classical Kirchhoff thin plate theory to compute the deformation. In general, the physics-based rendering of an arbitrary 3D surface is complex and time-consuming. Therefore, we approximate the 3D surface locally by a 2D plane using an area-preserving mapping technique - Gall-Peters mapping. Once the deformation is computed by solving a fourth-order partial differential equation, we project the points back onto the original object for proper haptic rendering. Resource allocation using deep learning in mobile small cell networks

The deployment of mobile-Small cells (mScs) is widely adopted to intensify the quality-of-service (QoS) in high mobility vehicles. However, the rapidly varying interference patterns among densely deployed mScs make the resource allocation (RA) highly challenging. In such scenarios, RA problem needs to be solved nearly in real-time, which can be considered as drawback for most existing RA algorithms. To overcome this constraint and solve the RA problem efficiently, we use deep learning (DL) in this work due to its ability to leverage the historical data in RA problem and to deal with computationally expensive tasks offline. More specifically, this paper considers the RA problem in vehicular environment comprising of city buses, where DL is explored for optimization of network performance. Simulation results reveal that RA in a network using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm outperforms other machine learning (ML) and DL-based RA mechanisms. Moreover, RA using LSTM provides less accurate results as compared to existing Time Interval Dependent Interference Graph (TIDIG)-based, and Threshold Percentage Dependent Interference Graph (TPDIG)based RA but shows improved results when compared to RA using Global Positioning System Dependent Interference Graph (GPSDIG).
