Summary form only given. We propose architecture and a general optimization framework for dynamic, distributed real-time systems. Interesting features of this model include the consideration of adaptive applications and utility functions. We extend by formalizing the corresponding multicriterial optimization problem. As the most difficult part of this problem, we identified the evaluation and comparison of the quality of single allocations and sets of allocations, respectively. To this end, we propose and examine metrics for measuring the goodness of solutions within our general resource management framework. These metrics lay the basis for further work on developing both online and offline algorithms to tackle the general optimization problem and provide an efficient adaptive resource manager for dynamic, distributed real-time systems.

A model of multi-part asset with dependent maintenance cost is presented. The problem is to minimize the long-run average cost per time unit. To share some costs, a good policy may jointly replace multiple parts when an asset is maintained. However, it is difficult to obtain an optimal joint replacement policy in view of combinatorial explosion of the states and stochastic system dynamics. To obtain optimal policies for small problems, a novel method is built by recent developed time aggregation Markov decision approach, which leads to analytical and computational simplifications as compared with traditional Markov decision approaches. One-stage and two-stage analysis methods are developed for large problems. The upper bound of one-stage analysis method for single part problems is obtained to show the insight that it can achieve near or true optimal policy. For multi-part problems, they are proved to satisfy certain necessary optimality conditions. These conditions can significantly simplify their implementation. Numerical results show that they are more efficient and effective than other near optimal methods.

This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

A novel approach is presented for determining confidence values for bases called in DNA sequencing. The approach employs fuzzy logic, which forwards flexibility, adaptability and intuition through the use of linguistic variables and fuzzy membership. The proposed fuzzy logic-based method determines the confidence values based on the height, the peakness, and the spacing of the first most likely candidate (the base called) and the peakness and height for the second likely candidate. The technique has been tested on over 3000 ABI 3700 DNA files and the result has shown improved performance over the existing Phred's and ABTs quality value.

Research projects about evolution of agents in a cellular world are not new topics in the artificial life (AL) fields. However, most of the studies focus on those fundamental, social behaviours like energy preservation, pattern formation or leader following etc. This paper presents experiments about applications of genetic algorithms (GAs) to an empirical multiple robot cooperative task: unknown environment exploration. These experiments investigate the effectiveness of GAs for evolving behaviours of individual swarm members that constitute good collective results. They try to answer the questions of (i) Can GAs find such behaviours, or, do such behaviours exist? (ii) Are these behaviours sensitive to environmental changes?. © 2003 IEEE.

A smart sensor node has been developed which has (a) the ability to sense strain of the structure under observation (b) process this raw sensor data in cooperation with its neighbors and (c) transmit the information to the end user. These sensor nodes are interconnected by a loosely coupled network called sensor network. The network is designed to be self organizing in the sense of establishing and maintaining the inter node connectivity without the need for human intervention. For the envisioned application of structural health monitoring, wireless communication is the most practical solution not only because they eliminate interconnecting wires but also for their ability to establish communication links even in inaccessible regions. But wireless network brings with it a number of issues such as interference, fault tolerant self organizing, multi-hop communication, energy efficiency, routing and finally reliable operation in spite of massive complexity of the system. This paper addresses the issue of fault tolerant self organizing in wireless sensor networks. We propose a new architecture called the Redundant Link Network (RLN). Adaptive resource management (ARM) technology has emerged as a way to: (1) support applications' varying resource needs, and (2) provide reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems. Most existent works on ARM have focused on centralized approaches. However, centralized ARMs are not scalable, which may result in slow responses and wrong allocation decisions based on inaccurate system state information. In this paper, we show how to address these problems with a decentralized resource management approach. Based on social models, the approach appears to have the potential to provide prompt and accurate allocation of resources. © 2003 IEEE.

The economic constraints on modern day military and commercial air fleets has imposed longer lifecycles and extended environmental exposure on them. Aging aircrafts are more susceptible to damage due to fatigue and environmental corrosion. Adhesively bonded composite patch repairs have been found to be an economic and reliable means of strengthening aging airframes. However, before this technology is adopted by the aircraft industry the long term durability of the composite patch repairs in terms of their structural integrity has to be thoroughly scrutinized. In this paper a structural health monitoring algorithm has been developed that can detect damage in adhesively bonded composite patch repairs using the dynamic response of a structure. The signal-based health monitoring algorithm, wavelet analysis, has been utilized to detect damage using small local variations in the vibration signature of the structure. Specifically, curvature mode shapes, and wavelet maps, are integrated to detect damage at both single and multiple locations. The dynamical characteristics of the test structure are obtained analytically using linear elastic finite element analysis and experimentally with a Laser Doppler Vibrometer.
