Domain adaptation, which aims to learn domain-invariant features for sentiment classification, has received increasing attention. The underlying rationality of domain adaptation is that the involved domains share some common latent factors. Recently neural network based on Stacked Denoising Auto-Encoders (SDA) and its marginalized version (mSDA) have shown promising results on learning domain-invariant features. To explicitly preserve the intrinsic structure of data, this paper proposes a marginalized Denoising Autoencoders via graph Regularization (GmSDA) in which the autoencoder based framework can learn more robust features with the help of newly incorporated graph regularization. The learned representations are fed into the sentiment classifiers and experiments show that the GmSDA can effectively improve the classification accuracy when comparing with some state-of-the-art models on the cropped Amazon benchmark data set. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Constructing an informative and discriminative graph plays an important role in the graph based semi-supervised learning methods. Among these graph construction methods, low-rank representation based graph, which calculates the edge weights of both labeled and unlabeled samples as the low-rank representation (LRR) coefficients, has shown excellent performance in semi-supervised learning. In this paper, we additionally impose twofold constraints (local affinity and distant repulsion) on the LRR graph. The improved model, termed structure preserving LRR (SPLRR), can preserve the local geometrical structure but without distorting the distant repulsion property. Experiments are taken on three widely used face data sets to investigate the performance of SPLRR and the results show that it is superior to some state-of-the-art semi-supervised graphs. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

In many cases an adaptive control must be implemented in discrete-time rather than continuous-time, aerospace applications. In the case of infinite-dimensional systems, the adaptive control theoretic problem becomes substantially different;we will emphasize those anomalies here. Given a linear discrete-time infinite dimensional plant on a Hilbert space and disturbances of known waveform but unknown amplitude and phase, we show that there exists a stabilizing discerete-time direct model reference adaptive control law with certain disturbance rejection and robustness properties. Our central result is a discrete-time version of Barbalat-Lyapunov result for infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is used to determine conditions under which a linear infinite-dimensional system can be directly adaptively regulated. Our results are illustrated on a system described by a compact self-adjoint operator;such a description fits many discrete-time applications.

The most standard image object detectors are usually comprised of one or multiple feature extractors or classifiers within a sliding window framework. Nevertheless, this type of approach has demonstrated a very limited performance under datasets of cluttered scenes and real life situations. To tackle these issues, LIDAR space is exploited here in order to detect 2D objects in 3D space, avoiding all the inherent problems of regular sliding window techniques. Additionally, we propose a relational parts-based pedestrian detection in a probabilistic non-iid framework. With the proposed framework, we have achieved state-of-the-art performance in a pedestrian dataset gathered in a challenging urban scenario. The proposed system demonstrated superior performance in comparison with pure sliding-window-based image detectors.

We suggest a multi-process dynamic model and a sequential bayesian forecasting method of tumor-specific growth. The mixture model uses prior information obtained from the general population and becomes more individualized as more observations from the tumor are sequentially taken into account. In this study we propose utilizing all available tumor-specific information up to date to approximate the unknown multi-scale process of tumor growth over time, in a stochastic context. The validation of our approach was performed with experimental data from mice and the results show that after few observations from a tumor are obtained and included in the model, the latter becomes more individualized, in the sense that its parameters are adjusted in order to reect the growth of each individual tumor, yielding more precise estimates of its size.

This paper presents a distributed methodology for detecting and isolating multiple sensor faults in interconnected nonlinear systems. For each of the interconnected subsystems, a corresponding Local Sensor Fault Diagnosis (LSFD) agent is designed, which is allowed to exchange information with neighboring LSFD agents. The decisions of the LSFD agents are integrated and processed by a Global Sensor Fault Diagnosis (GSFD) agent in order to isolate multiple sensor faults propagating between neighboring LSFD agents through information exchange. The combined local and global isolation decision logic is designed based on diagnostic reasoning, taking into account the effects of sensor faults in the local sensor set and the transmitted faulty sensor information on the agents' decisions.

Modern grid codes for interconnection of distributed energy resources have become more restrictive due to the massive integration of renewable energy sources. The interconnected renewable energy sources must operate accurately under normal and abnormal grid conditions in order to meet the grid requirements. In addition, the renewable energy systems require fault ride through capability in order to support the power grid under balanced or unbalanced low voltage grid faults. Therefore, the development of advanced current controller techniques is essential for the grid side power electronic converters in order to increase the renewable energy systems penetration and satisfy the grid codes. This paper proposes a current controller technique, which enables the appropriate operation of the grid side converter under unbalanced grid faults and harmonic distorted grid conditions. The proposed current controller is designed using multiple synchronous reference frames and can inject full positive or full negative sequence balanced sinusoidal currents under abnormal grid conditions. The accurate performance with robustness against unbalanced and harmonic distorted grid voltage indicates that the proposed current controller can be a useful tool in the fault ride through control of renewable energy systems.

Renewable energy sources require accurate and appropriate performance not only under normal grid operation but also under abnormal and faulty grid conditions according to the modern grid codes. This paper proposes a novel phase-locked loop algorithm (MSHDC-PLL), which can enable the fast and dynamic synchronization of the interconnected renewable energy system under unbalanced grid faults and under highly harmonic distorted voltage. The outstanding performance of the suggested PLL is achieved by implementing an innovative multi-sequence/harmonic decoupling cell in order to dynamically cancel out the oscillation of the positive sequence voltage vector, produced by the existence of unbalanced and harmonic distorted voltage. The fast and accurate response of the proposed PLL under abnormal grid conditions is very important for the appropriate synchronization and control of the interconnected renewable energy systems. Therefore, the performance of the new PLL can increase the quality of the injected power under abnormal conditions and in addition enable the renewable energy systems to provide the appropriate support to the grid under balanced and unbalanced grid faults.

The measurement chain of the power system consists of various components introducing their associated uncertainty to the measured quantity. Although, it is important to identify and quantify the individual uncertainties of the measurement chain components and consequently the combined measurement chain uncertainty, it is nearly impossible to do this for all the components. In this paper a simplified measurement chain is considered that consists of the instrument transformer and the measurement device. The importance of considering the accuracy class of the instrument transformer is underlined by examining the effect of the instrument transformer accuracy class on the performance of a conventional and a hybrid state estimator performance. The two state estimators are used in the IEEE 118 bus system.

Network reduction techniques are attractive options for the analysis of large, complex power systems. In the process of network reduction, the original measurements usually get transformed along with the network parameters. It is therefore essential to take into account these transformations in applications such as state estimation. This paper presents a methodology for determining the relation between the measurements in the reduced system and the measurements in the original system. State estimation can then be carried out with the help of the transformed measurements. The developed method is applied on the IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 118 bus test systems.
