This paper investigates the use of wireless sensor networks for estimating the location of an event that emits a signal that propagates over a large region. The contribution of the paper is that it deals with events with non-circular footprint. In the overwhelming majority of the papers that deal with event detection and localization, it is assumed that the source has a circular footprint in the sense that the event generates a signal that propagates uniformly in all directions thus it can be detected by any sensor that is located in a circular disc around the source. In this paper, we consider a covariance detection algorithm and a non-uniform propagation model where the event footprint is not the usual circular disc. Another contribution of this paper is that it uses measurement correlation information for localizing the event. Finally, we present some preliminary results for localizing a plume source. ©2010 IEEE.

In the recent years there has been an increased interest in the analysis and design of distributed control systems. This is motivated by the distributed nature of many systems, found in diverse areas such as manufacturing, transportation, power systems, mobile robotics, etc. Moreover, a key objective in engineering is the design of reliable systems that are able to operate within certain performance margins even in the presence of slowly developing faults. A distributed fault diagnosis and accommodation scheme needs to be able to provide reliable and safe operation of the distributed system, with limited information exchange between the individual subsystems. Towards this direction, this paper presents a distributed fault detection and accommodation design for a class of nonlinear interconnected subsystems. A fault may occur in the subsystems local dynamics as well as in the interconnections between the subsystems. The subsystems are allowed to exchange state information, according to a tracking error-based communication protocol. The distributed fault detection and accommodation architecture is based on the use of adaptive approximation models which utilize local, as well as, remote communicated state information. ©2010 IEEE.

Nowadays, wireless sensor networks are widely used in a variety of applications such as in military, vehicle tracking, disaster management and environmental monitoring. Accurate estimation of the sensor position can be crucial in many of these applications. In this research, we propose a localization algorithm based on probabilistic fuzzy logic systems (PFLS) for range-free localization. The algorithm utilizes received signal strength (RSS) from the anchor nodes embedded with variant degrees of environmental noise. The proposed system is compared with another algorithm based on Fuzzy Logic systems (FLS) against variant amount of noise. Simulation results demonstrate that FLS can be much more accurate than PFLS method if the environment is noise-free. However, as the environmental noise increases, the PFLS reaches better performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Offline analysis pipelines have been developed and evaluated for the detection of covert attention from electroen-cephalography recordings, and the detection of overt attention in terms of eye movement based on electrooculographic measurements. Some additional analysis were done in order to prepare the pipelines for use in a real-time system. This real-time system and a game application in which these pipelines are to be used were implemented. The game is set in a virtual environment where player is a wildlife photographer on an uninhabited island. Overt attention is used to adjust the angle of the first person camera, when the player is tracking animals. When making a photograph, the animal will flee when it notices it is looked at directly, so covert attention is required to get a good shot. Future work will entail user tests with this system to evaluate usability, user experience, and characteristics of the signals related to overt and covert attention when used in such an immersive environment.

The World Wide Web has created a new media for mass marketing that can also be highly customized to online customers' needs and expectations. Recommender systems (RS) play an important role in this area. Here, we aim to establish a genre-based collaborative RS to automatically suggest and rank a list of appropriate items (movies) to a user based on the user profile and the past voting patterns of other users with similar tastes. The contribution of this paper is using genre based information in a hybrid fuzzy-Bayesian network collaborative RS. The interest to the different genres is computed based on a hybrid user model. The similarity of likeminded users according to the fuzzy distance and also Pearson correlation coefficient is involved in a Bayesian network. © 2010 IEEE.

The concept of harvesting various forms of waste energy to power small electronic components has received growing attention over the last decade. Solar energy, heat energy due to thermal gradients and ambient vibrations constitute some of the major sources of energy that can be harvested. Researchers have presented several papers focusing on each of these topics separately. This paper aims to develop an energy harvester using these three sources of energy to improve multifunctionality in structural applications. The concept of self-charging structures (flexible piezoceramics with thin-film batteries) introduced by the authors for vibration-based energy harvesting is extended to the case of multiple energy sources. A multilayer structure with flexible solar, piezoceramic, thin-film battery and metallic substructure layers is developed (with the dimensions of 4" x 1" x 0.06"). Thermoelectric energy is also used for charging the thin-film battery layers (using a 1.2" x 1.3" x 0.16" generator). The multifunctional energy harvesting concept developed herein can find applications for structures exposed to sunlight along with dynamic loading and thermal gradients. © (2010) by the International Conference on Adaptive Structures and Technologies (ICAST).

Although search engines are quite useful for obtaining information from the World Wide Web, users still have problems obtaining the most relevant information when processing their web queries. Different methods exist for query expansion with various levels of success. A major point in query expansion techniques is to consider the relations existing between the query terms as a means for retrieving more relevant web pages. Therefore, the more comprehensible these relations are observed, the more relevance can be expected for the retrieved web pages. Taking this point into account, in this paper, a framework is represented for query expansion based on viewpoint- oriented manipulation of the related query terms. Comparison between the relevant retrieved documents, on proposed queries with Google results, illustrate how more relevant results are obtained in the situations where the very viewpoints type relations existing between the query terms are clearly detectable and in the meantime no semantic relation may at the first look exists between the query terms. In this paper, we have made use of two approaches to retrieval issue, out of which one is based on information fusion while the other is grounded on collaboration of the results in a selective way. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper describes a topological SLAM system using a purely vision-based approach. This robot utilizes a GPU-based omnidirectional catadioptric stereovision system to perceive and plan its path in the environment. Subsequently, the omnidirectional images generated are used to incrementally build a database of image signatures based on the standard 2D Haar Wavelet decomposition. In order to maintain a globally consistent topological map, a relaxation algorithm, which requires local metric information between nodes, is employed each time the appearance-based localization system revisits an existing node in the topological map. The relative transformation of the current position of the robot with respect to the actual position of the matched node is recovered by using a least squares estimation of the transformation parameters of two 3D point patterns generated by the stereovision system. In addition, local metric information is obtained by using the proposed visual odometry system which combines distance measurements calculated by using optical flow techniques which estimates the movement of a web camera relative to the ground being observed and bearing estimates from the omnidirectional catadioptric vision system. Experiments were conducted in a variety of environments ranging from indoor to outdoor environments which demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.

This paper describes a probabilistic online map merging system for a single mobile robot. It performs intermittent exploration by fusing laser scan matching and omnidirectional vision. Moreover, it can also be adapted to a multi-robot system for large scale environments. Map merging is achieved by means of a probabilistic Haar-based place recognition system using omnidirectional images and is capable of discriminating new and previously visited locations in the current or previously collected maps. This dramatically reduces the search space for laser scan matching. The combination of laser range finding and omnidirectional vision is very attractive because they reinforce one another when there is sufficient structure and visual information in the environment. In other cases, they complement one another, leading to improved robustness of the system. This is the first system to combine a probabilistic Haar-based place recognition system using omnidirectional images with laser range finding to merge maps. The proposed system is also algorithmically simple, efficient and does not require any offline processing. Experimental results of the approach clearly illustrate that the proposed system can perform both online map merging and exploration robustly using a single robot configuration in a real indoor lab environment.
