This paper presents a formulation for fractional time-optimal control problems in terms of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives. For solution seeking purpose, the fractional operator is approximated using a rational approximation of the Hankel data matrix of the impulse response and the problem is reformulated. The problem is thoroughly studied for a fractional double integrator, and the solution is obtained by both numerical optimization and time-domain analysis.

This paper presents a method that considers not only patch appearances, but also patch relationships in the form of adjectives and prepositions for natural scene recognition. Most of the existing scene categorization approaches only use patch appearances or co-occurrence of patch appearances to determine the scene categories, but the relationships among patches remain ignored. Those relationships are, however, critical for recognition and understanding. For example, a `beach' scene can be characterized by a `sky' region above `sand', and a `water' region between `sky' and `sand'. We believe that exploiting such relations between image regions can improve scene recognition. In our approach, each image is represented as a spatial pyramid, from which we obtain a collection of patch appearances with spatial layout information. We apply a feature mining approach to get discriminative patch combinations. The mined patch combinations can be interpreted as adjectives or prepositions, which are used for scene understanding and recognition. Experimental results on a fifteen class scene dataset show that our approach achieves competitive state-of-the-art recognition accuracy, while providing a rich description of the scene classes in terms of the mined adjectives and prepositions.

This work deals with plasma position estimation,modeling, and control for the ‘Saskatchewan Torus 1- Modified(STOR-1M)' tokamak. The basic operating mechanism and system details are presented initially to provide the reader with a complete understanding of the plant and the control objective. The data required for plasma position estimation and the methodology used is briefly presented, followed by plasma position modeling. An effective method for offline plasma position estimation is presented. The simulated results for position control using a standard(Ziegler-Nichols) ZN-PID controller and a(Fractional Order) FO-PI controller are compared with each other. The problems that arise when dealing with such a fastoperating and challenging system are detailed throughout. The results obtained using analog hardware to emulate the plasma position and purely analog FO-PI control are also included.

This paper presents a decentralized fault detection scheme for a class of distributed large-scale nonlinear uncertain systems. The fault detection architecture consists of interacting local detection filters, one for each subsystem. Under certain assumptions, several important properties of the decentralized fault diagnosis scheme are rigorously investigated. The fault detection threshold for each decentralized detection filter is derived. The detectability analysis characterizes the class of faults that can be detected by the presented scheme. The fault detection time analysis provides an upper bound on the time it takes to detect a fault after its occurrence. The stability and performance analysis deals with the bondededness of all system signals in the adaptive estimation model and characterizes the bounds on the estimation error signals. A simulation example is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An approach is presented to show how contents can be created through an inter-play between the ontology of their key segments and the ontology of problem context using the knowledge on some nominal values which stand for the way linguistically-significant notions are tackled. The approach seems to be suitable for any kind of organizational task for which these nominal values can be defined in a reasonable way.

In recent years, new structural health monitoring (SHM) methodologies with a concept of "instantaneous baseline damage detection" are being developed by many researchers, since it has been found that the most of SHM technologies are too vulnerable to environmental and/or operational variations. In this context, this paper presents online instantaneous baseline structural damage detection using a low cost and low power, in-situ guided waves-SHM system. Firstly, four small, low cost and light weight smart piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) patches are surface-mounted and assumed to have the same bonding conditions to detect structural defects on an aluminum plate. Then, a miniaturized low power guided waves-SHM system with a digital signal processing (DSP) module is employed for signal generation/excitation, signal sensing, and data processing. The instantaneous baseline damage detection based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) analysis is carried out on the DSP module. Finally, effects of Lamb waves due to artificial "cut-damage' with different locations are investigated using both "pitch-catch" and "pulse-echo" wave propagation schemes. Conclusively, this study shows a good potential for online and in-situ crack monitoring on panel structures such as an aircraft wing.

In networked control systems (NCS), the spiky nature of the random delays makes us wonder about the benefits we can expect if the "spikiness", or what we call "delay dynamics" are considered in the NCS controller design. It turns out that the "spikiness" of the network induced random delays can be better characterized by the so-called alpha-stable processes, or processes with fractional lower-order statistics (FLOS) which are linked to fractional calculus. Using a real world networked control system platform called the CSOIS Smart Wheel, the effect of modeling the network delay dynamics using non-Gaussian distributions, and compensating for such a delay in closed-loop systems using a FO-PI (fractional order proportional and integral) controller has been experimentally studied. The cases studied include the case when the delay compensated is exactly the same as the actual delay. Other scenarios are the ones when the nature of the estimated delay is similar to the actual delay, but the magnitude is slightly smaller. The effect of phase shifting between the estimated and the original delay is also considered. Finally the order of the fractional order proportional integral controller which gives least ITAE, ISE for a particular distribution of the delay is presented. The conclusion is strikingly stimulating: in NCS, when the random delay is spiky, we should consider to model the delay dynamics using alpha-stable distributions and using fractional order controller whose best fractional order has shown to be related to the FLOS parameter alpha as evidenced by our extensive experimental results on a real NCS platform.

Artificial bacterial flagella (ABF) are swimming microrobots that mimic the swimming motion of bacteria. The helical swimmer consists of an InGaAs/GaAs/Cr helical nanobelt tail fabricated by a self-scrolling technique with dimensions similar to a natural flagellum, and a thin soft-magnetic metal ¿head¿ consisting of a Cr/Ni/Au multi-layer. The swimming locomotion of ABF is precisely controlled in 3-D by external rotating magnetic fields. Microsphere manipulation is performed by ABF, and experimental results show that both the position and the orientation of microspheres can be precisely controlled. The propelling force of ABF is in the pico-Newton range. We also describe a swarm-like behavior in which three ABF swim in a pack, indicating the potential to handle several micro objects in parallel. Self-propelled devices such as these are candidates for wireless 6-DOF micro and nanomanipulation tools for handling cellular and sub-cellular objects.

Fingerprinting localization techniques provide reliable location estimates and enable the development of location aware applications especially for indoor environments, where satellite based positioning is infeasible. In our approach we utilize received signal strength (RSS) fingerprints collected in known locations and employ a radial basis function (RBF) neural network to approximate the function that maps fingerprints to location coordinates. We present a clustering scheme to reduce the size and computational complexity of the RBF architecture and demonstrate the applicability of this approach in a real-world WLAN setup. Experimental results indicate that the RBF based method is an efficient approach to the location determination problem that outperforms existing techniques in terms of the positioning error.
