Optimal Sensor Placement for Full-Set TDOA Localization Accounting for Sensor Location Errors

The positioning accuracy of a signal source is influenced by where the sensors are deployed. Studies in the literature for the optimal sensor placement (OSP) of localization often ignore the presence of sensor position errors. In practice, however, it is impossible to place the sensors precisely at the desired locations. This work designs OSP by accounting for the presence of Gaussian sensor position errors that are independent and identically distributed (IID), with the full set of Time Difference of Arrival measurements corrupted by Gaussian IID noise. The criterion is the A-optimality equal to the trace of the source position Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB). We show that the presence of sensor position errors introduces a multiplication factor to the same criterion for the case without sensor position errors. The latter factor is dependent on the ratio of the sensor position error power to the range difference noise power but independent of the sensor positions, implying that the A-optimality OSP in the presence of sensor position errors is the same as in the absence. To our knowledge, this is the first time such results have been derived. Simulation studies validate the derived OSP, show the minimal OSP performance gap with sensor positioning error and without, and illustrate the better source localization accuracy by OSP. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

Market Design for Capacity Sharing in Networks

We study a market mechanism that sets edge prices to incentivize strategic agents to efficiently share limited network capacity. In this market, agents form coalitions, with each coalition sharing a unit capacity of a selected route and making payments to cover edge prices. Our focus is on the existence and computation of market equilibrium, where challenges arise from the interdependence between coalition formation among strategic agents with heterogeneous preferences and route selection that induces a network flow under integral capacity constraints. To address this interplay between coalition formation and network capacity utilization, we introduce a novel approach based on combinatorial auction theory and network flow theory. We establish sufficient conditions on the network topology and agents’ preferences that guarantee both the existence and polynomial-time computation of a market equilibrium. Additionally, we identify a particular market equilibrium that maximizes utilities for all agents and is equivalent to the classical Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism. Furthermore, we extend our results to multi-period settings and general networks, showing that when the sufficient conditions are not met, an equilibrium may still exist but requires more complex, path-based pricing mechanisms that set differentiated prices based on agents’ preference parameters. We study a class of prediction problems in which relatively few observations have associated responses, but all observations include both standard covariates as well as additional "helper" covariates. While the end goal is to make high-quality predictions using only the standard covariates, helper covariates can be exploited during training to improve prediction. Helper covariates arise in many applications, including forecasting in time series;incorporation of biased or mis-calibrated predictions from foundation models;and sharing information in transfer learning. We propose "prediction aided by surrogate training" (PAST), a class of methods that exploit labeled data to construct a response estimator based on both the standard and helper covariates;and then use the full dataset with pseudo-responses to train a predictor based only on standard covariates. We establish guarantees on the prediction error of this procedure, with the response estimator allowed to be constructed in an arbitrary way, and the final predictor fit by empirical risk minimization over an arbitrary function class. These upper bounds involve the risk associated with the oracle data set (all responses available), plus an overhead that measures the accuracy of the pseudo-responses. This theory characterizes both regimes in which PAST accuracy is comparable to the oracle accuracy, as well as more challenging regimes where it behaves poorly. We demonstrate its empirical performance across a range of applications, including forecasting of societal ills over time with future covariates as helpers;prediction of cardiovascular risk after heart attacks with prescription data as helpers;and diagnosing pneumonia from chest X-rays using machine-generated predictions as helpers. © 2024, CC BY.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) faces significant challenges in achieving high efficiency and stable output power for charging mobile devices like EVs. Using circular pads (CP) as the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and a self-oscillating controlled inverter, this paper demonstrates a robust WPT system that maintains high constant transfer efficiency and output power in a defined region regardless of coupling coefficient variations without communication between Tx and Rx or control circuits for the receiver side. In contrast to couplers with non-identical Tx and Rx pads and multiple decoupled coils in the Rx pad, the compact CP-CP magnetic coupler with a single identical coil on the Tx and Rx is more robust at a wider transfer distance (air gap) and lateral and rotational misalignment between the Tx and Rx. The proposed 1-kW robust WPT system with up to a 20 cm air gap between the Tx and Rx and up to 12 cm lateral misalignment in all directions at a 15 cm air gap and all degrees of rotational misalignment can tolerate coupling variations and achieve constant output power with 93% constant transfer efficiency.

Distributed computing enables Internet of vehicle (IoV) services by collaboratively utilizing the computing resources from the network edge and the vehicles. However, the computing interruption issue caused by frequent edge network handoffs, and a severe shortage of computing resources are two problems in providing IoV services. High altitude platform station (HAPS) computing can be a promising addition to existing distributed computing frameworks because of its wide coverage and strong computational capabilities. In this regard, this paper proposes an adaptive scheme in a new distributed computing framework that involves HAPS computing to deal with the two problems of the IoV. Based on the diverse demands of vehicles, network dynamics, and the time-sensitivity of handoffs, the proposed scheme flexibly divides each task into three parts and assigns them to the vehicle, roadside units (RSUs), and a HAPS to perform synchronous computing. The scheme also constrains the computing of tasks at RSUs such that they are completed before handoffs to avoid the risk of computing interruptions. On this basis, we formulate a delay minimization problem that considers task-splitting ratio, transmit power, bandwidth allocation, and computing resource allocation. To solve the problem, variable replacement and successive convex approximation–based method are proposed. The simulation results show that this scheme not only avoids the negative effects caused by handoffs in a flexible manner, it also takes delay performance into account and maintains the delay stability. Inductive wireless charging has emerged as a viable solution for charging electric vehicles (EVs) both in stationary mode and on the go, i.e., dynamic charging. EVs are produced at a commercial level, and their wired charging stations are widely available. However, challenges still restrict the development of wireless charging infrastructure on a commercial scale. One significant challenge is the presence of foreign objects on the magnetic coupler surface. Although several foreign object detection (FOD) methods exist, the implementation of each method is cost-dependent. Among these methods, the parametric detection method is considered the most cost-effective. However, the effective precision of this method is still debatable. In this article, the performance of the magnetic coupler is analyzed under the influence of different materials as foreign objects. The analysis presented in this article is threefold. Firstly, a mathematical model of the magnetic coupler in the presence of a foreign object is developed. Secondly, the effect of different materials is analyzed as a function of coil parameters, including inductance, resistance, and coil losses. Lastly, the magnetic field distribution and magnitude are studied using finite element analysis (FEA). The influence of these materials is ultimately evaluated in terms of output power losses and efficiency. The study concludes that the presence of aluminium as a foreign object is responsible for significant power losses in the wireless power transfer system.

Partial discharge (PD) is a common and detrimental phenomenon that can cause damage and potential breakdown in insulation systems. According to the air breakdown voltage behaviors shown by Paschen's curve, from sea level to high altitude, the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of the air is expected to decrease with decreasing pressure. So far, there has not been a widely accepted PD testing method for aviation wires in low pressure environments with pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage excitations. There have been studies of the PD behaviors of aviation wires with conventional triangular impulses, ac voltages, and PWM pulses with relatively low dv/dt. But existing test methods and study results cannot be directly utilized to test and predict PDIV of aviation wires when high dv/dt PWM excitation is applied with wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices, such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). Thus, this paper aims to provide more insights on PD behaviors of aviation wires under high dv/dt PWM excitations and possible ways to improve the existing PD test methods. A test setup including an ultra-high dv/dt PWM generator, a test sample fixture, and associated PD sensors including a photomultiplier tube (PMT), a high frequency current transducer (HFCT), and an ultra-high-frequency (UHF) antenna will be introduced. Experimental results and associated analysis for aviation wire test samples at various pressures under high dv/dt PWM excitations will be presented. The effect of the rise time of the PWM will be discussed in detail. Suggestions on how to improve test methods and test standards will be provided. © 2022 IEEE.

Background: The determination of the mechanical properties of biological samples using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) at the nanoscale is usually performed using basic models arising from the contact mechanics theory. In particular, the Hertz model is the most frequently used theoretical tool for data processing. However, the Hertz model requires several assumptions, such as homogeneous and isotropic samples and indenters with perfectly spherical or conical shapes. As it is widely known, none of these requirements are 100 % fulfilled for the case of indentation experiments at the nanoscale. As a result, significant errors arise in the Young’s modulus calculation. At the same time, an analytical model that could account complexities of soft biomaterials, such as nonlinear behavior, anisotropy, and heterogeneity, may be far-reaching. In addition, this hypothetical model would be ‘too difficult’ to be applied in real clinical activities since it would require a very heavy workload and highly specialized personnel. Objective: In this paper, a simple solution is provided to the aforementioned dead-end. A new approach is introduced in order to provide a simple and accurate method for mechanical characterization at the nanoscale. Method: The ratio of the work done by the indenter on the sample of interest to the work done by the indenter on a reference sample is introduced as a new physical quantity that does not require homogeneous, isotropic samples or perfect indenters. Results: The proposed approach provides an accurate solution from not only a physical perspective but also a simpler solution which does not require activities such as the determination of the cantilever’s spring constant and the dimensions of the AFM tip. Conclusion: It has been observed from this opinion paper that the solution aims to provide a significant opportunity to overcome the existing limitations provided by Hertzian mechanics and apply AFM techniques in real clinical activities. © 2021 Bentham

The joint optimization of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) offers a mutually beneficial solution. In this paper, we study a RIS-assisted downlink user grouping-based hierarchical RSMA communication network, where the base station transmits the common streams and private streams simultaneously to serve multiple users. The sum rate (SR) optimization problem is constructed to jointly optimize user grouping, beamforming, and rate splitting. To tackle the NP-hard problem, a user grouping algorithm is first provided to form the hierarchical RSMA model. Next, an equivalent weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) problem is constructed and a WMMSE-based block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is designed to update the remaining variables in an iterated way. Specifically, the optimization of transmit beamforming and the rate splitting matrix is reduced to solving a typical convex quadratically constrained quadratic program problem. The solution for passive beamforming is recovered from the intermediate result obtained by the manifold optimization method. Finally, the process of the BCD algorithm is presented. The numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme evidently surpasses one-layer RSMA scheme, NOMA scheme, SDMA scheme, and no RIS scheme, especially in overloaded scenarios. The proposed scheme further increases the SR of common steams compared to the hierarchical RSMA scheme and significantly reduces computational complexity compared to the generalized RSMA scheme. © 2015 IEEE.
