Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) introduces intermediate aggregation layers, addressing the limitations of conventional Federated Learning (FL) in geographically dispersed environments with limited communication infrastructure. An application of HFL is in smart IoT systems, such as remote monitoring, disaster response, and battlefield operations, where cellular connectivity is often unreliable or unavailable. In these scenarios, UAVs serve as mobile aggregators, providing connectivity to the terrestrial IoT devices. This paper studies an HFL architecture for energy-constrained UAVs in smart IoT systems, pioneering a solution to minimize global training cost increased caused by UAV disconnection. In light of this, we formulate a joint optimization problem involving learning configuration, bandwidth allocation, and device-to-UAV association, and perform global aggregation in time before UAV drops disconnect and redeployment of UAVs. The problem explicitly accounts for the dynamic nature of IoT devices and their interruptible communications and is unveiled to be NP-hard. To address this, we decompose it into three subproblems. First, we optimize the learning configuration and bandwidth allocation using an augmented Lagrangian function to reduce training costs. Second, we propose a device fitness score, integrating data heterogeneity (via Kullback-Leibler divergence), device-to-UAV distances, and IoT device resources, and develop a twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3)-based algorithm for dynamic device-to-UAV assignment. Third, We introduce a low-complexity two-stage greedy strategy for finding the location of UAVs redeployment and selecting the appropriate global aggregator UAV. Neural Temporal Point Processes (TPPs) have emerged as the primary framework for predicting sequences of events that occur at irregular time intervals, but their sequential nature can hamper performance for long-horizon forecasts. To address this, we introduce a novel approach that incorporates a diffusion generative model. The model facilitates sequence-to-sequence prediction, allowing multi-step predictions based on historical event sequences. In contrast to previous approaches, our model directly learns the joint probability distribution of types and inter-arrival times for multiple events. The model is composed of two diffusion processes, one for the time intervals and one for the event types. These processes interact through their respective denoising functions, which can take as input intermediate representations from both processes, allowing the model to learn complex interactions. We demonstrate that our proposal outperforms state-of-the-art baselines for long-horizon forecasting of TPPs.

Robust training of machine learning models in the presence of outliers has garnered attention across various domains. The use of robust losses is a popular approach and is known to mitigate the impact of outliers. We bring to light two literatures that have diverged in their ways of designing robust losses: one using M-estimation, which is popular in robotics and computer vision, and another using a risk-minimization framework, which is popular in deep learning. We first show that a simple modification of the Black-Rangarajan duality provides a unifying view. The modified duality brings out a definition of a robust loss kernel σ that is satisfied by robust losses in both the literatures. Secondly, using the modified duality, we propose an Adaptive Alternation Algorithm (AAA) for training machine learning models with outliers. The algorithm iteratively trains the model by using a weighted version of the non-robust loss, while updating the weights at each iteration. The algorithm is augmented with a novel parameter update rule by interpreting the weights as inlier probabilities, and obviates the need for complex parameter tuning. Thirdly, we investigate convergence of the adaptive alternation algorithm to outlier-free optima. Considering arbitrary outliers (i.e., with no distributional assumption on the outliers), we show that the use of robust loss kernels σ increases the region of convergence. Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) enables users to delegate the keyword search over dynamically updated encrypted databases to an honest-but-curious server without losing keyword privacy. This paper studies a new and practical security risk to DSSE, namely, secret key compromise (e.g., a user’s secret key is leaked or stolen), which threatens all the security guarantees offered by existing DSSE schemes. To address this open problem, we introduce the notion of searchable encryption with key-update (SEKU) that provides users with the option of non-interactive key updates. We further define the notion of post-compromise secure with respect to leakage functions to study whether DSSE schemes can still provide data security after the client’s secret key is compromised. We demonstrate that post-compromise security is achievable with a proposed protocol called "Bamboo". Interestingly, the leakage functions of Bamboo satisfy the requirements for both forward and backward security. We conduct a performance evaluation of Bamboo using a real-world dataset and compare its runtime efficiency with the existing forward-and-backward secure DSSE schemes. This paper deals with an intelligent decision-making strategy of energy management for a smart grid within an element storage in order to reduce the system cost and improve its reliability. Indeed, the integration of distributed energy storage devices allows the customers to store energy and reuse at a later time or delayed some appliances operation according to a time-varying price signal. The adopted strategy is based on an artificial intelligence control algorithm 'fuzzy logic'. The main objective is to determine the appropriate source (grid or battery) used for meeting the consumer. The decision solution shows the system reliability where the switches are synchronized. Switches draw electricity from the grid for both load and battery when price is low and in contrary when electricity price is high, we find a variation's price correspondance with the switch drawing electricity from the battery. The obtained results are verified carrying out Matlab simulation using real data such as the electricity price (Price (t)) and the battery state of charge (SOC (t)). © 2023 IEEE.

The strategic incorporation of oriented steel in a segmented stator AC electric machine has the potential to enhance machine performance by reducing core losses compared to a machine designed with non-oriented steel. However, the introduction of cut-edges and the stress on individual segments resulting from segmented stator construction may have unintended consequences. Despite several attempts to assess the impact of cut-edges or oriented steel on core losses in segmented stators, the literature lacks an analysis of the loss separation between tooth and back-iron components using manufactured stators. This gap in understanding prevents a comprehensive assessment of the true impact of using oriented steel in segmented stator construction for core loss improvement. In this work, the loss of each tooth and back-iron segment is calculated by conducting experiments with three different electromagnetic devices, specifically H-shaped steel laminations. By comparing the results from three manufactured stators, we elucidate the influence of oriented steel in proportion to the segmented stator construction.

The widespread use of information and communication technology in today's electrical grid makes it increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks resulting in major operational and security issues. The efficiency assessment of cyber threats and their negative impact on the system is important but challenging to detect, mitigate, or prevent. Conducting such evaluation on real systems infrastructure is impractical or even impossible. In this paper, we discuss the capabilities that we have in our laboratory facilities at the FIU's smart grid testbed research facility. The testbed was built as an integrated hardware-based AC/DC system where the hardware, software, and communication-based technology can be used to envision a complete Cyber-Physical smart grid framework. Our focus is on the substation automation system where we discuss the IEC 61850 security vulnerabilities and further assess the effect of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on the physical system. The DoS is being performed in two forms flooding attack and GOOSE poisoning attack. A case study of a transmission line fault of the proposed protection scheme is being conducted. Comparison and evaluation of the impact of DoS cyber-attacks on the physical system are discussed. The experimental results showed the impact of DoS attacks on the protection scheme's dependability and security, where the need to develop detection and mitigation techniques to overcome the IEC 61850 vulnerabilities.

Data center power supply units (PSU) have high power density due to the increasing power demand and their low profiles. Air cooling proves to be increasingly difficult in mitigating the hot spots, and it also consumes extra energy in fluid delivery, air conditioning, and rejection to the ambience. In this work, we redesign and modify the PSU cooling infrastructure and adopt quiescent immersion cooling. This design removes all active air-cooling elements and enables heat capture. The PSU used in the experiments is a 2 kW 80 Plus Platinum commercial unit (Bel PET2000-12-074RA). The cooling performance was characterized by tracking the steady-state case temperatures of the switching semiconductors. Flutec PP1 was used to study the cooling performance variations with respect to PSU load and capture temperature. Conventional fan-cooled PSU with heat sinks served as the benchmark. Experiments show that two-phase immersion cooling grants an overall enhancement of 4.4× over the original air-cooling approach at 40 °C heat capture. The results suggest that heat rejection from the dielectric fluid to the riding heatsink is the main bottleneck, and further reduction of the thermal resistance would allow heat capture at a temperature closer to the liquid boiling point. The PSU thermal management approach studied here can help lower data center power usage effectiveness (PUE) while increasing PSU power delivery density.
