This paper presents a communication network model used to study the impact of the communication layer on smart grid protection schemes. Communication failure due to hardware malfunction or cyber-attack could lead to major impacts on the smart grid. Some critical devices require real-time data or close to real-time to make the right decision at the right time and keep the system in a stable zone, such as a protection relay. Active man in the middle attack adds additional latency to the packet delivery. A false data injection attack could drive the system to an unstable point, eventually leading to a blackout. This paper designed and implemented communication emulation model for a local area network on the FIU smart grid testbed. Two cases were tested in the developed communication model. In the first case, two physical raspberry pi boards were used to represent two nodes in the smart grid and one traffic generated within the virtual network. In the second case, five ABB Protection Relays and COM600 substation automation devices were connected to GNS3. The two cases showed that GNS3 could be used to emulate the communications network and study the impact of the network performance on the real-world substation environment.

6th Place Solution to Google Universal Image Embedding

This paper presents the 6th place solution to the Google Universal Image Embedding competition on Kaggle. Our approach is based on the CLIP architecture;a powerful pre-trained model used to learn visual representations from natural language supervision. We also utilized the SubCenter ArcFace loss with dynamic margins to improve the distinctive power of class separability and embeddings. Finally, a diverse dataset has been created based on the test’s set categories and the leaderboard’s feedback. By carefully crafting a training scheme to enhance transfer learning, our submission scored 0.685 on the private leaderboard. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cross-Modal Generative Semantic Communications for Mobile AIGC: Joint Semantic Encoding and Prompt engineering

Employing massive Mobile AI-Generated Content (AIGC) Service Providers (MASPs) with powerful models, high-quality AIGC services can become accessible for resource-constrained end users. However, this advancement, referred to as mobile AIGC, also introduces a significant challenge: users should download large AIGC outputs from the MASPs, leading to substantial bandwidth consumption and potential transmission failures. In this paper, we apply cross-modal Generative Semantic Communications (G-SemCom) in mobile AIGC to overcome wireless bandwidth constraints. Specifically, we utilize a series of cross-modal attention maps to indicate the correlation between user prompts and each part of AIGC outputs. In this way, the MASP can analyze the prompt context and filter the most semantically important content efficiently. Only semantic information is transmitted, with which users can recover the entire AIGC output with high quality while saving mobile bandwidth. Since the transmitted information not only preserves the semantics but also prompts the recovery, we formulate a joint semantic encoding and prompt engineering problem to optimize the bandwidth allocation among users. Particularly, we present a human-perceptual metric named Joint Perpetual Similarity and Quality (JPSQ), which is fused by two learning-based measurements regarding semantic similarity and aesthetic quality, respectively. Furthermore, we develop the Attention-aware Deep Diffusion (ADD) algorithm, which learns attention maps and leverages the diffusion process to enhance the environment exploration ability of traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal can reduce the bandwidth consumption of mobile users by 49.4% on average, with almost no perceptual difference in AIGC output quality. RIS-Assisted Passive Localization (RAPL): An Efficient Zero-Overhead Framework Using Conditional Sample Mean

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has been recognized as a promising solution for enhancing localization accuracy. Traditional RIS-based localization methods typically rely on prior channel knowledge, beam scanning, and pilot-based assistance. These approaches often result in substantial energy and computational overhead, and require real-time coordination between the base station (BS) and the RIS. To address these challenges, in this work, we move beyond conventional methods and introduce a novel data-driven, multiple RISs-assisted passive localization approach (RAPL). The proposed method includes two stages, the angle-of-directions (AoDs) between the RISs and the user is estimated by using the conditional sample mean in the first stage, and then the user’s position is determined based on the estimated multiple AoD pairs in the second stage. This approach only utilizes the existing communication signals between the user and the BS, relying solely on the measurement of received signal power at each BS antenna for a set of randomly generated phase shifts across all RISs. Moreover, by obviating the need for real-time RIS phase shift optimization or user-to-BS pilot transmissions, the method introduces no additional communication overhead, making it highly suitable for deployment in real-world networks. The proposed scheme is then extended to multi-RIS scenarios considering both parallel and cascaded RIS topologies. Numerical results show that the proposed RAPL improves localization accuracy while significantly reducing energy and signaling overhead compared to conventional methods. In recent years, the Mekong River Basin (MRB), one of the largest river basins in Southeast Asia, has experienced severe impacts from extreme droughts and floods. Streamflow forecasting has become crucial for effective risk management strategies in the region. However, this task presents significant challenges due to rapid climate changes and the presence of numerous newly constructed upstream dams, which disrupt the natural flow. In this paper, we develop multiple deep learning models (incl. Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long short-term Memory (LSTM), and Transformer) to predict streamflow with different lead time forecasts based on observed meteorological variables and climatic indices (i.e., discharge, water level, precipitation, and temperature) from 1979 to 2019. The results indicate that LSTM obtains high performance for streamflow prediction in both dry and wet seasons while Transformer is not recommended for long-term prediction, especially in the dry season. The proposed deep learning models capture well the fluctuation of river flow in the MRB during the period of high-dam development, especially LSTM (NSE ≥ 0.8). The models' performances are enhanced with the adding of temperature for short-term prediction while precipitation was the most sensitive variable for long-term one. Such proposed models are essential for government agencies to plan mitigation and adaptation strategies at different periods, which can range from days to years. © 2013 IEEE.

A spontaneous group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is denoted as a swarm of UAVs (S-UAVs). The UAVs communicate wirelessly and cooperate to accomplish tasks. In crisis scenarios such as flooding or earthquakes, all UAVs are at risk of getting damaged and thus non-functional. A non- functional UAV will result in a disconnected network, especially if that UAV is highly responsible for packet forwarding. S- UAV s are dynamic networks; clustering is one of the most adopted routing schemes in S-UAVs. The clustering scheme groups the UAVs into clusters where each cluster is formed of a cluster head (CH) and cluster members (CMs). Only the CH can handle inter-cluster communication. Due to the crucial role played by the CH, its selection is a continuous field of research. This paper proposes an enhanced clustered weighted scheme with redundancy to ensure end-to-end communication. The proposed scheme is based on a weighted formula for the primary CH, redundant CH, and CMs selection. The weighted formula calculates a cluster index based on the distance, the speed, and the reward index. A new component is added to the reward index which is performance. The redundant CH is selected to automatically replace the primary CH whenever it is damaged. If the redundant CH becomes inoperable, the second redundant CH will take over. Each cluster is formed of n CMs and will have n-2 redundant CHs. The results obtained from the conducted simulation experiments concluded that this promising scheme decreases data loss in a crisis case scenario.

A swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (S-UAVs) consists of UAVs flying together with the target of accomplishing a certain task in a faster and more reliable way as compared to a single UAV. In a crisis scenario, UAVs have been widely used in rescue missions. Clustering is one of the most reliable routing schemes for S-UAVs. The UAVs are grouped into clusters with a cluster-head (CH) and cluster-members (CM). The CH plays a major role in clustering schemes as it handles all inter-cluster communication. In a crisis case, any UAV is at risk of getting non-functional, thus resulting in a disconnected cluster. This paper proposes a new clustering scheme based on K-means and weighted formulas. The K-means protocol is applied to generate pilot phase clusters. Afterward, whenever the metrics of the networks are established, the weighted formula is applied for cluster formation and CH selection. The weighted formula is based on the performance index, the relative movement, and the remaining energy. To ensure end-to-end communication despite CH non-functionality, our proposed protocol selects a redundant CH for every CH. This protocol had been simulated using MATLAB. The results obtained and analyzed towards the end of this paper demonstrate that the proposed scheme is very promising.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to revolutionize transportation, but their effective integration into the real world requires addressing the challenge of interacting with human drivers. Real-world driving involves negotiating and cooperating with fellow drivers through social cues, necessitating AVs to also demonstrate such social compatibilities. However, despite the popularity, current learning-based control methods for AV policy synthesis often overlook this crucial aspect. In this work, we look at the problem of enabling socially compatible driving when AV control policies are learned. We leverage human driving data to learn a social preference model of human driving and then integrate it with reinforcement learning-based AV policy synthesis using Social Value Orientation theory. In particular, we propose to use multi-task reinforcement learning to learn diverse social compatibility levels in driving (ex: altruistic, prosocial, individualistic, and competitive), focusing on the requirement of having diverse behaviors in real-world driving. Using highway driving scenarios, we demonstrate through experiments that socially compatible AV driving not only enables naturalistic driving behaviors but also reduces collision rates from the baseline. Our findings reveal that without social compatibility, AV policies tend to adopt dangerously competitive driving behaviors, while the incorporation of social compatibility fosters smoother vehicle maneuvers.
