The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.

FPGA based unified architecture for public key and private key cryptosystems

Recently, security in embedded system arises attentions because of modern electronic devices need cau- tiously either exchange or communicate with the sensitive data. Although security is classical research topic in world- wide communication, the researchers still face the problems of how to deal with these resource constraint devices and en- hance the features of assurance and certification. Therefore, some computations of cryptographic algorithms are built on hardware platforms, such as field program gate arrays （FPGAs）. The commonly used cryptographic algorithms for digital signature algorithm （DSA） are rivest-shamir-adleman （RSA） and elliptic curve cryptosystems （ECC） which based on the presumed difficulty of factoring large integers and the algebraic structure of elliptic curves over finite fields. Usu- ally, RSA is computed over GF（p）, and ECC is computed over GF（p） or GF（2P）. Moreover, embedded applications need advance encryption standard （AES） algorithms to pro- cess encryption and decryption procedures. In order to reuse the hardware resources and meet the trade-off between area and performance, we proposed a new triple functional arith- metic unit for computing high radix RSA and ECC operations over GF（p） and GF（2P）, which also can be extended to support AES operations. A new high radix signed digital （SD） adder has been proposed to eliminate the carry propagations over GF（p）. The proposed unified design took up 28.7% less hardware resources than implementing RSA, ECC, and AES individually, and the experimental results show that our proposed architecture can achieve 141.8 MHz using approxi- mately 5.5k CLBs on Virtex-5 FPGA.

This paper presents a novel photonic control mechanism to control the turn-on transition of insulated gate power semi-conductor devices (PSDs), used in the hard switched power electronics applications. Turn-on transition control decreases the overshoot of the turn-on current caused by reverse-recovery current (IRR) of the free-wheeling diode (FWD) due to high slope of current during turn-on. It also adjusts the turn-on dv/dt to control the switching loss and electro-magnetic interference (EMI) while keeps the PSD in the safe-operating area. In contrast to other works, the proposed control method independently adjusts the turn-on di/dt and dv/dt in different operating conditions using a single circuit. The onset of transition between di/dt and dv/dt control regions is determined using a self-contained control circuit. The error between the desired and actual onset of transition is compensated using a partially activated PI compensator. Another feature of the presented work is using a single optical link for both pulse-width modulation (PWM) and switching transition control of an Optically-triggered (OT) hybrid device comprising an IGBT as the main PSD and a pair of GaAs-based optically-triggered power transistors (OTPTs) serving as the driver for the IGBT. The proposed control circuit operation and advantages are presented and verified by experimental results.

Polyimide-based enamel insulation is widely used on conductors that are employed in electric motors. Thus, the integrity of enamel insulation is extremely critical for the healthy operation of the motor. If the enamel insulation fails to isolate two neighboring conductors in an electric motor, a short circuit will occur that may possibly lead to the failure of the motor through a sequence of events. During the manufacturing of the windings of an electric motor, enamel-insulated copper conductors may be subjected to mechanical strain. This strain may adversely affect the electrical performance of the enamel insulation. Under the influence of an electric field, partial discharge in the insulated conductors may occur as one of the initial mechanisms that may eventually cause the insulation failure. Therefore, in order to predict the long term behavior of the enamel insulation, it seems to be sensible to quantify the partial discharge behavior of the enamel insulated conductors used in motors. Within the scope of this study, copper conductors having hairpin structures with rectangular cross-section in carbon powder were investigated and compared for their partial discharge behavior as well as breakdown voltages. Although the average partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) and partial discharge extinction voltage (PDEV) with conductor samples formed in the hairpin structure appeared to be closer to those of the unstrained, straight conductors investigated in our earlier study, the breakdown voltages (BDV) for conductors with hairpin structure were significantly lower than those of straight conductors.

Eventual failures in induction machines may lead to catastrophic consequences in terms of economic costs for the companies. The development of reliable systems for fault detection that enable to diagnose a wide range of faults is a motivation of many researchers worldwide. In this context, non-invasive condition monitoring strategies have drawn special attention since they do not require interfering with the operation process of the machine. Though the analysis of the motor currents has proven to be a reliable, non-invasive methodology to detect some of the faults (especially when assessing the rotor condition), it lacks reliability for the diagnosis of other faults (e.g. bearing faults). The infrared thermography has proven to be an excellent, non-invasive tool that can complement the diagnosis reached with the motor current analysis, especially for some specific faults. However, there are still some pending issues regarding its application to induction motor faults diagnosis, such as the lack of automation or the extraction of reliable fault indicators based on the infrared data. This paper proposes a methodology that intends to provide a solution to the first issue: a method based on image segmentation is employed to detect several failures in an automated way. Four specific faults are analyzed: bearing faults, fan failures, rotor bar breakages and stator unbalance. The results show the potential of the technique to automatically identify the fault present in the machine.

Cooperative behaviors are ubiquitous in nature and human *** is very important to understand the internal mechanism of emergence and maintenance of *** we know now,the offsprings inherit not only the phenotype but also the neighborhood relationship of their *** recent research results show that the interactions among individuals facilitate survival of cooperation through network reciprocity of clustering *** paper aims at introducing an inheritance mechanism of neighborhood relationship to explore the evolution of *** detail,a mathematical model is proposed to characterize the evolutionary process with the above inheritance *** analysis and numerical simulations indicate that high-level cooperation can emerge and be maintained for a wide variety of cost-to-benefit ratios,even if mutation happens during the evolving process.

The concept of Smart Grids is closely related to energy conservation and load shedding concepts. However, it is difficult to quantify the effectiveness of energy conservation efforts in residential settings without any sort of end-use energy information as feedback. In order to achieve that, load monitoring methods are normally used. In recent years, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) approaches are gaining popularity due to their minimal installation requirements and cost effectiveness. For a NILM system to work, only one sensor at the entry point to a home is required. Fluctuations in the aggregate power consumption signals are used to mathematically estimate the composition of operation of appliances. This approach eliminates the requirement of installing plug-meters for every appliance in the house. In this paper, we provide a review of recent research efforts on state-of-the-art NILM algorithms before concluding with a baseline and overall vision for our future research direction. © 2013 IEEE.

Non-intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is a hallmark of monitoring technologies. It provides appliance-level energy usage feedback with minimal sensor deployments. How-ever, existing NILM systems are not designed with embedded systems (e.g. Smart Meters) in mind. In this paper, we consider a Bayesian solution which efficiently computes the Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) of an appliance's on/off state, then combines it with historical estimates to yield a new estimate for improved accuracy. The detection of multiple appliances is achieved through an iterative method which also deals with unidentified appliances. With minimal multiplication and division, the algorithm is computationally lightweight and can easily be implemented in embedded systems using low-power processors. Despite the simplicity, results show promising disaggregation performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Instruction Set Customization is a well-known technique to enhance the performance and efficiency of Application-Specific Processors (ASIPs). An extensive application profiling can indicate which parts of a given application, or class of applications, are most frequently executed, enabling the implementation of such frequently executed parts in hardware as custom instructions. However, a naive ad hoc instruction set customization process may identify and select poor instruction extension candidates, which may not result in a significantly improved performance with low circuit-area and energy footprints. In this paper we propose and discuss an efficient instruction set customization method and automatic tool, which exploit the maximal common subgraphs (common operation patterns) of the most frequently executed basic blocks of a given application. The speed results from our tool for a VLIW ASIP are provided for a set of benchmark applications. The average execution time reduction ranges from 30% to 40%, with only a few custom instructions.

This demo presents a method of visual tracking using the output of an event-based asynchronous neuromorphic event-based camera. The approach is event-based thus adapted to the scene-driven properties of these sensors. The method allows to track multiple visual features in real time at a frequency of several hundreds kilohertz. It adapts to scene contents, combining both spatial and temporal correlations of events in an asynchronous iterative framework. Various kernels are used to track features from incoming events such as Gaussian, Gabor, combinations of Gabor functions and any hand-made kernel with very weak constraints. The proposed features tracking method can deal with feature variations in position, scale and orientation. The tracking performance is evaluated experimentally for each kernel to prove the robustness of the proposed solution.
