In general, a large amount of labels are needed for supervised learning algorithms to achieve satisfactory performance. It's typically very time-consuming and money-consuming to get such kind of labeled data. Recently, crowdsourcing services provide an effective way to collect labeled data with much lower cost. Hence, crowdsourced learning (CL), which performs learning with labeled data collected from crowdsourcing services, has become a very hot and interesting research topic in recent years. Most existing CL methods exploit only the labels from different workers (annotators) for learning while ignoring the attributes of the instances. In many real applications, the attributes of the instances are actually the most discriminative information for learning. Hence, CL methods with attributes have attracted more and more attention from CL researchers. One representative model of such kind is the personal classifier (PC) model, which has achieved the state-of-the-art performance. However, the PC model makes an unreasonable assumption that all the workers contribute equally to the final classification. This contradicts the fact that different workers have different quality (ability) for data labeling. In this paper, we propose a novel model, called robust personal classifier (RPC), for robust crowdsourced learning. Our model can automatically learn an expertise score for each worker. This expertise score reflects the inherent quality of each worker. The final classifier of our RPC model gives high weights for good workers and low weights for poor workers or spammers, which is more reasonable than PC model with equal weights for all workers. Furthermore, the learned expertise score can be used to eliminate spammers or low-quality workers. Experiments on simulated datasets and UCI datasets show that the proposed model can dramatically outperform the baseline models such as PC model in terms of classification accuracy and ability to detect spammers.

With the rapid growth of sensor technology, smart-phone sensing has become an effective approach to help improve the quality of applications in smartphones. However, the quality and quantity of the sensed data uploaded by the users are not always satisfying due to the lack of incentives for users to participate. In this paper, we design an incentive mechanism in which the users can get satisfying rewards from the platform by efficiently allocating their resources, and meanwhile, the platform can achieve a relatively high social welfare. Specifically, to solve the resource allocation problem in the incentive mechanism, we consider a cooperative game model with overlapping coalitions, in which the smartphone users can self-organize into the over-lapping coalitions for different sensing tasks. Then, we propose a distributed algorithm that converges to a stable outcome in which no user has the motivation to change its current resource allocation so as to increase its individual payoff unilaterally. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a better performance than the average distribution case and the single-task distribution case in various conditions.

The iVAT algorithm reorders (symmetric) dissimilarity data so that an image of the data may reveal cluster substructure. This paper extends the method so that it can handle asymmetric dissimilarity data. The extension is based on replacing the asymmetric input data with its unique least-squared error approximation by a symmetric matrix. Examples are given to illustrate the new method, called asymmetric iVAT (asiVAT).

Recent advances in embedded automation applications require quality of results in terms of speed and computational complexity, along with strict time-to-market schedules. To cope with these demands, the design industry is searching for novel approaches. Performance is sought by utilizing modern FPGA devices, offering hundreds of GFLOPs with maximum power efficiency. Productivity is enforced with HighLevel Synthesis (HLS) and Electronic System Level (ESL) design methodologies, that offer an efficient abstraction level to boost-up early prototyping. This paper presents a methodology and the required tool flow for the design of a System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture, as a reference for modern control applications. The advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) improved performance through hardware acceleration of demanding application cores, (b) improved quality of results with floating point calculations, (c) flexibility and integration of common peripheral devices supported by a RISC microcontroller and (d) improved designer productivity by avoiding Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) and other time consuming and error introducing procedures and working with C level design descriptions only. Experimental results show that the proposed SoC architecture is an efficient rapid prototyping platform for digital control applications, with very promising future extension capabilities. © 2013 Chinese Automation and computing Society in the UK - CACS.

We report a paper-based microbial fuel cell (MFC) generating a maximum power of 5.5 μW/cm 2 . The MFC features (1) a paper-based proton exchange membrane by infiltrating sulfonated sodium polystyrene sulfonate and (2) micro-fabricated paper chambers by patterning hydrophobic barriers of photoresist. Once a sample was added to the device, a current of 74 μA generated without any startup time. This paper-based MFC has the advantages of ease of use, low production cost, and high portability. The voltage produced was increased by 1.9× when two MFC devices were linked in series while operating lifetime was significantly enhanced in parallel.

Utility companies will seek additional electricity generation to satisfy the needs projected by increasing demands. Additional generation means investing in new power plants that will increase costs for the companies and customers. The increase in electric demand also includes increases in peak demands. Peak demands are mostly satisfied with costly and inefficient generators. In system planning for the future, given these circumstances, demand side management (DSM) needs to be given closer consideration, since it could be used to reduce peak demands. This paper proposes a DSM system using smart meters (SM) for load control. The proposed load control would reduce peak demands while not affecting the total power consumption by customers. The load control system would target appliances that consume larger amounts of power. Depending on a priority order, established by the customer, these appliances would be switched off for a period of time during the peak in demand. Additionally, customers would be able to use the Smart Meters to communicate back with the utility companies, reporting appliance use available for load control when the previous control periods are not active. This feature, our proposal, would allow a customer to switch on an appliance and decide to signal the utility company the availability for load control. The utility company could use this information and take action when system operation may require doing so.

In this paper, a photovoltatic (PV) farm construction plan for charging plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in a workplace parking lot is proposed. The system involves a developed smart power charging controller, an under construction PV farm and a DC distribution bus connected to the AC utility grid. In order to produce enough energy for the daily consumption of a certain number of PEVs at the same time limit the construction cost of the PV farm, the scale of the PV farm should be optimized. A stochastic model of PEVs daily energy consumption is used together with the historical solar irradiance data in this area to find the best scale of the PV farm through genetic algorithm (GA) optimization. Since the output power from the PV farm varies in different environmental situations, energy forecasting and distribution is achieved by using the smart power flow controller. One day period simulation of the hybrid PEVs charging system is done to demonstrate that the proposed plan can effectively support enough power for a certain number of PEVs with the maximum utilization of renewable energy and minimum grid impact.

This paper presents an analysis of the Dominican National interconnected electrical system (SENT) by incorporating a Static VAR Compensator (SVC) in the northern region of the system. A study involving this action would help improve low voltage profiles. A brief explanation on Flexible Alternate Current Transmission systems (FACTS) associated with this implementation is given. The SVC and its components are discussed. The SENT was described and the implementation of the SVC was performed in the modeled system in the DigSilent software. Tests were performed in steady state analysis' and conclusions were drawn from the results. An economic study was performed to determine the impact of the SVC in the system to improve the voltage profile of the whole system.

This paper presents discontinuous modeling and design of an Optimal Sequence-Based-Controller (OSBC) for a grid-connected isolated high-frequency-link (HFL) converter. The OSBC directly controls the switching sequences of the power devices without the need for an intermediate pulse-width modulator as in conventional power converter control schemes. OSBC is realized by solving an optimization problem, determining an optimal switching sequence (comprising a union of feasible sequences) and corresponding time horizon for each switching state of the sequence. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is realized using the Perturb & Observe algorithm as embedded in a unified OSBC controller optimizing the overall efficiency of the PV + HFL inverter. The effect of optimizing various control parameters with slow and fast dynamics at different scales is demonstrated. The results are verified using Matlab simulation for a 3 kW, 40 V/208 V three-phase inverter.
