Identifying a subspace containing signals of interest in additive noise is a basic system identification problem. Under natural assumptions, this problem is known as the Frisch scheme and can be cast as decomposing an n × n positive definite matrix as the sum of an unknown diagonal matrix (the noise covariance) and an unknown low-rank matrix (the signal covariance). Our focus in this paper is a natural class of random instances, where the low-rank matrix has a uniformly distributed random column space. In this setting we analyze the behavior of a well-known convex optimization-based heuristic for diagonal and low-rank decomposition called minimum trace factor analysis (MTFA). Conditions for the success of MTFA have an appealing geometric reformulation as finding a (convex) ellipsoid that exactly interpolates a given set of n points. Under the random model, the points are chosen according to a Gaussian distribution. Numerical experiments suggest a remarkable threshold phenomenon: if the (random) column space of the n × n low-rank matrix has codimension as small as 2n~(1/2) then with high probability MTFA successfully performs the decomposition task, otherwise it fails with high probability. In this work we provide numerical evidence and prove partial results in this direction, showing that with high probability MTFA recovers such random low-rank matrices of corank at least cn~β for β ∈ (5/6, 1) and some constant c.

This paper presents a novel approach to rapid, high power, high voltage capacitor charger that is fed from low voltage input source and achieves high efficiency in small dimensions. The charger is based on parallel resonant push-pull topology. Output current of the proposed charger is shown to be approximately constant regardless of the rising output voltage. The charged capacitor is fed by a linearly rising power profile. The behavior differs from series resonant and flyback charger topologies where output capacitor is fed by linearly decaying and constant power, respectively. The parallel resonant topology enables charging from a low voltage source using a relatively low transformer winding ratio, in one stage. The proposed charger is controlled by the digital controller dsPIC33FJ16GS502 (Microchip USA). Zero current soft switching is performed using a varying switching frequency based on continuous controller calculations during charging. Feasibility of the proposed charger and its control were tested experimentally on a prototype charger, which was operated at 0.7kW from a low input voltage source of 28V. The charger was loaded by an output capacitor of 250nF, which was charged at the rate of 600 charging cycles per second to 3kV. Good agreement was found between the proposed analytical model and experimental results. © 2013 IEEE.

Operators at electric grid control centers are faced with the task of making important decisions in real-time. With the plethora of data available it becomes important to extract information from the available data, based on which knowledge of system condition can be formed. This knowledge can then be used in decision making. Metrics such as transient stability margin (TSM) and voltage stability load index (VSLI) help in assessing the stability of the system. In this study, cellular neural network (CNN) based stability margin prediction system is developed in a distributed computing framework. The developed system not only extracts information from available data but also predicts the same, one step ahead of time. Moreover, the framework employed uses distributed computing and hence could be used on a large scale power system with a linear increase in computation time instead of an exponential increase. A reduced version of New Zealand's South Island power system is used as the test system to demonstrate the feasibility of CNNs for TSM and VSLI prediction.

Cloud computing is a recently developed new technology for complex systems with massive service sharing, which is different from the resource sharing of the grid computing systems. In a cloud environment, service requests from users go through numerous provider specific steps from the instant it is submitted to when the service is fully delivered. Quality modeling and analysis of clouds are not easy tasks because of the complexity of the provisioning mechanism and the dynamic cloud environment. This study proposes an analytical modelbased approach for quality evaluation of Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud and consider expected request completion time, rejection probability, and system overhead rate as key QoS metrics. It also features with the modeling of different warming and cooling strategies of machines and the ability to identify the optimal balance between system overhead and performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Multispeculative Functional Units (MSFUs) are arithmetic functional units that operate using several predictors for the carry signal. The carry prediction helps to shorten the critical path of the functional unit. The average performance of these units is determined by the hit rate of the prediction. In spite of utilizing more than one predictor, none or only one additional cycle is enough for producing the correct result in the majority of the cases. In this paper we present multispeculation as a way of increasing the performance of tree structures with a negligible area penalty. By judiciously introducing these structures into computation trees, it will only be necessary to predict in certain selected nodes, thus minimizing the number of operations that can potentially mispredict. Hence, the average latency will be diminished and thus performance will be increased. Our experiments show that it is possible to improve on average 24% and 38% execution time, when considering logarithmic and linear modules, respectively.

Leakage-resilient public key encryption (PKE) schemes are designed to resist "memory attacks", i.e., the adversary recovers the cryptographic key in the memory adaptively, but subject to constraint that the total amount of leaked information about the key is bounded by some parameter λ. Among all the IND-CCA2 leakage-resilient PKE proposals, the leakage-resilient version of the Cramer-Shoup cryptosystem (CS-PKE), referred to as the KL-CS-PKE scheme proposed by Naor and Segev in Crypto09, is the most practical one. But, the key leakage parameter λ and plaintext length m of KL-CS-PKE are subject to λ + m ≤ log q - ω(log κ), where κ is security parameter and q is the prime order of the group on which the scheme is based. Such a dependence between λ and m is undesirable. For example, when λ (resp., m) approaches to log q, m (resp., λ) approaches to 0. In this paper, we designed a new variant of CS-PKE that is resilient to key leakage chosen ciphertext attacks. Our proposal is λ ≤ log q - ω(log κ) leakage-resilient, and the leakage parameter λ is independent of the plaintext space that has the constant size q (exactly the same as that in CS-PKE). The performance of our proposal is almost as efficient as the original CS-PKE. As far as we know, this is the first leakage-resilient CS-type cryptosystem whose plaintext length is independent of the key leakage parameter, and is also the most efficient IND-CCA2 PKE scheme resilient to up to log q - ω(log κ) leakage. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

With the increasingly growing amount of service requests from the world-wide customers, the cloud systems is capable of providing services while meeting the customers' satisfaction. Recently, to achieve the better reliability and performance, the cloud systems has been largely depending on the geographically distributed data centers. Nevertheless, the dollar cost of service placement by service providers (SP) differ from the multiple regions. Accordingly, it is crucial to design a request dispatching and resource allocation algorithm to maximize net profit. The existing algorithms are either built upon energy-efficient schemes alone, or multi-type requests and customer satisfaction oblivious. They cannot be applied to multi-type requests and customer satisfaction-aware algorithm design with the objective of maximizing net profit. This paper proposes a customer satisfaction-aware algorithm based on the Ant-Colony Optimization (AMP) for geo-distributed data centers. By introducing the model of customer satisfaction, we formulate the utility (or net profit) maximization issue as an optimization problem under the constraints of customer satisfaction and data centers. AMP maximizes SP net profit by dispatching service requests to the proper data centers and generating the appropriate amount of Virtual Machines (VMs) to meet customer satisfaction. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we have conducted the comprehensive simulation and compared with the other state-of-the-art algorithms. Conclusive results have demonstrated the effectiveness of AMP both in small and large scale problem.

The application of a multi-population based Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) to power system controller design is presented in this paper. PBIL is a combination of evolutionary optimization and competitive learning derived from artificial neural networks. Single population PBIL has recently received increasing attention in various engineering fields due to its effectiveness., easy implementation and robustness. Despite these strengths., PBIL still suffers from issues of loss of diversity in the population. The use of multi-population is seen as one way of increasing the diversity in the population. The approach is applied to power system controller design. Simulations results show that the multi-population PBIL approach performs better than the standard PBIL and is as effective as PBIL where adaptive learning is used.

While neurons in the brain are individually quite slow, collectively they can recognize concrete objects as well as abstract concepts very quickly. Motivated by this puzzling fact we propose biologically plausible algorithms that are capable of quickly recognizing similar graph structures. Graphs are combinatorial constructions and pose serious challenges to similarity testing. In this paper we use the transient behavior of random walk over graphs to compare their spectral resolution. We collect data from intrinsically parallel random walks to form a graph response function as an effective measure of graph similarity. Our algorithm could be a solution to the long standing mystery of content addressability in the brain.
