Mobile Edge computing for Multi-Services Digital Twin-Enabled IoT Heterogeneous Networks

A scheme for edge computing-enabled offloading in a digital twin (DT) enabled heterogeneous network (HetNet) of multi-services IoT devices (IDs) is proposed. This scheme optimizes the association and handover of IDs, offloading ratio, and resource allocation considering the number of IDs, deadline requirements, and resource capacities. The objective is to enhance future generation networks by considering the ID movement, diverse ID requests, and network heterogeneity. We formulate the problem as Joint ID assOciatIon, offloadiNg ratio, Wireless bandwidth and computing reSource allocation, and digital twin placEment (JOINWISE), aiming to minimize the task completion time of all IDs while considering ID movement. Since JOINWISE is a mixed-integer nonlinear problem, we decompose it into two sub-problems: the ID Association (IDA) problem and the offloading Ratio, DT plAcement, bandwiDth and computing resource allOcation (RADIO) problem. IDA can be solved by mapping it to a multi-dimensional multiple knapsacks problem. Due to the non-convexity, high dimension of decision variables, and dynamic HetNet environment of RADIO, we propose a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based reinforcement learning method to iteratively solve the two sub-problems. Simulation results have confirmed the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in tackling the JOINWISE problem. © 2015 IEEE.

To accomplish the net zero emission target, the current fuel-based transportation sector, which is the largest greenhouse gas emitter, needs to be decarbonized. Moving towards electrified ones is a highly promising solution to reduce carbon emissions. Aviation sectors, which rely on fossil fuels and emit harmful pollutants, are also being challenged by electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems. Fully electrifying aviation or all-electric aircraft (AEA) requires high-power density and low-system mass electric power systems (EPS) and MVDC emerges as a viable solution to address this critical need. Multilayer Multifunctional electrical Insulation (MMEI) systems can be a solution to address challenges towards higher voltages and higher density designs under aviation harsh environments. Many MMEI systems have been designed in our earlier work. However, only experimental testing can ascertain the intended MMEI systems' electrical insulation performance. This study presents an optimal approach to fabricating the flat samples of down-selected MMEI designs by a compression-molding process and is discussed in detail. For evaluating different fabrication approaches to determine the optimal one, partial discharge levels of built samples are measured and compared.

We present a distributed algorithm for a multiagent system in a collaborative setting including the cost of actions. We revise the distributed Max-Plus algorithm by presenting a new Cost Distributed Max-Plus (CD Max-Plus) algorithm by including the cost of actions in the interactions of agents, named Factored Value-MCTS-CD Max-Plus algorithm. The proposed Factored Value-MCTS-CD Max-Plus algorithm is online, anytime, distributed, and scalable in number of agents and their interactions. Our contribution is an alternative solution for solving cost Dec-POMDPs competing with the state of art methods and algorithms using MCTS and Max-Plus algorithms to exploit the locality of agent interactions for planning and acting. © 2022 IEEE.

Decentralized and Uncoordinated Learning of Stable Matchings: A Game-Theoretic Approach

We consider the problem of learning stable matchings with unknown preferences in a decentralized and uncoordinated manner, where "decentralized" means that players make decisions individually without the influence of a central platform, and "uncoordinated" means that players do not need to synchronize their decisions using pre-specified rules. First, we provide a game formulation for this problem with known preferences, where the set of pure Nash equilibria (NE) coincides with the set of stable matchings, and mixed NE can be rounded to a stable matching. Then, we show that for hierarchical markets, applying the exponential weight (EXP) learning algorithm to the stable matching game achieves logarithmic regret in a fully decentralized and uncoordinated fashion. Moreover, we show that EXP converges locally and exponentially fast to a stable matching in general markets. We also introduce another decentralized and uncoordinated learning algorithm that globally converges to a stable matching with arbitrarily high probability. Finally, we provide stronger feedback conditions under which it is possible to drive the market faster toward an approximate stable matching. Our proposed game-theoretic framework bridges the discrete problem of learning stable matchings with the problem of learning NE in continuous-action games. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Electrification is regarded as one of the most promising approaches to decarbonizing transportation. Due to its annual growth, the aviation industry has also been targeted to be decarbonized. Fully electrification of aviation or all-electric aircraft (AEA) requires high power density and low system mass electric power systems (EPS), and to this end, moving towards MVDC is preferred. In our previous work, numerous Multilayer Multifunctional electrical Insulation (MMEI) systems have been designed. However, the dielectric strength and time-to-failure of the designed MMEI systems can only be determined by experimental tests. In this paper, the process of fabricating flat samples of down-selected MMEI designs by a compressionmolding process is discussed in detail.

Electrifying the aviation sector, a key source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is critical for the United States to reach its net zero emissions target by 2050. The proposed all-electric aircraft (AEA) will need an electric power system (EPS) that offers high power density and low system mass, making medium voltage DC (MVDC) a better option than existing low voltage systems. The design and fabrication of power cables are pivotal for MVDC due to the thermal challenges the power cables face as a result of the low pressure (18.8 kPa) at a cruising altitude of wide-body passenger aircraft (12.2 km). The temperature distribution along the aircraft cable, largely determined by pressure, surface emissivity, and the shape of the surrounding surfaces, is expected to differ from that at atmospheric pressure because of the reduced heat transfer at lower pressure. In this regard, numerous designs of multilayer multifunctional electrical insulation (MMEI) systems have been presented in our earlier works and can satisfy these requirements. The optimal fabrication process of flat insulation samples of ARC-SC-T-MMEI design has been presented in our earlier work. This paper presents the optimized fabrication process of the cable configuration of ARCSC-T-MMEI design with aluminum hollow tube conductors by compression molding process.

Large-signal Stability Analysis of Grid-forming Inverters with Equivalent-circuit Models

This paper proposes an energy function-based direct method for large-signal stability assessment of grid-forming (GFM) inverters leveraging an equivalent-circuit representation of all involved control- and physical-layer dynamics. Three different primary controls, a standard inner-current outer-voltage cascaded-control architecture, output CL filter, and reference-current saturation limiting are featured in the modeling and analysis framework. A composite energy function for the GFM inverter is obtained by summing up individual energy contributions gleaned from the circuit representation. The approach can readily be generalized to different primary controls, output-filter arrangements, and current limiters since it is based on a circuit-theoretic foundation. Numerical simulations validate the efficacy of the approach in estimating the critical clearing time following a large-signal disturbance. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Network communication has been proven to be a very important tool and a key factor in the recent development and progress of the power grid operation. It is also considered as the foundation for the smart grid because information and communication are integrated into electricity distribution to achieve reliable and accurate knowledge of the power grid. In previous years, absorbing energy from substations and delivering it to customers was the only type of interaction we knew between utility companies and customers. Presently, the growing connections of small distributed generation units caused by the cost reduction of most of the technologies used in the generation and storage of electrical energy, along with the potential benefits of renewable energy have pushed many researchers to look into the improvement of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to ensure a bidirectional flow of power and data. Moreover, the evolution of information and communication technologies and its applications to smart grid have converted the smart grid into a cyber-physical system where vulnerabilities and additional security challenges such as cyber-threats and cyber-attacks have emerged. Previously, we have demonstrated that using machine learning-based processing on data gathered from communication networks and the power grid was a promising solution for detecting cyber threats by implementing a co-simulation of cyber-security for cross-layer strategy. Since the majority of the challenges observed can only be solved in the network communication layer, we present in this work a physics-based state estimation model of the communication network system towards enhanced cyber-physical security of the smart grid. Information integration with the previously developed machine learning model is developed, providing an enhanced cyber-physical security application for the smart grid. 3GPP standards (e.g., LTE and 5G New Radio (NR)) have revolutionized commercial broadband access. Unfortunately, the openness of 3GPP specifications and high-level of adaptability make fifth-generation (5G) networks increasingly sensitive to unsophisticated attacks in the network. While 5G NR has introduced frequency hopping (FH) for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), there has not been a unified approach to designing the FH patterns in practical 5G systems. In this paper, we investigate the multi-user FH design problem at the physical resource grid of the 5G communication networks. We present various criteria for FH pattern design and propose two algorithms that are implementable with low complexity. The first scheme utilizes known interference patterns to design a set of user equipment (UE) FH patterns that are immune to interfering attacks. The second scheme leverages interference statistics and minimizes the expected number of hits by the interferer. Through numerical simulations and analytical modeling, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed schemes, which outperform the uniform FH pattern and achieve near-optimal performance. © 2023 IEEE.

Learning causal representations from observational and interventional data in the absence of known ground-truth graph structures necessitates implicit latent causal representation learning. Implicit learning of causal mechanisms typically involves two categories of interventional data: hard and soft interventions. In real-world scenarios, soft interventions are often more realistic than hard interventions, as the latter require fully controlled environments. Unlike hard interventions, which directly force changes in a causal variable, soft interventions exert influence indirectly by affecting the causal mechanism. However, the subtlety of soft interventions impose several challenges for learning causal models. One challenge is that soft intervention's effects are ambiguous, since parental relations remain intact. In this paper, we tackle the challenges of learning causal models using soft interventions while retaining implicit modeling. We propose ICLR-SM, which models the effects of soft interventions by employing a causal mechanism switch variable designed to toggle between different causal mechanisms. In our experiments, we consistently observe improved learning of identifiable, causal representations, compared to baseline approaches. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.
