As an emerging computing paradigm of information processing, Granular computing exhibits great potential in human-centric decision problems such as feature selection and feature extraction, pattern recognition and knowledge discovery. Optimization plays an important role in these areas. The optimization problems arising in Granular computing area are called granular optimization problems in which information granules are treated as information processing units and therefore granules denote the related solutions. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) has been demonstrated to be a very competitive algorithm in solving global optimization problems. In this paper, we develop a novel PSO variant called granular PSO to solve problems of granular optimization. Each granule in this study is expressed as a multi-dimension hyper-box with each coordinate being described by an interval. In the proposed granular PSO, the velocity and position of a particle is represented by intervals rather than single numerical values. The velocity and position update strategy is modified accordingly. In granular PSO, the solution space search behavior of a particle is realized in granule-to-granule manner rather than point-to-point format. We provide experimental simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed granular PSO algorithm.

DIBCO 2013 is the international Document Image Binarization Contest organized in the context of ICDAR 2013 conference. The general objective of the contest is to identify current advances in document image binarization for both machine-printed and handwritten document images using evaluation performance measures that conform to document image analysis and recognition. This paper describes the contest details including the evaluation measures used as well as the performance of the 23 submitted methods along with a short description of each method.

Recently, data center carbon emission has become an emerging concern for the cloud service providers. Previous works are limited on cutting down the power consumption of the data centers to defuse such a concern. In this paper, we show how the spatial and temporal variabilities of the electricity carbon footprint can be fully exploited to further green the cloud running on top of geographically distributed data centers. We jointly consider the electricity cost, service level agreement (SLA) requirement, and emission reduction budget. To navigate such a three-way tradeoff, we take advantage of Lyapunov optimization techniques to design and analyze a carbon-aware control framework, which makes online decisions on geographical load balancing, capacity right-sizing, and server speed scaling. Results from rigorous mathematical analyses and real-world trace-driven empirical evaluation demonstrate its effectiveness in both minimizing electricity cost and reducing carbon emission.

The 3 rd Generation Partnership Project - Long Term Evolution (3GPP-LTE) is the best choice for multimedia data transmission in demanding situation. The 3GPP LTE provides high data transmission rate between the User Equipment (UE) and Evolved Node B (eNB) with lower latency and better throughput. However, with the advancement and increasing traffic of data load, it is necessary to have data scheduling with user requests. In real life situations, mobile users become impatient when they don't receive their desired data. Moreover, the LTE Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) does not provide any type of scheduling to measure and manage the impatient user request in multimedia broadcasting scenario. So, we consider this situation in our proposed scheme and simulated a new type of hybrid scheduling scheme to overcome this problem. It also takes care of the server anomalies arising from multiple requests sent by the same user for the same data.

A recent focus in itemset mining has been the discovery of frequent itemsets from high-dimensional datasets. With exponentially increasing running time as average row length increases, mining such datasets renders most conventional algorithms impractical. Unfortunately, large cardinality itemsets are likely to be more informative than small cardinality itemsets in this type of dataset. This paper proposes an approach, termed DisClose, to extract large cardinality (colossal) closed itemsets from high-dimensional datasets. The approach relies on a Compact Row-Tree data structure to represent itemsets during the search process. Large cardinality itemsets are enumerated first followed by smaller ones. In addition, we utilize a minimum cardinality threshold to further reduce the search space. Experimental results show that DisClose can achieve extraction of colossal closed itemsets in the discovered datasets, even for low support thresholds. The algorithm immediately discovers closed itemsets without needing to check if each new closed itemset has previously been found. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Ships that operate in polar regions continue to face the threat of floating ice sheets and icebergs generated from an ice ablation process. systems have been implemented to track these threats, with varying degrees of success. In this paper, a definition is proposed for this tracking problem that re-casts it within a class of robotic, multiagent target observation problems. The focus in this new definition is on minimizing the time an initial contact for newly generated targets is obtained, as opposed to obtaining a contact long after a target has been generated. Focusing on the initial contact time provides for the ability to enact early countermeasures. A model is provided for the target sources, as well as metrics for computing costs associated with the model for reallocating robotic agents during an observation task. The effectiveness of the solution compared with an existing observation technique is demonstrated using simulation.

Ultrasonic motors used in high-precision mechatronics are characterized by strong frictional effects, which are among the main problems in precision motion control. The traditional methods apply model-based nonlinear feedforward to compensate the friction, thus requiring closed-loop stability and safety constraint considerations. Implementation of these methods requires computation power. This paper introduces a systematic approach using piecewise affine models to emulate the friction effect of the motor motion. The well-known model predictive control method is employed to deal with piecewise affine models. The increased complexity of the model offers a higher tracking precision on a simpler gain scheduling scheme.

There is widespread interest in the deployment of fleets of marine robots with the potential to roam the oceans freely and collect data at an unprecedented scale. This calls for the development of efficient algorithms for multiple vehicle motion planning that can take directly into account the capabilities of each vehicle as well as the environmental conditions and lend themselves to seamless integration with control and navigation systems. The latter connection is for the most part eschewed in the literature, in spite of the obvious fact that in order for the vehicles to execute the planned motions they must at a later stage navigate with great accuracy and follow the trajectories using control algorithms that take explicitly into account the dynamical constraints of the vehicles involved. Among the methods available for underwater vehicle navigation, terrain-based techniques have recently come to the fore. These techniques avoid the use of overly expensive inertial-like motion sensor units and hold considerable promise for the development of a new breed of affordable long range navigation systems. Motivated by these considerations, we tackle in the present paper the problem of multiple vehicle motion planning by taking explicitly into consideration inter-vehicle collision avoidance, together with a number of criteria that may include simultaneous times of arrival at assigned target points, energy minimization, acoustic communication constraints, and the maximization of terrain information along the vehicle paths (as measured by some appropriate criterion) for terrain-based navigation purposes.

We consider deletion correcting codes over a q-ary alphabet. It is well known that any code capable of correcting s deletions can also correct any combination of s total insertions and deletions. To obtain asymptotic upper bounds on code size, we apply a packing argument to channels that perform different mixtures of insertions and deletions. Even though the set of codes is identical for all of these channels, the bounds that we obtain vary. Prior to this work, only the bounds corresponding to the all insertion case and the all deletion case were known. We recover these as special cases. The bound from the all deletion case, due to Levenshtein, has been the best known for more than forty five years. Our generalized bound is better than Levenshtein's bound whenever the number of deletions to be corrected is larger than the alphabet size.
