We discuss problems in the preparation and analysis of the solid solution phase in the case of heavily phosphorus and boron doped polycrystalline silicon. Some currently used methods and the technology of polysilicon thin films preparation are presented. Based on and afore these discussions, we propose a process of preparation of a good quality heavily boron and phosphorus doped silicon thin film samples. The characterisation, with some new methods of characterisations, and the investigation of the stability of such obtained samples are presented. It was also indicated that the problem of the determination of the current carrier concentration is not yet solved even in the heavily doped, metallic, regime in polysilicon.

We analyze the optimal location of underwater acoustic sensor nodes, with respect to the capacity of the wireless links between the nodes, in a multi-hop hierarchical tree structure based on the information each node has to transfer between underwater levels. A novel algorithm is proposed to calculate the optimal distances between sensor nodes for the proposed hierarchical network. Numerical results for different channel conditions; such as an ideal channel, an imperfect channel with a certain BER, and a channel with interference, are provided. In addition, our algorithm is used to obtain the optimal frequency for each level in the tree shaped network for the above-mentioned conditions.

Global output feedback stabilization for a class of nonlinear planar systems with output-dependent growth rates

In this paper, we consider the global output feedback stabilization problem for a class of nonlinear planar systems under a more general growth condition. The nonlinearities in such a system are bounded by both lower-order and higher-order terms with an output-dependent growth rate. This problem is solved by integrating the feedback domination technique and a novel dual observer approach, where two individual observers are constructed in parallel with one estimating the linear part of the unmeasurable state and the other estimating the higher-order part. Moreover, the presented observers and the output feedback controller all have nonlinear gains. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed stabilization scheme.

A promising new application area for humanoid robots is in the area of assistive device testing. Humanoid robots can facilitate the experimental evaluation of assistive devices by providing repeatable, measurable, human-like motion while removing the difficulties and potential safety hazards associated with human trials. To ensure that the humanoid robot is providing a valid test platform, the robot must move in a similar way as a human while wearing the assistive device. This challenge is made difficult due to the inherent variability in human motion. In this paper, we propose an approach for a quantitative comparison between human and robot motion that identifies both the difference magnitude and the difference location, and explicitly handles both spatial and temporal variability of human motion. The proposed approach is demonstrated on data from robot gait and sagittal plane lifting.

Most underwater vehicles are controlled by human operators through tethered cables which inhibit range and affect the hydrodynamics. The overall performance of these promising vehicles would improve through the employment of higher levels of autonomy. Implementation of open source autonomous guidance software in an off the shelf underwater vehicle is explored here as a solution. Development and implementation of this autonomous guidance and vehicle control is greatly facilitated through the use of an accurate vehicle simulator. Running real world tests of an underwater vehicle is extremely time intensive and error prone. The analysis of the vehicle performance underwater is extremely challenging with limited accurate positioning sensing e.g. GPS. A vehicle simulator allows for faster development of the system by providing vehicle performance information prior to expensive real world missions. This research presents a method for simulation and testing of autonomous guidance and control in a vehicle accurate simulator for the VideoRay Pro III underwater vehicle and demonstrates the capability through simulated examples and analysis.

This paper presents a novel approach to rapid, high power, high voltage capacitor charger that is fed from low voltage input source and achieves high efficiency in small dimensions. The charger is based on parallel resonant push-pull topology. Output current of the proposed charger is shown to be approximately constant regardless of the rising output voltage. The charged capacitor is fed by a linearly rising power profile. The behavior differs from series resonant and flyback charger topologies where output capacitor is fed by linearly decaying and constant power, respectively. The parallel resonant topology enables charging from a low voltage source using a relatively low transformer winding ratio, in one stage. The proposed charger is controlled by the digital controller dsPIC33FJ16GS502 (Microchip USA). Zero current soft switching is performed using a varying switching frequency based on continuous controller calculations during charging. Feasibility of the proposed charger and its control were tested experimentally on a prototype charger, which was operated at 0.7kW from a low input voltage source of 28V. The charger was loaded by an output capacitor of 250nF, which was charged at the rate of 600 charging cycles per second to 3kV. Good agreement was found between the proposed analytical model and experimental results.

This paper focuses on energy management for a large population of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) for demand response applications. We consider both real time charging control as well as energy planning optimizations. The main contribution of the paper lies in the development of a novel dynamic energy capacity model in which the energy variation range of the aggregated loads available at each time step is a function of the past energy management decisions. Such a model enables systematic yet simple design of planning strategies that minimize energy costs while respecting the dynamic energy shifting capacity of the load aggregation. A further contribution is on the development of a novel stochastic hybrid system model that can fully characterizes the dynamics and stochasticity of individual charging demands for real time implementation of the planning decisions. Simulation results show that the proposed energy capacity model closely captures the capabilities of the real system. Additionally, we show how the model could be used to achieve a specific objective: minimization of daily energy costs.

A new blind Detection algorithm based on simplified fourth order cumulant matrices is presented and applied to the multi-user symbol estimation problem in Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) systems. The blind detection is to estimate multiple symbol sequences associated with all users in the downlink of DS-CDMA communication system using only the received wireless data and without any knowledge of the user spreading codes. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of higher cumulant matrix properties to reduce computational load and enhance performance. Bit error rate (BER) simulations of this algorithm are shown for different number of users, signal to noise ratio (SNR) and different number of symbols per user in comparison with the FAST ICA algorithm and Robust ICA. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the both ICA-Detectors in estimating the symbol signals from the mixed CDMA received signals.

With the rapid growing of users in the SNS environments, their network relationships in Internet have become as complex as in the real world. On the other hand, the user's social role plays an important role in providing individualized services, such as information recommendation in the SNS environments. However, as we know, people will switch or change their social roles dynamically in the real society, which is also true in the cyber network space, such as SNS. In this paper, we present a basic model to describe social roles in both the real world and the SNS environment, in which a set of attributes and factors are considered and introduced to represent the time-changing social roles in different situations and contexts. The mechanism that we develop to identify the roles is twofold: mapping of real world situations to cyber space, and analyzing social role attributes based on the mapping and synthesizing. We further describe an application scenario in regard to how to map the different situations and analyze the role attributes, in order to dynamically identify roles in the cyber space.
