The videoscope (VS) images have poor quality and low contrast. Hence, in this paper, three proposed frameworks to improve the quality of VS images are presented. The first framework depends on contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) with adaptive gamma correction. The second framework depends on homomorphic processing. The third framework is based on the homomorphic enhancement with histogram equalization. The first one is superior from the entropy perspective, while the third one is superior from the contrast perspective. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a toxic gas that can cause respiratory problems, and sensing its presence is crucial for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. This investigation presents a novel approach towards sensing NO₂ gas by utilizing partially completed/recycled silicon solar cells employing a metal-assisted etching process to fabricate a high-performance p-black-silicon based sensor. Structural and morphological analyses using X-ray diffraction patterns, Raman spectroscopy and cross sectional FESEM characterization confirm the integrity of the p-B-silicon sensor. By combining recycling techniques with advanced fabrication methods, the resulting sensor exhibits exceptional sensitivity, a low detection limit of 1 ppm, and rapid response times (12-14 s) when exposed to NO₂ gas concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 ppm. The enhanced sensitivity is attributed to the unique nanostructured comb-like morphology of the sensor material, which facilitates fast charge transport mechanisms, and a plausible sensing mechanism has been proposed and explained using a depletion model diagram and energy model diagram. This eco-friendly and cost-effective solution not only addresses electronic waste concerns but also highlights the potential of sustainable practices in scientific research. The findings emphasize on the importance of environmental consciousness and innovation, showcasing a promising future for gas sensing technology. By utilizing recycled materials and advanced fabrication techniques, this study contributes to the development of efficient, eco-friendly sensors for environmental monitoring applications, paving the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced future in the field of gas sensors. © 2025 RSC.

Monitoring chloride levels in water is essential for environmental health, industrial processes, and safe drinking water, as both high and low concentrations can cause harm for living being. This paper presents a novel approach to detecting chloride concentrations using Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (OECP) sensing combined with machine learning algorithms. OECP sensing offers real-time, non-destructive, and precise monitoring, enabling early detection of contaminants. Scattering parameter (S11) data across a broad frequency range was collected with varying chloride concentrations in controlled laboratory experiments. Thirteen machine learning algorithms were trained to predict chloride concentrations, with different datasets for training and testing to ensure robustness. Among these, CatBoost demonstrated the best performance. After fine tuning and cross-validation, the CatBoost model achieved a test Mean Square Error (MSE) of 0.00627 and Coefficient of Determination (R2) of 0.9936, showcasing its accuracy for applications in water monitoring, corrosion prevention, and safeguarding public health. © 2025 IEEE.

Within the paradigm of Evolving and Adaptive Intelligent systems, the electrical Power System (EPS) represents a Critical Infrastructure demanding robust reliability metrics. This study pioneers the application of Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) heuristic to the Optimal Switch Allocation (OSA) problem in the EPS. Adapting neighborhood structures and local search methods, we consider the joint allocation of Manual Switches and Remote-Controlled switches, addressing interdependencies. Results highlight VNS efficacy in navigating OSA challenges, showcasing its adaptability in an evolving system. Comparative analyses endorse VNS as a valuable tool for addressing EPS reliability within the dynamic landscape of evolving and adaptive intelligent systems.

Towards Explainable Goal Recognition Using Weight of Evidence (WoE): A Human-Centered Approach

Goal recognition (GR) involves inferring an agent’s unobserved goal from a sequence of observations. This is a critical problem in AI with diverse applications. Traditionally, GR has been addressed using’inference to the best explanation’ or abduction, where hypotheses about the agent’s goals are generated as the most plausible explanations for observed behavior. Alternatively, some approaches enhance interpretability by ensuring that an agent’s behavior aligns with an observer’s expectations or by making the reasoning behind decisions more transparent. In this work, we tackle a different challenge: explaining the GR process in a way that is comprehensible to humans. We introduce and evaluate an explainable model for goal recognition (GR) agents, grounded in the theoretical framework and cognitive processes underlying human behavior explanation. Drawing on insights from two human-agent studies, we propose a conceptual framework for human-centered explanations of GR. Using this framework, we develop the eXplainable Goal Recognition (XGR) model, which generates explanations for both why and why not questions. We evaluate the model computationally across eight GR benchmarks and through three user studies. The first study assesses the efficiency of generating human-like explanations within the Sokoban game domain, the second examines perceived explainability in the same domain, and the third evaluates the model’s effectiveness in aiding decision-making in illegal fishing detection. Results demonstrate that the XGR model significantly enhances user understanding, trust, and decision-making compared to baseline models, underscoring its potential to improve human-agent collaboration. The key goals in learning Bayesian networks (BNs) from data are to identify significant statistical relationships between variables and to build a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) that represents these relationships through Joint Probability Distributions. Most research relies on score-based or conditional test methods for model selection. However, when using real-world data, it can be challenging to identify whether the learned DAG represents the underlying relations inherent in the limited datasets, particularly when evaluating data obtained from multiple independent sources. This study presents a methodology to assess the credible interval for both the existence and direction of each edge within Bayesian networks derived from data. Furthermore, it explores the fusion of models acquired from distinct and independent datasets. This approach enables the Bayesian learning of Bayesian Networks (BNs) from data by treating the uncertainty associated with the existence and orientation of each edge as a random variable. By evaluating the probability of the orientation of each edge, it is possible to suggest the existence of a potential latent variable within the dataset. If an edge exhibits equiprobable directions and is verified to exist, it becomes a plausible hypothesis for a latent variable. The Fast Causal Algorithm, originally introduced by [1], is the foundation of this approach. Finally, by employing a maximum a posteriori estimation, the most prominent edges and their respective orientations are identified and employed to create the leading DAG. We present our findings in simulated datasets with different length sizes. By comparing the structure of the learned DAGs with existing structures and evaluating the inference capabilities of the final BN, we establish that our approach achieves results comparable to the most recent studies in the field, while offering insights into the model’s reliability and improving the use of the data.

Switching performance analysis in this paper presents how Horizontal Current Bipolar Transistor (HCBT) performs under switching mode of operation compared to other commercially available bipolar and MOS transistors, focusing mainly on power efficiency. Rudimentary measurement setup is devised, with target frequency spectrum for this analysis up to 100 MHz. Measurements were performed at frequencies of 1 MHz, 10 MHz and 100 MHz. Signal waveforms were measured at the input and output of analysed device. Dissipated power at each component of test circuit was calculated from the measurements to determine efficiency. The results show similar performance among RF bipolar junction transistors analysed in this paper. All bipolar transistors exhibit efficiency around 80% at 100 MHz, whereas the best performing MOSFET has n = 54.31%. The analysed MOSFETs show somewhat better performance comparing to bipolar transistors at lower frequencies, but with larger performance degradation with the frequency increase. This analysis shows potential of HCBT to be used in switching part of Envelope Tracking (ET), hybrid power supply modulation, pulse width modulation (PWM) or multilevel power supply switching to obtain higher efficiencies. Most of the efficiency reduction is caused by nonideal input signal. © 2021 Croatian Society MIPRO.

Light behaviours in disordered materials have been of research interest primarily at length scales beyond or comparable to the wavelength of light, because order and disorder are often believed to be almost indistinguishable in the subwavelength regime according to effective medium theory (EMT). However, it was recently demonstrated that the breakdown of EMT occurs even at deep-subwavelength scales when interface phenomena, such as the Goos-Hänchen effect, dominate light flows. Here we develop the engineering of disordered multilayers at deep-subwavelength scales to achieve angle-selective manipulation of wave localization. To examine the disorder-dependent EMT breakdown, we classify the intermediate regime of microstructural phases between deep-subwavelength crystals and uncorrelated disorder through the concept of stealthy hyperuniformity (SHU). In this classification, we devise nontrivial order-to-disorder transitions by selectively tailoring the short-range and long-range order in SHU multilayers, achieving angle-selective control of wave localization. The result paves the way to the realization of deep-subwavelength disordered metamaterials, bridging the gap between the fields of disordered photonics and metamaterials. © 2024, CC BY.
