Increasingly available ultrastructural data from a continuously growing diversity of experimental conditions are driving new opportunities for fruitful neuroscientific hypotheses tested in intracellular compartments such as the nanoscale roles of, e.g., the mitochondria. Reliable morphological statistics are based on achieving highly accurate semantic segmentations of EM images. The state-of-the-art deep CNNs can be somewhat brittle;they tend to provide coarse and high-frequency-oscillatory solutions with discontinuities and false positives even for simple mitochondria segmentation. Historically, the current state-of-the-art in medical image segmentation would involve some variant of the encoder-decoder architecture, such as the U-Net architecture. The SAM does not perform as well, since it has not been explicitly trained for the task and does not demonstrate user-interactive, over one billion annotations mostly for natural images. However, the SAM may be applied to segment anything, including medical image segmentation challenging new datasets. This work is aimed at the difficult task of implementing domain adaptation in mitochondria segmentation within EM images obtained from various tissues and species, using deep learning. We do a systematic study to assess SAM's ability to perform segmentation in medical images, measure its performance on volumetric EM datasets, and show that it is powerful at segmenting instances even under challenging imaging conditions. We provide a fine-tuning SAM which can be naturally trained by SAM at an exemplary scale, benefiting from a diverse and large dataset over one million image masks in 11 modalities. This model would be able to perform precise segmentation for a wide range of targets under various imaging conditions, at the level of performance of specialized U-Net models, or even better. Exoplanet Detection via Differentiable Rendering

Direct imaging of exoplanets is crucial for advancing our understanding of planetary systems beyond our solar system, but it faces significant challenges due to the high contrast between host stars and their planets. Wavefront aberrations introduce speckles in the telescope science images, which are patterns of diffracted starlight that can mimic the appearance of planets, complicating the detection of faint exoplanet signals. Traditional post-processing methods, operating primarily in the image intensity domain, do not integrate wavefront sensing data. These data, measured mainly for adaptive optics corrections, have been overlooked as a potential resource for post-processing, partly due to the challenge of the evolving nature of wavefront aberrations. In this paper, we present a differentiable rendering approach that leverages these wavefront sensing data to improve exoplanet detection. Our differentiable renderer models wave-based light propagation through a coronagraphic telescope system, allowing gradient-based optimization to significantly improve starlight subtraction and increase sensitivity to faint exoplanets. Simulation experiments based on the James Webb Space Telescope configuration demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, achieving substantial improvements in contrast and planet detection limits. Our results showcase how the computational advancements enabled by differentiable rendering can revitalize previously underexploited wavefront data, opening new avenues for enhancing exoplanet imaging and characterization. © 2025, CC BY.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has emerged as a crucial cornerstone within the realm of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, with its significance notably pronounced in the field of fatigue detection. However, the inherent limitations of EEG acquisition equipment during real driving scenarios have contributed to the constrained robustness of existing models. Moreover, most of recent methods failed to extract robust multi-domain features, leading to a suboptimal performance. To address these challenges, we propose a novel channel-augmented multi-domain graph convolutional network (CA-MDGCNet). Specifically, the initial EEG signals are enriched by incorporating supplementary virtual EEG channels, distinguished as learnable parameters within the network architecture. Then, differential entropy features are extracted from the augmented EEG signals. Following this, a multi-domain graph convolutional network is designed to encode high-level EEG features by means of convolutions in diverse paths, which is beneficial to integrating the characteristics extracted from multiple domains. Finally, the classification block derives the detection outcome from the refined feature maps. To substantiate the potency of the proposed method, the validation was conducted on the publicly accessible SEED-VIG. The proposed CA-MDGCNet not only demonstrates more promising performance compared to state-of-the-art approaches but also underscores the potential viability of our method for the realm of fatigue driving detection.

While the fifth generation (5G) of wireless networks is currently being rolled out, wireless networks still need further development to meet the requirements of dramatically increasing numbers of users and new applications and the resulting traffic expected in the coming decade and beyond. The sixth generation (6G) of wireless networks is envisioned to respond to this by providing services with massive access, ultra-reliability, low latency, intelligence, and security while maximizing the spectral/energy/cost efficiency. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted considerable research attention due to their mobility and ability to line-of-sight (LoS) coverage in areas that suffer from low channel quality. However, how to characterize a UAV’s coverage area is a challenging problem and has not been thoroughly studied. To address this issue, in this paper we investigate the coverage performance of base station (BS) to UAV communications with a number of interfering mobile users. We first establish a Nakagami-m fading channel model for BS-toUAV wireless communications. Then, we derive a closed-form expression for the UAV’s average coverage probability under the scenario of interfering mobile users. Finally, numerical results confirm our derived analytical results and evaluate the UAV’s performance under different scenarios that anticipate 6G wireless networking models.

On Improved Commutation for Moving-Magnet Planar Actuators

The demand for high-precision and high-throughput motion control systems has increased significantly in recent years. The use of moving-magnet planar actuators (MMPAs) is gaining popularity due to their advantageous characteristics, such as complete environmental decoupling and reduction of stage mass. Nonetheless, model-based commutation techniques for MMPAs are compromised by misalignment between the mover and coil array and mismatch between the ideal electromagnetic model and the physical system, often leading to decreased system performance. To address this issue, a novel improved commutation approach is proposed in this paper, which is applicable for general planar motor applications, by means of dynamic regulation of the position dependence of the ideal model-based commutation algorithm, which allows for attenuation of magnetic misalignment, manufacturing inaccuracies and other unmodelled phenomena. Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that RF predicts diabetes with 6% more accuracy on average compared to LR.

With the rapid advances in computer vision, human action recognition has gradually received attention, but the current methods still exhibit some problems in indoor environments. The human skeleton, as the framework of human motion, contains high-quality actional feature information, and the skeleton-based action recognition method effectively avoid the interference of interior background noise and has advantages in indoor action recognition. The outstanding effect of graph convolutional networks on graph structure data processing has led to its rapid development and wide application in skeleton-based action recognition. Second-order skeletal information also contains a large number of actional features but is not effectively utilized. The artificial predefined topology of the human skeleton map has limitations, and cannot reflect the interaction between limbs. To solve the above problems, this article designs an adaptive weighted multi-stream graph convolutional network (AM-GCN) based on skeletal information, using an attention mechanism to enhance the network's ability to extract actional features, and an adaptive layer to make the construction graph more flexible, incorporating second-order skeletal features through a dual-stream architecture. In this article, the NTU-RGB+D dataset has been used for the experiments, the results show that the method in this article has good results. © 2023 IEEE.

Growing demands in today’s industry results in increasingly stringent performance and throughput specifications. For accurate positioning of high-precision motion systems, feedforward control plays a crucial role. Nonetheless, conventional model-based feedforward approaches are no longer sufficient to satisfy the challenging performance requirements. An attractive method for systems with repetitive motion tasks is iterative learning control (ILC) due to its superior performance. However, for systems with non-repetitive motion tasks, ILC is generally not applicable, despite of some recent promising advances. In this paper, we aim to explore the use of deep learning to address the task flexibility constraint of ILC. For this purpose, a novel Task Analogy based Imitation Learning (TAIL)-ILC approach is developed. To benchmark the performance of the proposed approach, a simulation study is presented which compares the TAIL-ILC to classical model-based feedforward strategies and existing learning-based approaches, such as neural network based feedforward learning.

In-situ workflows have emerged as an attractive approach for addressing data movement challenges at very large scales. Since GPU-based architectures dominate the HPC landscapes, porting these in-situ workflows, and, specifically, the inter-application data exchange, to GPU-based systems can be challenging. Technologies such as GPUDirect RDMA (GDR), which is typically used for I/O in GPU applications as an optimization that circumvents the CPU overhead, can be leveraged to support bulk data exchanges between GPU applications. However, current GDR design often lacks performance portability across HPC clusters built with different hardware configurations. Furthermore, the local CPU may also be effectively used as an auxiliary communication mechanism to offload data exchanges. In this paper, we present a dual channel dual staging approach for efficient, scalable, and performance-portable inter-application data exchange for in-situ workflows. This approach exploits the data access pattern within in-situ workflows along with the inherent execution asynchrony to accelerate data exchanges and, at the same time, improve performance portability. Specifically, the dual channel dual staging method leverages both the local CPU and the remote data staging server to build a hierarchical joint staging area and uses this staging area to transform blocking inter-application bulk data exchanges into best-effort local data movements between GPU and CPU. The dual channel dual staging is implemented as a portability extension of the Dataspaces-GPU staging framework. We present an experimental evaluation of its performance, portability, and scalability using this implementation on three leadership GPU clusters. The evaluation results demonstrate that the dual channel dual staging method saves up to 75% in data-exchange time compared to host-based, GDR, and alternate portable designs, while maintaining scalability (up to 512 GPUs) and performance portability across the three platforms.
