Fault Location Method for Overhead Feeders with Distributed Generation Units Based on Direct Load Flow Approach

This paper proposes a novel fault location method for overhead feeders,which is based on the direct load flow *** method is developed in the phase domain to effectively deal with unbalanced network conditions,while it can also handle any type of distributed generation(DG)units without requiring equivalent *** utilizing the line series parameters and synchronized or unsynchronized voltage and current phasor measurements taken from the sources,the method reliably identifies the most probable faulty *** the aid of an index,the exact faulty section among the multiple candidates is *** simulation studies for the IEEE 123-bus test feeder demonstrate that the proposed method accu-rately estimates the fault position under numerous short-circuit conditions with varying prefault system loading conditions,fault resistances,and measurement *** proposed method is promising for practical applications due to the limited number of required measurement devices as well as the short computation time.

Investigation of Compressive Sensing and Machine Learning Techniques for Classification of Incipient Discharges in Transformer Insulation

Present study deals with the acquisition and analysis of different types of incipient discharges in transformer by adopting Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) technique. The Nyquist rate sampling method generates a large number of samples, making it inefficient for developing an online monitoring system. To reduce this, compressive sensing techniques are employed for signal compression and reconstruction. Various compressive sensing methods, including Convex, Non-Convex, Greedy, and Iterative Thresholding, were compared. Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) was found to be the optimal algorithm, achieving optimal reconstruction time and error at a compression ratio of 45%. The reconstructed signals were compared with the originals using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), revealing similarities in dominant frequencies. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) machine learning model was used for signal classification, consistently outperforming other algorithms. This study enhances understanding of incipient/partial discharge detection and classification, highlighting the effectiveness of innovative signal processing and machine learning approaches in power system engineering. © (2024), (International Hellenic University - School of Science). This work investigates discrepancies in parameters and performance between an induction machine design simulation and the produced unit. The squirrel cage motor is explored analytically and in finite element space based on the complete design blueprints and material properties. The built motor is subjected to the DC, no-load, locked-rotor, and load tests. The simulated model is created parametric, according to the manufacturing process and tolerances. Solution space search results indicate that performance and parameters can deviate with minor structural changes. Reliable simulation prior to production can greatly reduce production time and cost, while improving performance and allowing for optimization. The resulting approach will be used as a basis for a manufacturing digital twin in further collaboration. © 2024 IEEE.

In the evolving landscape of precision agriculture, the integration of remote pest traps with deep learning technologies marks a critical step forward in remote pest detection, with the potential to substantially improve traditional pest monitoring methods. This article provides a comprehensive review of the developments, challenges, and innovative solutions in creating sensor-based electronic traps and applying deep learning for efficient and autonomous pest identification. By addressing the complexities of sensor integration, data collection, and the need for adaptive algorithms capable of classifying a wide range of insect pests, this review highlights the effective combination of electronic trap advancements with the precision offered by convolutional neural networks. An in-depth analysis of the technological advancements in electronic pest trap development is presented, highlighting improvements in design, efficiency, and sustainability while referring to ongoing and future challenges. Moreover, this article explores deep learning techniques, emphasizing on dataset enhancement and model optimization to overcome traditional challenges such as data scarcity and to improve the robustness of pest detection models. A thorough evaluation of various trap types against 85 unique pests is conducted, with the delta trap emerging as the most versatile, showcasing compatibility with multiple sensors and effectiveness against various pests. This review equips researchers, practitioners, and agricultural developers with critical insights and methodologies that can significantly enhance pest monitoring efficiency, reduce pesticide usage, and support sustainable agricultural practices. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a voltage control method for active distribution systems based on the coordinated operation of on-load-tap-changers (OLTCs) and distributed energy resources (DERs). Primarily, DERs are assigned to control local voltage when overvoltage/undervoltage conditions appear in the system. DER control actions are initiated based on predetermined local voltage criteria and they result in properly changing the active and/or reactive power output of DERs. In case DER control is not adequate to keep voltages within the acceptable operation limits, the LTCs of the MV/LV power transformers are properly controlled to restore local voltages. As a tertiary measure, the LTC of the main substation power transformer regulates the voltage to keep network voltages within permissible limits. Coordination between local voltage control actions is guaranteed with appropriate selection of thresholds. Several scenarios considering hourly time-varying load demand and variable electricity production from DERs are simulated. The proposed voltage control method is tested against several scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently controls voltage in active distribution systems. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Improving performance of deep learning models for 3D point cloud semantic segmentation via attention mechanisms

3D Semantic segmentation is a key element for a variety of applications in robotics and autonomous vehicles. For such applications, 3D data are usually acquired by LiDAR sensors resulting in a point cloud, which is a set of points characterized by its unstructured form and inherent sparsity. For the task of 3D semantic segmentation where the corresponding point clouds should be labeled with semantics, the current tendency is the use of deep learning neural network architectures for effective representation learning. On the other hand, various 2D and 3D computer vision tasks have used attention mechanisms which result in an effective re-weighting of the already learned features. In this work, we aim to investigate the role of attention mechanisms for the task of 3D semantic segmentation for autonomous driving, by identifying the significance of different attention mechanisms when adopted in existing deep learning networks. Our study is further supported by an extensive experimentation on two standard datasets for autonomous driving, namely Street3D and SemanticKITTI, that permit to draw conclusions at both a quantitative and qualitative level. Our experimental findings show that there is a clear advantage when attention mechanisms have been adopted, resulting in a superior performance. In particular, we show that the adoption of a Point Transformer in a SPVCNN network, results in an architecture which outperforms the state of the art on the Street3D dataset. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

This paper proposes a kit for the detection of unintentional islanding, neutral conductor loss and meter tampering (i.e., electricity or power theft) events, applicable to low voltage electrical installations, in the prospect of mass penetration of distributed generation and energy storage units in buildings. A simple, compact and flexible technical solution is studied, by utilizing a low-power H-bridge inverter and a current transformer, along with voltage and current sensing. Moreover, the kit is compatible with TN/TT distribution networks, it is self-powered, whereas it features advanced IoT communication capabilities (by the aid of the ESP32 microcontroller), facilitating its connectivity with various smart home devices. The detection is based on the injection of a zero-sequence voltage harmonic component, in series with the electrical grid voltage and the measurement of the corresponding harmonic current. The theoretical analysis of the detection kit is presented;its functionality and effectiveness are validated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations. Finally, the design process of a hardware prototype is presented and discussed, whereas indicative experimental results highlight its functionality and good performance. © 2023 IEEE.

In the work at hand we present the design procedure of a waveguide beamformer network that implements the Direct Radiating Arrays' Overlapping Function. Such a design is notorious for its complexity and challenge since it should deliver wideband, dual polarization overlapped feeding to planar antenna arrays. Such a feeding network is to be viewed as a building block that would tile the background, on top of which the fed sub-array antenna elements would respectively tile the radiating aperture host area. Thus, each feeding network should provide ports on the lower face, (input feeding ports), the upper face, (input to antenna elements), but also to the side faces to provide overlapping. Here, utilizing transmission matrix factorization, the beamformer is designed as a cascade connection of elementary components, hybrids and phase shifters. The 3d actual implementation of the multiport network in a rectangular waveguide technology, supporting both polarizations, is indeed challenging. In the current work such a device is presented and its merit is demonstrated. © 2024 IEEE.

Parametric investigation and multi-objective optimization of building-integrated hybrid energy storage system with metal hydride tank

The present analysis investigates a hybrid energy storage system consisting of lead-acid batteries and a hydrogen storage tank using metal hydrides. A dynamic simulation is conducted for a 1000 m2 building, supported by photovoltaics and a hybrid storage system to meet annual appliance and lighting demands. The research focuses on optimal system sizing to minimize both grid electricity demand and total capital costs. Multi-objective optimization was conducted through a Dymola–Python NSGA-II algorithm interface, while energy simulations utilized the *** tool. Results indicate an optimal solution with 118 lead-acid batteries (339.84 kWh) and a 4 kg H2 capacity of a metal hydride storage tank, achieving 99.2 % grid autonomy. Although the 40 kW and 50 kW PV systems achieve comparable energy autonomy (98 %), their total cost is doubled compared to the optimal solution due to increased demanded MH tank capacity (60 kg H2) to support the battery system, outperforming the total cost. © 2025 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC
