We used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to reconstruct the electromagnetic imaging of a perfect conductor in half-space through the traverse magnetic wave. Since the conventional iterative algorithm is time-consuming, we developed a real-time electromagnetic imaging technique to apply to the CNN to reconstruct the half-space conducting cylinders. The sizes and positions of the cylinders were calculated through the Direct Sampling Method (DSM) in the scattered field. The original ground truth was fed to CNN for training to predict accurate sizes and positions of the shape. The accurate size and position of the shape for the perfect conductor were reconstructed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes an on-line remedial action scheme (OLRAS) in order to mitigate the voltage violations caused by false data injection attacks (FDIAs) targeting under load tap changing (ULTC) transformers in smart distribution systems. The FDIA framework contains two different phases. In the attack phase, distribution system operator (DSO), being in attacker's shoe, considers cyberattack scenarios through compromising the results of volt-var optimization problem in a radial distribution grid modified with distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaic (PV) units and wind turbines (WTs). The outcome of the attack phase will be the compromised voltage profile of the distribution grid showing different rates of voltage violations. In the reaction phase, the DSO rapidly identifies a customized distribution feeder reconfiguration (CDFR) in order to update the flows of active and reactive power throughout the targeted distribution system and recover the voltage profile. The objective functions of the proposed CDFR are defined to minimize the impacts of such cyberattacks targeting ULTCs within distribution grids. This will empower DSOs to react to severe cyberattacks, bypassing the detection stage, and address the voltage violations in a timely manner. The effectiveness of the proposed OLRAS is validated on an IEEE test system. © 2024 IEEE.

This letter presents a novel method to enable beam steering optimization for secure communications and resilience against radio tracking in an intelligent reflecting surfaces-enabled multiple-input multiple-output dual-functional radar and communications system. The approach involves optimizing beam steering by solving two convex sub-problems: i) maximizing secrecy rate and ii) maximizing legitimate receiver rate, solved using Taylor series approximation. Evaluation results demonstrate that optimizing radar and beam steering enhances secure communications while maintaining quality of service. Furthermore, the utilization of IRS effectively prevents passive eavesdropping in both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS scenarios. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents progress in the development of a virtual commissioning environment for the validation of intelligent mechatronic systems with the following properties: 1) decentralised control architecture without a master controller, 2) open programmability based on the IEC 61499 standard, and 3) heterogeneous wired/wireless communication architecture. The presented environment is capable of instantiating in the cloud images of distributed control nodes connected to each other and with a plant simulation model. The environment aims to facilitate the verification of functional and non-functional requirements for complex automation systems composed of autonomous collaborating units. © 2024 IEEE.

Swallowing is a pivotal physiological function for human sustenance and hydration. Dysfunctions, termed dysphagia, necessitate prompt and precise diagnosis. Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) remain the gold standard for swallowing assessment but pose accessibility and radiation exposure concerns. High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA) presents a non-invasive alternative with comparable accuracy. Yet, existing studies have only assessed HRCA in tandem with VFSS, without applying it to clinical settings. We propose an AI-enhanced PC software deploying HRCA for real-time bedside swallowing screening. This software proficiently detects abnormalities and precisely measures key kinematic events, including upper esophageal sphincter opening and laryngeal vestibule closure duration. The system was evaluated through two studies, encompassing a VFSS comparative analysis and a usability study. Our findings underscored the software's superior operational efficiency and diagnostic accuracy, positioning our HRCA-based system as a refined and pragmatic alternative for dysphagia assessment. © 2024 IEEE.

Spacecraft potential effects on low-energy ion measurements to be made by probe B1 of Comet Interceptor

Spacecraft charging causes notorious issues for low-energy plasma measurements. The charged particles are accelerated towards or repelled from the spacecraft surface, affecting both their energy and travel direction. The latter results in a distortion of the effective field of view (FOV) of the instrument making the measurements. The Comet Interceptor mission, planned to be launched in 2029, will make a flyby of a long-period or interstellar comet that ideally is dynamically new. The mission comprises one main spacecraft A, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), and two sub-probes B1 and B2, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and ESA, respectively. The low-energy plasma measurements made by Comet Interceptor will likely be affected by the spacecraft potential in the case of low relative flyby velocities. On probe B1, the Cometary Ion Mass Spectrometer (CIMS) of the Plasma Suite is an ion mass spectrometer, capable of measuring ions with energies down to 10 eV/q. In this work, we use the Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software to study the influence of the spacecraft potential on the low-energy ion measurements to be made by CIMS in the inner cometary magnetosphere. The results show that the effective FOV of CIMS is distorted at low energies when the flyby velocity is low. The distortion level is highly geometry dependent, and the largest distortions are caused by the magnetometer boom. Furthermore, the results show that cold ions with bulk velocities in the range 1-10 km s-1, flowing both radially away from and inward towards the nucleus, are detectable by the instrument considering the nominal observation geometry. © 2024 The Author(s).

This paper presents the design of a standalone hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) for a hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, USA, to enhance energy reliability and reduce costs. The proposed system integrates photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, batteries, and a backup diesel generator. Using Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software, the system is optimized for cost-effectiveness and sustainability, while electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) software is employed to ensure a safe operation under varying conditions. Results verify that the developed HRES meets the hospital's energy needs, significantly reduces operational costs, and minimizes carbon emissions, offering a sustainable model for healthcare facilities. © 2024 IEEE.

The great challenges faced by modern power systems require a fresh look at the conventional operation paradigm. The significant challenges faced by modern power systems require an innovative method for the conventional operation paradigm. We claim that the decarbonization of the power grid and extensive electrification of numerous sectors of human activity can only be fostered by a self-adaptable and smart power grid that manifests similar qualities to those of the Internet. The Internet is constructed on a layered architecture that facilitates technology innovations and its intelligence is distributed throughout a hierarchy of networks. In this paper, the fundamental differences between the network data flows and power flows are examined, and the basic requirements for an innovative operation paradigm are highlighted. The current power grid is operated in a highly inflexible, centralized manner to meet increased security goals. A new highly flexible, distributed architecture can be realized by distributing the operation responsibility in smaller areas or even in grid components that can make autonomous decisions. The characteristics of such a power grid are presented, and the key features and advances for the on-going transition to a sustainable power system are identified. Finally, a case study on distributed voltage control is presented and discussed.

Erasable itemset mining is one of the most well-known methods in data mining for optimizing limited materials. After mining erasable itemsets, the manager can rearrange the production plan effectively. However, in real applications, traditional mining methods neglect some critical factors, such as costs or quantities of components forming a product. This thesis thus considers mining erasable itemsets from a product database with quantitative components. An erasable profit-based itemset mining (EPIM) algorithm is proposed to mine erasable itemsets with low profits by analyzing the relationships between products and components. In experiments, a synthetic dataset was used to compare the performance in execution speed and memory usage under various threshold settings. It can also be easily generalized to find erasable itemsets satisfying the other criteria with a quantitative product database. © 2024 ACM.

This paper studies the problem of modifying the input matrix of a structured system to make the system strongly structurally controllable. We focus on the generalized structured systems that rely on zero/nonzero/arbitrary structure, i.e., some entries of system matrices are zeros, some are nonzero, and the remaining entries can be zero or nonzero (arbitrary). We derive the feasibility conditions of the problem, and if it is feasible, we reformulate it into another equivalent problem. This new formulation leads to a greedy heuristic algorithm. However, we also show that the greedy algorithm can give arbitrarily poor solutions for some special systems. Our alternative approach is a randomized Markov chain Monte Carlo-based algorithm. Unlike the greedy algorithm, this algorithm is guaranteed to converge to an optimal solution with high probability. Finally, we numerically evaluate the algorithms on random graphs to show that the algorithms perform well. © 2024 IEEE.
