The demand for continual machine learning in the context of limited computational resources and data availability is critical in the evolving landscape of the connected digital world. Current network applications predominantly rely on deep learning models that require labor/computation-intensive training processes. These models often struggle to effectively adapt to new data while preserving performance on previously acquired knowledge. In this paper, we introduce a lightweight framework for continual knowledge adaptation and learning designed to address these challenges. To prevent disruption of existing services, we propose an attention-based adapter that integrates seamlessly with the existing vision model to encode new incoming data. The weights of the original model are kept fixed during the adaptation process, ensuring the preservation of previously learned knowledge. Furthermore, to enhance learning efficiency and accelerate convergence with new data, we implement a knowledge fusion mechanism that facilitates interaction between existing knowledge and information from new data. Our framework is modular, enabling flexible deployment across distributed devices. The adapter and knowledge fusion module are implemented at each stage with minimal trainable parameters, optimizing resource usage. Extensive experiments and ablation studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. © 2024 IEEE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on student life and academic performance. Moreover, different demographic groups have experienced the pandemic very differently. An important factor in the student learning process and therefore academic performance is student help seeking behaviors in office hours. In this paper, we examine the ways in which the pandemic has affected student use of office hours. We examined office hours usage trends with data from three large computing courses. We augmented this dataset with demographic information from university records. Each entry in our dataset contains information about the time and date of an office hours encounter, the instructor, the student, and the student's gender and underrepresented minority (URM) status. In total, our dataset comprised 33,136 unique encounters. Our research question examines whether the onset of the pandemic affected the way that students use office hours and if these patterns varied with demographics. Our results suggest the impact of the pandemic on office hours usage patterns was small. We were surprised to find that the factor with the largest magnitude was not the onset of the pandemic, but rather a student's gender. Men averaged 31.49% fewer office hours encounters compared to women, regardless of pandemic onset. Additionally, we found that the relationship between underrepresented-minority status and office hours encounters was not statistically significant. © American Society for engineering Education, 2023.

In this note, a new structure of Right Coprime Factorization (RCF) for nonlinear systems with uncertainty has been proposed based on a time-varying Bezout identity. This is inspired from the concept of dilation from homogeneous theory. However, this time-varying dilation in right coprime factorized uncertain nonlinear systems is not limited to homogeneous plants but is integrated into Bezout identity so as to ensure the bounded input bounded output (BIBO) stability of uncertain systems. Additionally, simulation results of two numerical examples are exhibited to validate the proposition. © 2024 IEEE.

Technology is changing how students learn in the 21st century significantly. Integrating mobile devices in teaching, learning, and assessment processes has emerged as an important strategy for improving teaching methodologies and students' learning. However, adopting mobile devices presents several challenges, including understanding the students' performance, impact on time, and efficiency in the assessment process. This study explores this area with an empirical study of using mobile devices and compares the results to those using traditional desktop computers. In the educational environment, we investigated students' effective use while interacting with mobile and desktop versions of the Second Introductory programming summative assessment. Multinational/multi-institutional research involved a comparative analysis between two student groups undertaking identical tasks on mobile phones and desktop computers. Our results suggest that the students' results are not affected significantly by using the mobile version of the assessment application. These results highlight the usability of mobile devices as a flexible and effective tool for various educational applications, strengthening their role in the modern learning environment. © 2024 IEEE.

Differential privacy, the current gold standard for data anonymization and protection, is commonly known to cause degraded utility, and exacerbate unfairness, for different demographic groups when it is used to train a private machine learning model. However, in contrast with this long-held perception, recent work has shown that local differential privacy, a variant of differential privacy where users perturb their data on their device before it is aggregated, can surprisingly lead to improved fairness measures without significantly affecting the utility of the underlying machine learning model. Motivated by this previous work, in this paper we further show that applying randomized response, a popular local differential privacy method, does not incur disparate impact on the private model's accuracy for different demographic groups. Specifically, through conducting thorough empirical analysis in which we perform randomized response on the labels, the features, or on both the features and labels across multiple data modalities and model architectures, we empirically show that the absolute difference in utility loss for different demographic groups is negligible. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a real-time implementation of an embedded sensor network for an automated radio telescope. The sensor network consists of accelerometers, digital motor temperature sensors, azimuth and elevation encoders, ambient temperature and humidity sensors, and an over the air wireless updating system for the microcontroller. A super loop software architecture was used to collect sensor data and update the control room operation. A custom PCB was designed for the sensor that houses the microcontroller, a wireless communication module, and peripheral circuit components. A laboratory test setup was built to collect sensor data and emulate the actual system operation. The test results validated the sensor network and system operation. © 2023 IEEE.

We study the impact of forbidding short cycles to the edge density of k-planar graphs;a k-planar graph is one that can be drawn in the plane with at most k crossings per edge. Specifically, we consider three settings, according to which the forbidden substructures are 3-cycles, 4-cycles or both of them (i.e., girth ≥ 5). For all three settings and all k ∈ {1, 2, 3}, we present lower and upper bounds on the maximum number of edges in any k-planar graph on n vertices. Our bounds are of the form c n, for some explicit constant c that depends on k and on the setting. For general k ≥ 4 our bounds are of the form c √ kn, for some explicit constant c. These results are obtained by leveraging different techniques, such as the discharging method, the recently introduced density formula for non-planar graphs, and new upper bounds for the crossing number of 2- and 3-planar graphs in combination with corresponding lower bounds based on the Crossing Lemma. © Michael A. This paper presents a lossless adaptive-resolution compression technique intended for energy-constrained implantable neural interface microsystems. The proposed method seamlessly integrates with the widely-adopted ADC-direct front-end architectures with minimal overhead and no need for architectural modification, making it universally-compatible. It maintains an always-Nyquist sampling rate and employs a single-bit quantizer to overcome the limitations of previously-reported adaptive sampling and adaptive resolution methods (e.g., missing short-time events, nonlinearity, power/area overdesign). It also features continuous DC variation calculation and adjustable hysteresis bands. The method is optimized and validated through MATLAB simulations, followed by synthesis and implementation in a standard 130nm CMOS process, resulting in an active area of 0.0529 mm2 and total power consumption of 1.9μW @ 128kHz. Post-layout verification was conducted using prerecorded EEG and ECG datasets, demonstrating a minimum compression ratio of 83.75% of the theoretical maximum (i.e., NH NL), highlighting its effectiveness for implantable neural recording devices. © 2023 IEEE.

To maintain stable grid operations, system monitoring and control processes require the computation of grid states (e.g., voltage magnitude and angles) at high granularity. It is necessary to infer these grid states from measurements generated by a limited number of sensors like phasor measurement units (PMUs) that can be subjected to delays and losses due to channel artefacts, and/or adversarial attacks (e.g. denial of service, jamming, etc.). We propose a novel graph signal processing (GSP) based algorithm to interpolate states of the entire grid from observations of a small number of grid measurements. It is a two-stage process, where first an underlying Hermitian graph is learnt empirically from existing grid datasets offline. Then, the graph is used to interpolate missing grid signal samples online in linear time. With our proposal, we can reconstruct grid signals with significantly smaller number of observations when compared to traditional approaches (e.g. state estimation). In contrast to existing GSP approaches, we do not require knowledge of the underlying grid structure and parameters and are able to guarantee fast spectral optimization. We demonstrate the computational efficacy and accuracy of our proposal via practical studies conducted on the IEEE 118 bus system. © 2023 IEEE.
