Neuromorphic circuit design utilizing emergent memory technologies has been recently popular due to the rich intrinsic dynamics accommodating in nanoscale devices, namely in threshold switches or locally active memristors (LAMs). In this work, we introduce a qualitative approach for the design of a locally active memristor based 2nd order bio-inspired neuron circuit. We initially examine the phase plane characteristics of the 2nd order biologically plausible INa,p + IK neuron model and compare them with the same characteristics of the LAM based Leaky integrate and Fire (LIF) neuron circuit. Consequently, we define the current of the LAM as the spiking variable and voltage of the parallel capacitor as the recovery variable for the LIF circuit. Then, in order to match the phase plane characteristics of the INa,p + IK model, we adopt a qualitative approach and modify the LIF circuit by replacing the linear bias resistor with a nonlinear counterpart with a sinh nonlinearity. This way, we show that the proposed circuit can better capture the neuronal dynamics of the INa,p + IK model and exhibit distinctive features such as the co-existence of resting and limit cycle states. Our future work should cover quantitative analysis for the precise implementation of the neuronal dynamical features. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper deals with the design of the grounding system of wind farms (W/F). The study investigates various simulation scenarios to determine different types of fault currents based on several short-circuit calculation (SCC) methods and the fault location. The predominant target of this paper is to determine the maximum ground fault current and the calculation of the hazardous developed potentials, such as touch and step voltages, which must not exceed permissible safety limits as specified by international standards. The aforementioned calculations are performed using appropriate software tools. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper aims to introduce readers to the issues surrounding electric vehicle (EV) charging and the potential problems arising from the expanding trend of electro mobility. It defines various EV charging methods, utilizing different types of charging stations and compatible connectors. Another key focus of this work is the set of options for controlling the power of charging stations at various levels, presenting power management strategies essential for the development of electro mobility worldwide. It is also dedicated to measuring EV charging and analyzing the collected data. Through measurements conducted in the professional laboratory of the electrical engineering department at the Technical University of Kosice, the paper provides an objective view on the feedback effects of charging. It analyzes the charging of one electric vehicle, simulating the process of private home charging, and by examining the current charging of two electric vehicles, it simulates the process of mass public charging. The measurement results evaluate the feedback effects of both charging scenarios and offer recommendations for practice in future charging station construction. The exploration of the electric vehicle charging analysis has yielded numerous practical experiences, especially through expert consultations with employees of Vychodoslovenska distribucna a.s. Participating in laboratory measurements at the Smart Industry Lab and accessing measuring devices and evaluation software were immensely beneficial.

The paper presents calibration setup and method dedicated to almost all types of omnidirectional mirrors such as hyperbolic and elliptic as well as including those with analytically or even numerically defined curvature. At its initial stage the calibration procedure use a pinhole and fisheye camera calibration algorithms to estimate and remove optical distortions introduced to catadioptric system by the image recorder and lens. The next stage allows to calculate the projection characteristics of the mirror and complex matrix of image deformation which can be further used for a low-cost image correction. Calibration procedure was verified using mirror prototypes manufactured with application of CNC milling machines and Physical Vapor Deposition technique. Three mirrors with 15°, 30° and 45° top view angles were tested. Projection characteristics were evaluated for a set of wide range cloud-to-ground lightning video registrations. Proposed method can be implemented to improve quality of omnidirectional observation and photogrammetry. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In today’s world, there is practically no industry in the economic sector that does not utilize IT solutions. Modern companies in the TSL (Transport - Forwarding - Logistics) industry use advanced IT solutions at every stage of business management. This article proposes a concept for applying fuzzy logic to identify and evaluate drivers’ driving styles. It discusses the issues and significance of analyzing driving styles in the context of fleet management. The current solutions, existing methods, and technologies used by companies to monitor and evaluate driving styles are presented, along with their limitations. The analysis is based on solutions from several leading companies in the sector. Subsequently, a solution based on the use of fuzzy logic is proposed for a more effective and accurate analysis of driving styles, allowing for better fleet management strategies, cost reduction, and reduced risk on the road. The article concludes with a summary highlighting the benefits of the proposed solution and suggesting directions for further research in this area.

Drones are currently being used in more and more new fields, including those where there are many obstacles that a drone can hit while performing its task. Therefore, the need to prevent a drone from damage when it crashes into an obstacle has arisen and such protection will also enable the use of drones in new applications involving operating in a very small space with a high probability of collision. One of the solutions to this problem is to put the drone into a protective cage. This paper presents the results of load analysis on drone protective cage and the proposed one has a specific structure and consists of an external mesh with specially shaped nodes and topology of mesh elements. The whole cage is suspended on a gimbal type connection that increases the collision capabilities and minimizes the impact of collisions on the drone's behaviour and cage load. The unusual construction of the drone itself, and in particular the arrangement of the drone's propellers, allows us to maximize the operational possibilities. he results show how the loads are distributed throughout the cage and gimbal element and how they affect the drone inside. The tests were carried out both in a simulation environment and on built demonstrators in laboratory conditions and simulated operational conditions.

This innovative practice full paper describes the integration of Ph.D. students into departmental operations using Agile approaches, i.e., Serum, Serum is an agile framework originally developed for managing software development projects, but in recent years has been adapted into a framework used in classroom experiences and a management technique for non-engineering project-based work. In this work, Serum was adapted at the department operations level to enhance the efficacy of department projects and processes. A Ph.D. student acted as the Scrum Master for one of the teams. This provided the Ph.D. student with a unique experiential learning opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, significantly enhancing their learning experience. The benefits for the Ph.D. student included the development of soft skills that made them a more well-rounded Ph.D. student and the creation of meaningful relationships with the faculty members on their team which increased their sense of belonging within the department. Additionally, the Ph.D. student gained insight into the intricacies of university operations, which is valuable training for a student who seeks a career in academia. This paper aligns with a desire to improve the experience of engineering and computing education of graduate students outside of the typical classroom and research domains.

The article presents the application of Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference System to optimize the operation of a computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine for given dynamic parameters. These parameters are maximum speed, acceleration and JERK. The JERK parameter determines the rate of change of acceleration. The parameters are defined for each working axis of the machine. In order to check the correctness of the solution proposed in the paper, the learning and testing process was conducted on specially designed database including different trajectories generated for machining with different machine dynamics parameters. The approach presented in the paper using elements of fuzzy logic to optimize the operation of the CNC machine proved to be very good. The authors, in cooperation with industry, will develop the aforementioned solution leading to implementations and further scientific publications.
