The article presents the European evaluation within the scope of the project SMARTCITY:Innovative Approach Towards a Master Program on Smart Cities Technologies. The evaluation covers assessment of teachers from PC universities (SSTU, NSTU, NUM, ***, ENU), who have been selected to participate in the project-related mobilities to increase knowledge in the field of SCT. Deep Learning models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are powerful image classifiers, but what factors determine whether they attend to similar image areas as humans do? While previous studies have focused on technological factors, little is known about the role of factors that affect human attention. In the present study, we investigated how the tasks used to elicit human attention maps interact with image characteristics in modulating the similarity between humans and CNN. We varied the intentionality of human tasks, ranging from spontaneous gaze during categorization over intentional gaze-pointing up to manual area selection. Moreover, we varied the type of image to be categorized, using either singular, salient objects, indoor scenes consisting of object arrangements, or landscapes without distinct objects defining the category. The human attention maps generated in this way were compared to the CNN attention maps revealed by explainable artificial intelligence (Grad-CAM). The influence of human tasks strongly depended on image type: For objects, human manual selection produced maps that were most similar to CNN, while the specific eye movement task has little impact. For indoor scenes, spontaneous gaze produced the least similarity, while for landscapes, similarity was equally low across all human tasks. To better understand these results, we also compared the different human attention maps to each other. Wildfires threaten human lives, destroy facilities, and emit toxic smoke. Traditional wildfire monitoring methods are hindered by inflexibility (e.g., watch towers) and cannot provide precise geo-location of wildfires (e.g., satellites). Thanks to recent development in robotics, deploying uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) to monitor wildfires has become a feasible solution. This article introduces a UAS-based wildfire monitoring system and implement it in a prescribed burn test. A multirotor UAS was employed as the search agent and carried both olfactory (i.e., carbon monoxide and particulate matter) and visual (i.e., a camera) sensors to detect the existence of wildfires. A fuzzy inference system is designed to fuse olfactory sensor outputs to estimate whether the UAS detects smoke. A deep learning model, i.e., You Only Look Once version 4 (YOLOv4), is employed to identify smoke from the captured images. We deployed the proposed UAS in a prescribed burn at Tallahassee, Florida, in May 2022. Experimental results show that the proposed fuzzy inference system improves the estimation accuracy of whether the UAS detects smoke compared with the fixed threshold algorithm. In addition, the proposed YOLOv4 model can also detect smoke from captured images with a small amount of training samples.

electrical lighting has transformed human society, enabling activities to take place before sunset and improving safety and productivity in many contexts. However, the generation and use of electricity can also have significant environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. To mitigate these impacts, many countries are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources, such as Photovoltaic (PV) power. PV power is an attractive source of energy because it is renewable, abundant, and widely distributed. However, the amount of PV energy available varies depending on a range of factors, including latitude, weather patterns, and time of year. In order to better understand the potential for PV power in different regions, it is important to compare the amount of power that can be generated from the sun at different locations. In this paper, we compare the power from the sun during a year in two countries: Czechia and Vietnam. These two countries were chosen because they have different latitudes, climates, and levels of Solar irradiation. Czechia is a landlocked country in central Europe, with a temperate climate and significant seasonal variations in sunlight. Vietnam, on the other hand, is a tropical country in Southeast Asia, with a year-round humid climate and high levels of sunlight. By comparing the power from the sun in these two countries, we aim to provide insights into the potential for PV power in different regions, and to identify factors that influence the amount of power that can be generated from the sun. Overall, this study aims to contribute to our understanding of the PV energy potential of different regions and the need for tailored approaches to PV power generation that take into account the specific environmental, economic, and social contexts.

Various advances have been made in the photovoltaic industry. Even though there are technological improvements, there are many problems that this industry faces. The main aim of this article is to study the PV working principles and their existing technologies. This article discusses the Photovoltaic Effect, the process of manufacturing Solar cells, state-of-the-art PV technologies, common faults of the existing technologies, and how to gain the maximum efficiency output from the solar cells. Upon discussing these topics, finally, an in-depth analysis will be made of these problems and provide solutions to overcome these problems.

Generation of Coherent Quantum Light from a Single Impurity-Bound Exciton

Impurity-bound excitons in II-VI direct-bandgap semiconductors are promising optically active solid-state spin qubits that combine exceptional optical quantum efficiency with an ultra-low spin noise environment. Previous studies on single impurities relied on incoherent optical excitation to generate photons. However, many quantum applications require resonant driving of quantum emitters to precisely control optical transitions and maintain coherence of the emission. Here, we demonstrate coherent optical emission of quantum light from a resonantly driven single impurity-bound exciton in ZnSe. The resonantly driven emitter exhibits bright quantum light emission that preserves the phase of the resonant drive, validated through polarization interferometry. Resonant excitation enables us to directly measure the Debye-Waller factor, determined to be 0.94, which indicates high efficiency emission to the zero-phonon line. Time-resolved resonance fluorescence measurements reveal a fast optically-driven ionization process that we attribute to Auger recombination, along with a slower spontaneous ionization process having a lifetime of 21 μs due to charge tunneling from the impurity. We show that incoherent, low-power laser pumping efficiently stabilizes the charge of the impurity-bound exciton on the timescale of 9.3 ns, recovering the resonance fluorescence emission from the bound exciton. These results pave the way for coherent optical and spin control of the single impurity states through resonant excitation of impurity-bound excitons in II-VI semiconductors. © 2024, CC BY.

The article concerns the comparison of tribological properties of polymer composite PA6G with oil at ambient and elevated temperatures. Tribological tests were carried out at ambient temperature and elevated temperatures of 80 °C and 120 °C. The study used a high-temperature tribotester THT 1000 Anton Parr. The tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM G133 and G-99. The friction node was ball-on-disk. Al2O3 balls with a diameter of 6 mm were used as counter bodies. The rotating samples were made with polymer composite PA6G oil and had the shape of a disc. Tribological tests were carried out using 10 N load. The speed of sliding friction pair was 0.8 m/s. The friction radius was constant and was 17 mm for all tests. The length of the friction path has been set at 1000 m. During the test, the coefficient of friction, temperature in the friction zone and mass loss were recorded. IT tools were used to process the research results. Multi-criteria evaluation for different operating environments, while taking into account 4 criteria, showed that the work of the material tested at 120 °C is the least favourable. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Defects in wide-band-gap semiconductors are promising qubit candidates for quantum communication and computation. Epitaxially grown II-VI semiconductors are particularly promising host materials due to their direct band gap and potential for isotopic purification to a spin-zero nuclear background. Here, we show an alternative type of single photon emitter with potential electron spin qubits based on Cl impurities in ZnSe. We utilize a quantum well to increase the binding energies of donor emission and confirm single photon emission with short radiative lifetimes of 192 ps. Furthermore, we verify that the ground state of the Cl donor complex contains a single electron by observing two-electron-satellite emission, leaving the electron in higher orbital states. We also characterize the Zeeman splitting of the exciton transition by performing polarization-resolved magnetic spectroscopy on single emitters. Our results suggest single Cl impurities are suitable as a single photon source with a potential photonic interface.

The synthetic jet actuator SJA consists of an oscillating driver and cavity with at least one orifice. During periodical change of cavity volume through axisymmetric orifice a train of vortex ring is produced, which in time-averaged sense is similar to steady jet. The SJA is called zero-net-mass-flux because average mass flow rate across the orifice during integer number of cycles is equal to zero. The electrohydrodynamic device EHD induces fluid flow by corona discharge. Under high potential difference between two electrodes, ions are produced and transferred from sharp electrode to the collecting one under the Coulomb force. These ions exchange momentum with air molecules and induce fluid flow called ionic wind. The performance and energetic efficiency of novel type of flow generators is essential for their potential application such as heat transfer enhancement, flow control or propulsion. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of mechanical power or flow kinetic power to electrical power consumed by devices. The paper presents the figure of Ignacy Mościcki as an electrician and his achievements at the beginning of the last century in the field of development and implementation new measures dedicated to lightning overvoltage protection in overhead power lines. An innovative surge arrester based on the Mościcki high-voltage capacitors and a valve arrester with appropriately selected capacitors are described. The latter type of arrester with capacitors used as a bypass for spark gaps enabled to discharge the lightning current to the ground within one half-cycle of the operating voltage, and thus, much more efficiently than with the commonly used in those days horn arrester with spark gap. © 2018 IEEE.
