The paper presents the figure of Ignacy Mościcki as an electrician and his achievements at the beginning of the last century in the field of development and implementation new measures dedicated to lightning overvoltage protection in overhead power lines. An innovative surge arrester based on the Mościcki high-voltage capacitors and a valve arrester with appropriately selected capacitors are described. The latter type of arrester with capacitors used as a bypass for spark gaps enabled to discharge the lightning current to the ground within one half-cycle of the operating voltage, and thus, much more efficiently than with the commonly used in those days horn arrester with spark gap.

The paper deals with the historical development of lightning protection research, lightning protection ideas and lightning investigations in Poland. The main achievements of lightning research performed at the technical universities in Gdansk, Warsaw and Rzeszow have been characterized. Exemplary achievements related to natural lightning observations and measurements as well to those performed in laboratory scale tests have been shortly described.

The nanoparticles of some materials can be used successfully to improve tribological properties through decreasing both wear and friction borne out of contact between the contact surfaces of elements in different devices, particularly vehicles. Nanoparticles of TiO2 and ZrO2 were chosen as additives to the lithium grease lubricating the contact surfaces in tie rod ends. The object of study was the steel ball – the component of the tie rod end – mating with the polymer insert and lubricated with the pure lithium grease or containing the addition of pure TiO2, pure ZrO2 nanoparticles, with a 1%wt. Studies on friction were carried out using the tester allowing cyclical rotational motion and different loading of contact. Wear was investigated by driving a car, whose tie rod ends were analysed, on a fixed 'eight'-shape track and with a fixed velocity pattern. The aim of the study was to obtain the values and waveforms of friction moment and wear versus cycles, loading and composition of lubricating grease. The waveforms of friction coefficient were obtained using the FEM model of the analysed contact zone. Based on the obtained waveforms, recommendations for the composition of additives for lithium grease were made.

We developed a transfer and integration technique for freestanding Ge 1 Sb 2 Te 4 nano-membranes. A so-called laser micro annealing process for the precisely-local formation of low resistance Ge 1 Sb 2 Te 4 /Ti/Au ohmic contacts was optimized. Ultrafast switching effects were studied on nano-membrane devices after their implementation into a group III-nitride based optoelectronic circuit. Highly resistive switching was observed without any noticeable structural deterioration. Charge transport measurements indicate that current densities exhibit values in the "READ resp. SET/RESET" regime from 10 -6 down to 10 -11 A/μm 3 after ~100 switching cycles. Our study on freestanding Ge 1 Sb 2 Te 4 nano-membranes contributes to a better understanding of charge transport related physical phenomena in novel chalcogenide material systems with high potential for future low energy consumption data storage devices.

The paper concerns low-frequency properties of mid-wavelength infrared type-II InAs/GaSb superlattice nBn detector. The current noise was directly measured in the range of 1-10~4 Hz at 77 K and detectivity was determined in this frequency range and temperature. The common 1/f component found in the noise spectra was shown to originate from random processes occurring in surface imperfections that modulate both side-wall leakage and bulk currents.
