Image Quality Assessment (IQA) with references plays an important role in optimizing and evaluating computer vision tasks. Traditional methods assume that all pixels of the reference and test images are fully aligned. Such Aligned-Reference IQA (AR-IQA) approaches fail to address many real-world problems with various geometric deformations between the two images. Although significant effort has been made to attack Geometrically-Disparate-Reference IQA (GDR-IQA) problem, it has been addressed in a task-dependent fashion, for example, by dedicated designs for image super-resolution and retargeting, or by assuming the geometric distortions to be small that can be countered by translation-robust filters or by explicit image registrations. Here we rethink this problem and propose a unified, non-training-based Deep Structural Similarity (DeepSSIM) approach to address the above problems in a single framework, which assesses structural similarity of deep features in a simple but efficient way and uses an attention calibration strategy to alleviate attention deviation. The proposed method, without application-specific design, achieves state-of-the-art performance on AR-IQA datasets and meanwhile shows strong robustness to various GDR-IQA test cases. Interestingly, our test also shows the effectiveness of DeepSSIM as an optimization tool for training image super-resolution, enhancement and restoration, implying an even wider generalizability. 1 Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The rapid development of edge artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about revolutionary changes in supply chain management (SCM). It not only provides real-time data processing capabilities but also accelerates the decision-making process, injecting more innovative elements into SCM. In this context, SCM platforms require new technological developments and effective evaluations, as they collectively drive the efficient coordination of complex business processes. SCM platforms enable the seamless coordination of various supply chain elements, facilitating streamlined operations and enhanced decision-making processes. The evaluation of these platforms not only serves to validate their performance and effectiveness, but also contributes to continual improvements in design and application, and addressing the evolving demands within the realms of global commerce and dynamic market conditions. The ongoing assessment and enhancement of SCM platforms play a crucial role in optimizing resource allocation, improving production efficiency, and fostering adaptability to changing market dynamics. However, the acquisition of assessment data often introduces imprecise data. Additionally, the large-scale nature and bounded rationality of decision-makers (DMs) significantly impact the evaluation of SCM platforms. This article aims to explore a collaborative large-scale information fusion approach and provide a robust fuzzy framework for evaluating SCM platforms. This approach employs a combination of spherical fuzzy sets (SFSs), large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM), behavioral theories and three-way decisions (TWD) to thoroughly explore collaborative large-scale information fusion and its practical application in assessing SCM platforms. Students behavior in the classroom has a close relation with the academic performance of students. With the widespread use of mobile phones, the students are easily distracted by mobile phones during the class. Therefore, analyzing the students behavior in the classroom becomes important to improve the quality of teaching. However, the existing methods for analyzing students behavior in the classroom, such as facial recognition, has low efficiency with large amounts of irrelevant data. And it also raises concerns about privacy and ethical issues. To solve this problem, in this paper, a novel mobile software called EasyClass has been developed to collect and quantify students behaviors. Based on the data collected by EasyClass, we propose to utilize user profiling to study students behavior in the classroom. The clustering algorithm is firstly employed to classify the data and generate semantically tags which describe students behavior in the classroom. Then a sequence and association rule analysis method is used to analyze the behavior tags and generated association rules. The results enable educators and non-expert users to gain a deeper understanding of students behavior in the classroom, and further improve the quality of the classroom teaching.

Automated wood defect detection is of great significance for improving wood utilization. However, the stains on the wood surface resemble defect features and it is difficult to distinguish the appearance of wane from defect-free regions. Relying solely on machine vision for extracting surface features of wood makes it difficult to achieve accurate defect detection. To address these challenges, we propose MMDNet, a multimodal detection network that combines point cloud and image data. By adaptively fusing point cloud and image features at multiple stages, the network effectively highlights wood surface defect regions. Additionally, we introduce an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module into the network, which expands the network's receptive field and enables a comprehensive perception of the defects. Furthermore, we employ a deep supervision strategy to encourage the network to learn discriminative feature representations, enhancing the model's ability to differentiate defect regions. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method in detecting defects that are similar to the background and reducing interference from stains.

Over the past decade, the continuous surge in cloud computing demand has intensified data center workloads, leading to significant carbon emissions and driving the need for improving their efficiency and sustainability. This paper focuses on the optimal allocation problem of batch compute loads with temporal and spatial flexibility across a global network of data centers. We propose a bilevel game-theoretic solution approach that captures the inherent hierarchical relationship between supervisory control objectives, such as carbon reduction and peak shaving, and operational objectives, such as priority-aware scheduling. Numerical simulations with real carbon intensity data demonstrate that the proposed approach success-fully reduces carbon emissions while simultaneously ensuring operational reliability and priority-aware scheduling.

This paper introduces a physically-intuitive notion of inter-area dynamics in systems comprising multiple interconnected energy conversion modules. The idea builds on an earlier general approach of setting their structural properties by modeling internal dynamics in stand-alone modules (components, areas) using the fundamental conservation laws between energy stored and generated, and then constraining explicitly their Tellegen’s quantities (power and rate of change of power). In this paper we derive, by following the same principles, a transformed state-space model for a general nonlinear system. Using this model we show the existence of an area-level interaction variable, intVar, whose rate of change depends solely on the area internal power imbalance and is independent of the model complexity used for representing individual module dynamics in the area. Given these structural properties of stand-alone modules, we define in this paper for the first time an inter-area variable as the difference of power wave incident to tie-line from Area I and the power reflected into tie-lie from Area II. Notably, these power waves represent the interaction variables associated with the two respective interconnected areas. We illustrate these notions using a linearized case of two lossless inter-connected areas, and show the existence of a new inter-area mode when the areas get connected. We suggest that lessons learned in this paper open possibilities for computationally-efficient modeling and control of inter-area oscillations, and offer further the basis for modeling and control of dynamics in changing systems comprising faster energy conversion processes.

In public spaces shared with humans, ensuring multi-robot systems navigate without collisions while respecting social norms is challenging, particularly with limited communication. Although current robot social navigation techniques leverage advances in reinforcement learning and deep learning, they frequently overlook robot dynamics in simulations, leading to a simulation-to-reality gap. In this paper, we bridge this gap by presenting a new multi-robot social navigation environment crafted using Dec-POSMDP and multi-agent reinforcement learning. Furthermore, we introduce SAMARL: a novel benchmark for cooperative multi-robot social navigation. SAMARL employs a unique spatial-temporal transformer combined with multi-agent reinforcement learning. This approach effectively captures the complex interactions between robots and humans, thus promoting cooperative tendencies in multi-robot systems. Our extensive experiments reveal that SAMARL outperforms existing baseline and ablation models in our designed environment. Demo videos for this work can be found at: https://***/view/samarl

We propose a coarse symbol timing scheme for wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using an optimal correlation-based circular-shifted preamble (CSP). Our proposed scheme is implemented by off-line correlation-ranking and on-line processing. The on-line processing derives an optimal CSP for transmission according to the off-line correlation-ranking, and employs a delayed multiplication operation for symbol timing. The conducted simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the other existing representative schemes over typical multi-path fading channels in terms of mean square error (MSE) while keeping the computational complexity low. We provide two results concerning the optimality of the stochastic-mutual information (SMI) decoder, which chooses the estimated message according to a posterior probability mass function, which is proportional to the exponentiated empirical mutual information induced by the channel output sequence and the different codewords. First, we prove that the error exponents of the typical random codes under the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) decoder and the SMI decoder are equal. As a corollary to this result, we also show that the error exponents of the expurgated codes under the ML and the SMI decoders are equal. These results strengthen the well-known result due to Csiszár and Körner, according to which, the ML and the maximum-mutual information (MMI) decoders achieve equal random-coding error exponents, since the error exponents of the typical random code and the expurgated code are strictly higher than the random-coding error exponents, at least at low coding rates. The universal optimality of the SMI decoder, in the random-coding error exponent sense, is easily proven by commuting the expectation over the channel noise and the expectation over the ensemble. This commutation can no longer be carried out, when it comes to typical and expurgated exponents. Therefore, the proof of the universal optimality of the SMI decoder must be completely different and it turns out to be highly non-trivial.

We use the concept of information sufficiency (IS) to represent probabilistic structures in machine learning (ML). Our main result provides a functional expression that charac-terizes the class of probabilistic models consistent with an IS encoder-decoder latent predictive structure. This result formally justifies the encoder-decoder forward stages many modern ML architectures adopt to learn latent (compressed) representations in data. To illustrate IS as a realistic and rele-vant model assumption, we revisit some known ML concepts and present some interesting new examples: invariant, robust, sparse, and digital models.
