The growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy has driven researchers and engineers to explore renewable energy sources to complement traditional power grids. Wind energy conversion systems (WECS), particularly those using permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), are among the most widely adopted renewable energy solutions. Integrating WECS into traditional grids introduces challenges, including power system oscillations, especially during disturbances or faults. Inertia control and power electronics converters are pivotal in mitigating these oscillations and ensuring grid stability. This review investigates the design and optimization of damping controllers, emphasizing their integration with excitation systems to enhance the dynamic performance of PMSG-based wind integrated grids. Additionally, the role of power electronics in control strategies and inertia emulation for stable grid operation is discussed. The findings highlight the critical importance of advanced control measures in addressing the inherent uncertainties of renewable energy systems integrated with conventional grids.

A joint research project 'real-time lightning 3D imaging and forecasting project for sustainable and reliable supply of energy and storm disaster early warning' has been selected for Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. Held in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia, which suffers from serious lightning disasters with more than 200 lightning days per year, this research aims to contribute to disaster prevention by forecasting lightning strikes by constructing the world's highest lightning observation network. This research project is to conduct the field campaigns associated with artificial rocket-triggered lightning in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca, where the thunderstorm activity is very high and there are many positive cloud-to-ground flashes that may damage electric, communication and other equipments. Measurements of radio waves in various frequency bands and high-energy radiations, and several Rogowski coils are set up surrounding the strike points. It is planned to realize an electromagnetic field observation network in VHF and LF bands to observe the entire progression of each lightning in detail in a wide area. 3D charge distribution in the thundercloud and the amounts of neutralized charges estimated from the information where the lightning discharge begins, how it progresses, and where it terminates. Then, it is examined by the lightning current waveform measured directly with the high structure and rocket-triggered lightning. By comprehensively grasping the charge behavior in the air related to lightning discharge, it is possible to estimate the charge distribution in the cloud and to predict lightning strike. In addition, promoting the control of electric power equipment using IoT, and the early warning system of severe weather disasters to be implemented in the society. Fusion of Activation Functions: An Alternative to Improving Prediction Accuracy in Artificial Neural Networks

The purpose of this study was to address the challenges in predicting and classifying accuracy in modeling Container Dwell Time (CDT) using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). This objective was driven by the suboptimal outcomes reported in previous studies and sought to apply an innovative approach to improve these results. To achieve this, the study applied the Fusion of Activation Functions (FAFs) to a substantial dataset. This dataset included 307,594 container records from the Port of Tema from 2014 to 2022, encompassing both import and transit containers. The RandomizedSearchCV algorithm from Python’s Scikit-learn library was utilized in the methodological approach to yield the optimal activation function for prediction accuracy. The results indicated that “ajaLT”, a fusion of the Logistic and Hyperbolic Tangent Activation Functions, provided the best prediction accuracy, reaching a high of 82%. Despite these encouraging findings, it’s crucial to recognize the study’s limitations. While Fusion of Activation Functions is a promising method, further evaluation is necessary across different container types and port operations to ascertain the broader applicability and generalizability of these findings. The original value of this study lies in its innovative application of FAFs to CDT. Unlike previous studies, this research evaluates the method based on prediction accuracy rather than training time. It opens new avenues for machine learning engineers and researchers in applying FAFs to enhance prediction accuracy in CDT modeling, contributing to a previously underexplored area.

Enhancing Child Vocalization Classification with Phonetically-Tuned Embeddings for Assisting Autism Diagnosis

The assessment of children at risk of autism typically involves a clinician observing, taking notes, and rating children’s behaviors. A machine learning model that can label adult and child audio may largely save labor in coding children’s behaviors, helping clinicians capture critical events and better communicate with parents. In this study, we leverage Wav2Vec 2.0 (W2V2), pre-trained on 4300-hour of home audio of children under 5 years old, to build a unified system for tasks of clinician-child speaker diarization and vocalization classification (VC). To enhance children’s VC, we build a W2V2 phoneme recognition system for children under 4 years old, and we incorporate its phonetically-tuned embeddings as auxiliary features or recognize pseudo phonetic transcripts as an auxiliary task. We test our method on two corpora (Rapid-ABC and BabbleCor) and obtain consistent improvements. Additionally, we outperform the state-of-the-art performance on the reproducible subset of BabbleCor. © 2023, CC BY.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach to deal with the cooperative localization problem in wireless sensor networks based on received signal strength measurements. In cooperative scenarios, the cost function of the localization problem becomes increasingly nonlinear and nonconvex due to the heightened interaction between sensor nodes, making the estimation of the positions of the target nodes more challenging. Although most of existing cooperative localization algorithms assure acceptable localization accuracy, their computational complexity increases dramatically, which may restrict their applicability. To reduce the computational complexity and provide competitive localization accuracy at the same time, we propose a localization algorithm based on the differential evolution with multiple populations, opposite-based learning, redirection, and anchoring. In this work, the cooperative localization cost function is split into several simpler cost functions, each of which accounts only for one individual target node. Then, each cost function is solved by a dedicated population of the proposed algorithm. In addition, an enhanced version of the proposed algorithm which incorporates the population midpoint scheme for further improvement in the localization accuracy is devised. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms provide comparative localization accuracy with much lower computational complexity compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms. DC shipboard microgrids (SMGs) are a low-carbon and feasible solution to host various distributed energy resources (DERs) and shipboard loads. However, the intermittency of DERs and constant power load (CPL) characteristic of the shipboard loads will compromise the stability of DC SMGs. To accommodate DERs and address the stability issue in space-stringent DC SMGs simultaneously, a compound large-signal stabilization scheme is proposed in this paper to operate the interleaved multilevel boost DC-DC converter (IMBDC) in DC SMGs. It combines the high-order nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO) technique and the offset-free model predictive control (MPC) algorithm. Specifically, the uncertain variations of CPLs and circuit parameters are modeled as disturbances. High-order NDOs are used to estimate these disturbances accurately within a finite time. Depending on the estimation and system model, the MPC will regulate the system states against large-signal disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional linear and nonlinear control schemes with better stability and dynamic performances. Both the real-time simulation and hardware experiment results are provided to further validate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper introduces the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as lightweight wireless access points that leverage the fixed infrastructure in the context of the emerging open radio access network (O-RAN). More precisely, we introduce the aerial radio unit (A-RU) that dynamically serves an underserved area and connects to the distributed unit (ODU) via a wireless fronthaul between the UAV and the closest fixed network infrastructure tower. In this paper we employ artificial intelligence (AI) for determining the UAV trajectory for serving User Equipment (UEs) while maintaining the fronthaul connectivity to the O-DU at the same time in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channel. We first formulate the trajectory time and throughput rate; however, owing to the nonconvexity of the problem of maximizing the network throughput based on UAV location, we put our effort to achieve these goals by RL approach. Three different approaches have been presented. We first divide the area into a grid and let the UAV explore the environment by flying from point A to point B using both the offline Q-learning and the online SARSA algorithm and the pathloss as the reward. With the intention of maximizing the average payoff, the trajectory in the first scenario is described as a Markov decision process (MDP). According to simulations, MDP produces better results in a smaller area and in less time. In contrast, SARSA performs better in larger environments at the expense of a longer flight duration.
