Images are widely used in social networks, necessitating efficient and secure transmission, especially in bandwidth-constrained environments. This article aims to develop a color image encryption algorithm that enhances security while optimizing computational efficiency. A novel parallel color image encryption algorithm based on the 2-D logistic-Rulkov neuron map (2D-LRNM) is proposed. In this approach, the three channels of the color image are first separated. Cross-channel information interaction is introduced to form three new channels, which are then processed in parallel. During the encryption process of each channel, a block-wise parallel encryption mechanism is applied, ensuring simultaneous encryption of each block. This block-wise strategy effectively leverages parallel computing resources and balances the task load. To meet the demand for a large number of keystreams during encryption, the 2D-LRNM is introduced. It combines the simplicity and chaotic properties of the Logistic map with the multitimescale dynamics and neurodynamic behaviors of the Rulkov map. By overcoming the dimensional limitations inherent in the single Logistic map, this approach extends the system to a 2-D framework, significantly increasing the complexity of chaotic behavior and improving its unpredictability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed encryption algorithm achieves high security and reduces computation time by approximately 83.3%. © 2014 IEEE.

Phase detection plays a key role in many scientific and industrial applications. Nowadays interest is put also in using the phase difference as a way to deploy localization and positioning systems. In this work, we describe and experimentally validate a novel and lightweight digital approach to phase difference estimation based on time delay measurement. The architecture is fully synchronous and employs a coarse simple Time-to-Digital converter fed by delay measurement stages to transform the phase difference information into a digital word. The experimental campaign proves what is described through the formulas that can be employed to dimension the architecture based on the desired accuracy. © 2023 University of Split, FESB.

Last-mile delivery is one of the most discussed problems of the last decade due to the growing importance of e-commerce and the development of Industry 4.0. In particular, this problem regards the delivery of parcels from the warehouse to the final customers. In order to bring efficiency and innovation, in this paper a hybrid delivery architecture is considered, which takes advantage of the combined use of a drone and a truck to perform a sequence of pick-ups and deliveries, and the problem of optimal control of the drones' missions is addressed. The reference scenario is the smart city where the drone of the hybrid delivery architecture is in charge of three different pick-up and delivery missions: truck to point (i.e., pick-up from the truck and delivery to the customer), point to point (i.e., delivery to a customer and pick-up from the subsequent customer), and point to truck (i.e., reentry from a customer to the truck). From the control point of view, the drone is optimally guided in all the operating modes, i.e., ascent and descent from/to truck mode, free flight mode with/without payload, and descent for pick-up/delivery mode, by a receding horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR), which is able to manage the drone in the dynamic landing on a movable vehicle and to allow the changing in real time of the landing point on the truck. Simulation results of the truck-drone delivery architecture are presented and discussed in detail, proving the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.

A typical aerial medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) rescue retrieves a patient into the helicopter by shortening a 6-meter-long cable. This paper is dedicated to the design, construction, testing, and analysis of the swing stabilization of a gyroscope-equipped payload with variable length control of the cable. The stabilization algorithm uses real-time gyroscope data to control the hoist. Tracking software is employed to meticulously acquire experimental data from videos of the rescues. These data sets are subsequently analyzed using MATLAB. This paper aims to emphasize the necessity for enhancements in sensor platforms and to establish precise constraints for future rescue scenarios. Testing results for a rescue scenario show that the 6.0 m cable is shortened to approximately 0.2 m in about 75 s in two phases. In the first phase, the cable length decreases to 3.7 m in ≈72 s by shortening the cable at the ends of the swing. In the second phase, the cable is continuously shortened to ≈0.2 m in length from t ≈ 72 s to t ≈ 75 s. The results demonstrate that swing stabilization with reduced swing angle is achieved using variable length control hoisting. © 2024 IEEE.

With the proliferation of smart mobile devices and next-generation wireless communication technologies, federated learning (FL) has garnered significant attention as an emerging paradigm for privacy-preserving distributed model training. However, the traditional FL frameworks assume a static model aggregator such as the base station, which face multiple challenges including high energy consumption, frequent device dropout, and compromised model convergence. To address these issues, this study explores a novel FL framework called unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted FL. The primary objective is to leverage UAVs as movable model aggregators, which collaborate with devices to minimize the energy consumption and ensure satisfactory convergence accuracy of FL. By adopting the distributed approximate newton (DANE) algorithm as the local optimizer, we first analyze the convergence of UAV-assisted FL and derive a device scheduling constraint to foster convergence. Subsequently, an optimization problem that aims at minimizing the total device energy consumption is formulated, which jointly optimizes the UAV trajectory, user selection, time slot length, and the uplink transmission power, CPU frequency, and local convergence accuracy of devices, while maintaining a desired global accuracy. This non-convex optimization problem is then decomposed into three subproblems and solved via the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed UAV-Assisted FL framework significantly reduces the total device energy consumption compared to baseline approaches and achieves a better balance with the model accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a design guidance for zero current detection (ZCD) circuit in Gallium-Nitride (GaN) device based critical conduction mode (CRM) pulse-width-modulation (PWM) converters to reduce the sensing delay, avoid false trigger and prevent trigger missing. A ZCD signal processing logic is also proposed for CRM PWM converters to limit the maximum switching frequency while keeping a simple closed loop control structure. The proposed ZCD circuit design and ZCD signal processing method are verified in the simulation and on a GaN based CRM buck converter. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents an extended-conversion-ratio modulation for a two-phase symmetric series-capacitor buck (SSCB) converter. With the proposed scheme, highly efficient and regulated 48V-to-12V conversion can be realized with the SSCB topology. A versatile regulated first stage streamlines power delivery architectures for server boards in data centers, because regulated 12-V buses not only serve loads requiring well-controlled 12-V input but also simplify design and optimization of a 12V-to-1V second stage for processors. Based on this idea, a highly efficient and regulated power architecture is proposed for 48-V server boards. A prototype is built with gallium nitride (GaN) transistors and minimal high-frequency loop inductance, operating with a relatively wide input voltage range from 40 V to 60 V and generating a regulated 12-V output. In 48V-to-12V regulated conversion, the GaN-based prototype achieves 98.88% peak efficiency, 98.11% full-load efficiency (including gating loss) and 787 W/inch2 power density with 80-A output current, which is beyond the performance of state-of-the-art commercially available solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

The addition of surface acoustic wave(SAW)technologies to microfluidics has greatly advanced lab-on-a-chip applications due to their unique and powerful attributes,including high-precision manipulation,versatility,integrability,biocompatibility,contactless nature,and rapid ***,the development of SAW microfluidic devices is limited by complex and time-consuming micro/nanofabrication techniques and access to cleanroom facilities for multistep photolithography and vacuum-based *** simplify the fabrication of SAW microfluidic devices with customizable dimensions and functions,we utilized the additive manufacturing technique of aerosol jet *** successfully fabricated customized SAW microfluidic devices of varying materials,including silver nanowires,graphene,and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate(PEDOT:PSS).To characterize and compare the acoustic actuation performance of these aerosol jet printed SAW microfluidic devices with their cleanroom-fabricated counterparts,the wave displacements and resonant frequencies of the different fabricated devices were directly measured through scanning laser Doppler ***,to exhibit the capability of the aerosol jet printed devices for lab-on-a-chip applications,we successfully conducted acoustic streaming and particle concentration ***,we demonstrated a novel solution-based,direct-write,single-step,cleanroom-free additive manufacturing technique to rapidly develop SAW microfluidic devices that shows viability for applications in the fields of biology,chemistry,engineering,and medicine.

The two-dimensional target localization problem for a network of distributed sensor sub-arrays (with a sub-array at each receiver) is investigated in the compressive sensing framework based on group sparsity, and the well-known alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method is applied to derive a distributed implementation algorithm. It does not require transmission of the impinging signals from each sub-array to a central processor, while the whole optimisation process is realised in a distributed way. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm under certain conditions performs better than the existing group sparsity based localization method in terms of localization accuracy, speed and computational complexity. © 2024 IEEE.

Driven by the digital transformation required by Logistics 4.0, the use of automation in warehouses is constantly growing. In particular, robotic palletizers offer significant potential for optimizing warehouse operations, thanks to higher flexibility and throughput than traditional palletizing systems. Despite the availability of several solutions in the market, the optimal deployment of a robotic palletizer in warehouses is not straightforward: a design phase is needed to determine the most convenient configuration that ensures automatic palletizing is fully integrated into the warehouse processes. In this paper, we propose a simulation-based versatile tool for modeling and analysis purposes, aimed at supporting the design of a robotic palletizing cell in a bottom-up fashion. As a core methodology, we employ timed colored Petri nets, which allow - once the analysis on packing requirements and constraints is conducted - to rapidly model the system as a composition of basic subsystems, and implement alternative simulations to evaluate the corresponding performance and effectively benchmark the alternative configurations. The proposed approach is applied to a real case study, showing its effectiveness in identifying the solution that achieves a good compromise between the use of resources and the performance of warehouse operations. © 2023 IEEE.
