A micro-grid (MG) is regarded as a localized small-scale power supply system designed for providing electrical power for a remote community, which may be connected to the grid. The paper considers six participants' sites in a remote community. The peak energy consumption patterns for these participants must be different to ensure coalition for mutual benefits and this would facilitate efficient utilization of energy resources. This community concerned may include rural communities having participants such as schools, housing estates, industrial sites, etc. The propose approach would ensure that many participants and their needs are captured and optimized profit of the participants would ensure mutual benefits. In islanded MG, most of the cost/profit distributions in energy trading problems are done based on the self-interest of the participants. Some consider a fair (acceptable or reasonable) cost/profit distribution using the cooperative game theory (CGT) based on the Nash bargaining solution (NBS). However, this method leads to a high degree of dissatisfaction. To improve the fairness and mutual benefits for all MG participants, a new flexible approach is developed. Specifically, CGT which uses a generalized NBS (GNBS) has been proposed, which relaxes certain axiom of the NBS to ensure that fairness of game theory is achieved. The approach allows the profit of the MG participants to be shared using a mechanism based on the negotiation power (i.e. weighted fairness) so that the MG would attain an improved economic outcome. Empirical evaluation of the approach indicates that overall profits using CGT is higher when compared with an independent approach. Moreover, different in negotiation power is achieved in which higher profit is allocated to any participant based on participant's mutual agreement in achieving fair profit distribution. A hybrid attention deep learning network for refined segmentation of cracks from shield tunnel lining images

This research developed a hybrid position-channel network (named PCNet) through incorporating newly designed channel and position attention modules into U-Net to alleviate the crack discontinuity problem in channel and spatial dimensions. In PCNet, the U-Net is used as a baseline to extract informative spatial and channel-wise features from shield tunnel lining crack images. A channel and a position attention module are designed and embedded after each convolution layer of U-Net to model the feature interdependencies in channel and spatial dimensions. These attention modules can make the U-Net adaptively integrate local crack features with their global dependencies. Experiments were conducted utilizing the dataset based on the images from Shanghai metro shield tunnels. The results validate the effectiveness of the designed channel and position attention modules, since they can individually increase balanced accuracy (BA) by 11.25% and 12.95%, intersection over union (IoU) by 10.79% and 11.83%, and F1 score by 9.96% and 10.63%, respectively. In comparison with the state-of-the-art models (i.e. LinkNet, PSPNet, U-Net, PANet, and Mask R–CNN) on the testing dataset, the proposed PCNet outperforms others with an improvement of BA, IoU, and F1 score owing to the implementation of the channel and position attention modules. These evaluation metrics indicate that the proposed PCNet presents refined crack segmentation with improved performance and is a practicable approach to segment shield tunnel lining cracks in field practice.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and electric vehicles (EVs) demands the building of a microgrid energy portfolio that is cost-effective and robust against generation uncertainties (energy risk). Energy risk may trigger financial risk in the local energy market, depending on bid values, cost of generation and price of upstream grid power. In this study, a microgrid energy portfolio is built based on adjustments to both the financial and energy risks. These risks are managed in two ways: (1) by pre-tuning and prioritizing the bid prices for wind and solar energy sources based on their relative levels of energy risk as quantified through a conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) approach;and (2) by co-optimizing the conflicting profits of the utility and prosumers using non-dominated sorting particle swarm optimization (NSPSO) to obtain a risk-adjusted Pareto-optimal energy mix. Thus, the utility predicts the net power balancing cost from the scheduling time horizon, thereby moderating the adverse effect that the uncertainties in renewable energy could have on the collective welfare. The proposed method is tested on a grid-connected CIGRE low-voltage (LV) benchmark microgrid with solar and wind sources, microturbines, and EVs. The results demonstrate that the obtained portfolio is realistic, welfare-optimized and cost-efficient. © 2022 The Authors. Graph-based learning approaches, due to their ability to encode tissue/organ structure information, are increasingly favored for grading colorectal cancer histology images. Recent graph-based techniques involve dividing whole slide images (WSIs) into smaller or medium-sized patches, and then building graphs on each patch for direct use in training. This method, however, fails to capture the tissue structure information present in an entire WSI and relies on training from a significantly large dataset of image patches. In this paper, we propose a novel cell-to-patch graph convolutional network (C2P-GCN), which is a two-stage graph formation-based approach. In the first stage, it forms a patch-level graph based on the cell organization on each patch of a WSI. In the second stage, it forms an image-level graph based on a similarity measure between patches of a WSI considering each patch as a node of a graph. This graph representation is then fed into a multi-layer GCN-based classification network. Our approach, through its dual-phase graph construction, effectively gathers local structural details from individual patches and establishes a meaningful connection among all patches across a WSI. As C2P-GCN integrates the structural data of an entire WSI into a single graph, it allows our model to work with significantly fewer training data compared to the latest models for colorectal cancer. Experimental validation of C2P-GCN on two distinct colorectal cancer datasets demonstrates the effectiveness of our method. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper explores strategies to improve the energy efficiency and operational longevity of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) through the optimization of clustering techniques and energy efficient routing protocols. The proposed methodology is precisely crafted to optimize energy consumption (EC) while preserving the overall effectiveness of WSNs. LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Cluster Hierarchy) is a cluster-based protocol where non-cluster head nodes deactivate their RF until their allocated time slots. Nevertheless, a drawback of traditional LEACH is its random rotation of local Cluster Heads (CH), leading to unequal cluster distribution. To overcome this issue, we proposed a novel hybrid technique called LEACH-D protocol and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The LEACH-D algorithm enhances the duration of transmission tasks while ensuring uniform battery energy consumption. On the other hand, the ANN plays a pivotal role in coordinating optimal routing decisions and CH placement, refining data aggregation and transmission mechanisms to restrain idle listening. The findings indicate that the suggested approach manifests as substantial reductions in energy consumption and prolonged network lifespan of WSN. © 2024 IEEE.

Road is an essential transportation infrastructure to move people and goods to support economic prosperity. The efficiency, safety, security, and comfort of people have significant consequences by damage and defects on the road surface. A good-condition road ensures the land traffic runs well. This research is a collaboration between the Bandung Institute of Technology and the department of Public Works and Spatial Planning of West Java Province to develop a smart system for road damage surveys. The system was built by leveraging machine vision and IoT technologies to improve the performance of the road survey activities. The previous road damage detection, classification method, and pavement condition index (IKP) computation were performed semi-automatically. The proposed survey system developed in this work uses the Canny edge Detection algorithm and MobileNet V2 architecture to detect road defects automatically. The pavement condition index computation also improved by using the interpolation reduction factor. The system is designed into a four-layer architecture that consists of several functions and modules, i.e., the sensor system that includes a vision sensor, GPS and odometry, a hardware embedded system using a microcontroller, and machine learning to process the road condition image automatically, and a dashboard application to reveal the road condition on map. The performance resulted in accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score of the road damage detection are 54.5%, 24.2%, 78.9%, and 37%, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

The interband Zener-Klein interband tunneling in the field-effect transistors (FETs) with the graphene channels consisting of the reverse-biased p-i-n junctions enables the negative dynamic conductance associated with the electrons and hole propagation delays. This can lead to the self-excitation of plasmons in the gated p- and n-regions. For the submicrometer gate lengths, the frequency of these plasmons is in the terahertz (THz) range. The plasmon self-excitation in this regime can be used for the generation of THz radiation. © 2023 IEEE.

The path loss contribution in a modern telecommunications system is particularly critical due to the higher frequencies employed. However, this can be mitigated by improving the antenna section gain. Adaptive beam steering systems are an enabling technology to seek for this objective, by focusing the antenna pattern towards a given position in the space. In this work, we propose a novel architecture for adaptive beam steering. The phase shift is introduced in the Local Oscillator (LO) path thanks to a modified DDS-PLL structure. The adaptiveness is realized through the Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) estimation of a pilot tone signal. The proposed approach is validated through a simulation campaign involving Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulations. © 2024 IEEE.

In a typical wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the high frequency current picked up by the receiving coil is rectified and filtered before delivering it to the load. If the load demands line-frequency ac instead of dc, an additional dc-ac inverter stage is usually required, increasing cost and complexity. Several primary side modulation schemes for WPT systems have been previously proposed to generate ac output without the additional dc-ac stage. However, modulating the WPT output from the primary side makes the system vulnerable to interference and communication delays if closed-loop output regulation is to be implemented. In this paper, a wireless dc-ac inverter based on secondary side modulation is proposed. By modulating the duty cycle of secondary side synchronous rectifier (SR) switch, the output of the WPT secondary side becomes a rectified sine wave that can be readily converted to ac by an unfolding stage. The proposed modulation scheme eliminates the communication requirements, allows primary side to switch at a constant frequency and duty cycle, and avoids the bulky LC filters required for conventional dc-ac inverters. The proposed wireless dc-ac inverter is verified with a 240-V/450-W GaN device based hardware prototype with grid-tie capability. © 2024 IEEE.
