Deep neural networks (DNNs) have made significant strides in tackling challenging tasks in wireless systems, especially when an accurate wireless model is not available. However, when available data is limited, traditional DNNs often yield subpar results due to underfitting. At the same time, large language models (LLMs) exemplified by GPT-3, have remarkably showcased their capabilities across a broad range of natural language processing *** whether and how LLMs can benefit challenging non-language tasks in wireless systems is *** this work, we propose to leverage the in-context learning ability (a.k.a. prompting) of LLMs to solve wireless tasks in the low data regime without any training or fine-tuning, unlike DNNs which require training. We further demonstrate that the performance of LLMs varies significantly when employed with different prompt templates. To solve this issue, we employ the latest LLM calibration methods. Our results reveal that using LLMs via ICL methods generally outperforms traditional DNNs on the symbol demodulation task and yields highly confident predictions when coupled with calibration techniques. © 2024 IEEE.

As the cost of conventional fuel rises, the need for sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions becomes paramount, particularly in advancing agricultural practices. This paper introduces a Hybridized Solar-Biogas Power System designed for agricultural applications, addressing the increasing demand for automated systems to enhance productivity. The system employs a 5KVA hybrid inverter, 48V- 400AH battery backup, and a 6.5hp biogas generator, utilizing cow dung as the biogas source. Integration with an automated controller and switchover system ensures continuous power supply, even during evenings, nights, and periods of reduced sunlight. The biogas component, utilizing cow dung, demonstrates comparable running speeds to a petroleum engine, attesting to its optimal performance. This innovative hybrid system not only provides a sustainable alternative for agricultural power but also aligns with sustainable development goals (SDGs) by reducing fuel costs, emissions, and dependence on nonrenewable energy sources. As a potential solution for powering agricultural automation, this system has the capability to significantly reduce operational costs, enhance productivity, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a framework designed to optimise energy consumption in vertical farming. It aims to maximise cost efficiency by balancing between minimising system operations during the electricity price peaks and the ability to trade capacity on the FCR market while also fulfilling constraints on the internal growing process. We consider that the vertical farming system has distributed control with a series of actuators controlled by various spatially distributed PLCs that we refer to as agents, to underline their independence. The paper conducts two experiments for a lO-agent system with a Pareto controller and a lOO-agent system with a Lagrangian approach and shows the balance between more cost-efficient momentary energy consumption control. © 2024 IEEE.

An Integrated Control Framework for Safe and Ergonomic Human-Drone Interaction in Industrial Warehouses

This study introduces a novel control framework for human-drone interaction (HDI) in industrial warehouses, targeting pick-and-delivery operations. The goals are to enhance operator safety as well as well-being and, at the same time, to improve efficiency and reduce production costs. To these aims, the speed and separation monitoring (SSM) operation method is employed for the first time in HDI, drawing an analogy to the safety requirements outlined in collaborative robots' ISO standards. The so-called protective separation distance is used to ensure the safety of operators engaged in collaborative tasks with drones. In addition, we employ the rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) method to evaluate the ergonomic posture of operators during interactions with drones. To validate the proposed approach in a realistic industrial setting, a quadrotor is deployed for pick-and-delivery tasks along a predefined trajectory from the picking bay to the palletizing area, where the interaction between the drone and a moving operator takes place. The drone navigates toward the interaction space while avoiding collisions with shelves and other drones in motion. The control strategy for the drone cruise navigation integrates simultaneously the time-variant artificial potential field (APF) technique for trajectory planning and the iterative linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller for trajectory tracking. Differently, in the descent phase, the receding horizon LQR algorithm is employed to follow a trajectory planned in accordance with the SSM, which starts from the approach point at the border of the interaction space and ends in the volume with the operator's minimum RULA. The presented control strategy facilitates drone management by adapting the drone's position to changes in the operator's position while satisfying HDI safety requirements. Millimeter-size carbon dioxide (CO2)-sensitive luminescence films emerge as practical sensors in miniaturized biomedical devices for measuring transcutaneous CO2. The intensity and lifetime of the excited luminophores in the film carry critical information about the CO2 values in the surrounding environment. It has been proven that lifetime-based measurement is superior to intensity-based measurement because of its robustness to confounding factors. Addressing the challenge of accurately determining the rapid nanosecond-scale lifetime of CO2-sensitive luminophores, we introduce a behavioral model using a time-correlated single photon counting system equipped with silicon photomultipliers. We included nonidealities such as dark count rate, afterpulsing, and crosstalk to this model. To recover the lifetime from photon counts, we applied denoising and fitting techniques. With hyperparameter optimization to determine various post-processing parameters, we improved accuracy in recovery for lifetime values ranging from 3 ns to 7 ns. Our results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and techniques in real-world scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Driven by a need for ever-increasing chip performance, a growing number of semiconductor companies are opting for all-inclusive System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures. Increasingly, the solution adopted to minimize the impact of silicon defects on manufacturing yield of larger dies has been to split a design into multiple smaller dies called chiplets, which are then brought together on a silicon interposer. Advanced 2.5D and 3D packaging techniques that enable this kind of integration also promise increased power efficiency and opportunities for heterogeneous ***, despite their advantages, chiplets are not without issues. Disaggregating a design into multiple separate dies introduces new security threats, including the possibility of tampering with and probing exposed data lines. In this paper we evaluate the exposure of chiplets to probing by applying laser contactless probing techniques to a chiplet-based AMD/Xilinx VU9P FPGA. First, we identify and map interposer wire drivers, and show that probing them is easier compared to probing internal nodes. Lastly, we demonstrate that delay-based sensors, which can be used to protect against physical probes, are insufficient to protect against laser probing. © 2024 IEEE.

Physical attacks can compromise the security of cryptographic devices. Depending on the attack’s requirements, adversaries might need to (i) place probes in the proximity of the integrated circuits (ICs) package, (ii) create physical connections between their probes/wires and the system’s PCB, or (iii) physically tamper with the PCB’s components, chip’s package, or substitute the entire PCB to prepare the device for the attack. While tamper-proof enclosures prevent and detect physical access to the system, their high manufacturing cost and incompatibility with legacy systems make them unattractive for many low-cost scenarios. In this paper, inspired by methods known from the field of power integrity analysis, we demonstrate how the impedance characterization of the system’s power distribution network (PDN) using on-chip circuit-based network analyzers can detect various classes of tamper events. We explain how these embedded network analyzers, without any modifications to the system, can be deployed on FPGAs to extract the frequency response of the PDN. The analysis of these frequency responses reveals different classes of tamper events from board to chip level. To validate our claims, we run an embedded network analyzer on FPGAs of a family of commercial development kits and perform extensive measurements for various classes of PCB and IC package tampering required for conducting different side-channel or fault attacks. Using the Wasserstein Distance as a statistical metric, we further show that we can confidently detect tamper events. Our results, interestingly, show that even environment-level tampering activities, such as the proximity of contactless EM probes to the IC package or slightly polished IC package, can be detected using on-chip impedance sensing. © 2022, Ruhr-University of Bochum. Recently, third-order cumulants (TOCs) as a non-conventional odd-order statistics, has been introduced to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with the third-order nested array (TONA), which significantly increases the number of uniform degrees-of-freedom (uDOFs) and can even be comparable to the fourth-order cumulant approach. In this paper, through analysis of the second-order sum-difference co-array, a third-order sparse linear array (SLA) design scheme suitable for TOCs is proposed, which can extend the commonly used second-order SLAs to the third-order. By selecting an appropriate generator array, the derived third-order SLA has far more uDOFs than the existing TONA, greatly improving its DOA estimation accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Place recognition is a critical capability for autonomous vehicles. It matches current sensor data with a pre-built database to provide coarse localization results. However, the effectiveness of long-term place recognition may be degraded by environment changes, such as seasonal or weather changes. To have a deep understanding of this issue, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation study on several state-of-the-art range sensing-based (i.e., LiDAR and radar) place recognition methods on the Borease dataset, which encapsulates long-term localization scenarios with stark seasonal variations and adverse weather conditions. In addition, we design a novel metric to evaluate the influence of matching thresholds on place recognition performance for long-term localization. Our results and findings provide fresh insights to the community and potential directions for future study. IEEE

Apache Spark, a powerful distributed computing framework, has become a key to handling large-scale data processing tasks in many applications, including signal processing. However, there are different considerations for performance, cost, or ease of use during the development and deployment stages. This paper benchmarks Apache Spark on different local setups in terms of performance and elaborates on alternative cloud computing costs. Performances of different Spark master-slave configurations with Docker and no Docker are evaluated over different numbers of worker nodes, cores, memory, and executors. Spark WordCount benchmark is tested on Wikipedia datasets of sizes ranging from 1GB to 25GB. The results reveal that in local setups Docker creates additional parameter complexity as well as performance overheads, therefore a "no Docker" setup is a better choice. We also observe the dominance of I/O bottlenecks in local setups. These results can help practitioners choose optimal setups for different Development and Operations (DevOps) and big data processing scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.
