The power grid is vulnerable to cyberattacks due to the multitude of utilized communication-based devices. For example, remote terminal units (RTU) communicate commands or grid measurements. An encryption and decryption method is one way of preventing cyberattacks. However, sophisticated encryption and decryption methods can be time-consuming due to the large amount of data exchanged in a power system. This paper combines a Duffing oscillator, a time-based one-time frequency (TOTF) algorithm, and fast Fourier transform for preventing cyberattacks. The proposed method detects when an attacker distorts data in a high-noise environment. The proposed method is validated using simulation results on a modified communication layer by enabling the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) digital modulation method to transfer packets.

Improved Bound for Robust Causal Bandits with Linear Models

This paper investigates the robustness of causal bandits (CBs) in the face of temporal model fluctuations. This setting deviates from the existing literature's widely-adopted assumption of constant causal models. The focus is on causal systems with linear structural equation models (SEMs). The SEMs and the time-varying pre- and post-interventional statistical models are all unknown and subject to variations over time. The goal is to design a sequence of interventions that incur the smallest cumulative regret compared to an oracle aware of the entire causal model and its fluctuations. A robust CB algorithm is proposed, and its cumulative regret is analyzed by establishing both upper and lower bounds on the regret. It is shown that in a graph with maximum in-degree d, length of the largest causal path L, and an aggregate model deviation C, the regret is upper bounded by O (dL-1 2 ( √ T + C)) and lower bounded by Ω(d L2 -2 max{ √ T , d2C}). The proposed algorithm achieves nearly optimal O ( √ T) regret when C is o( √ T), maintaining sub-linear regret for a broad range of C. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The need to ensure the longevity of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and secure their communication has spurred various researchers to come up with various WSN models. Prime among the methods for extending the life span of WSNs is the clustering of Wireless Sensors (WS), which reduces the workload of WS and thereby reduces its power consumption. However, a drastic reduction in the power consumption of the sensors when multicore sensors are used in combination with sensors clustering has not been well explored. Therefore, this work proposes a WSN model that employs clustering of multicore WS. The existing Elliptic Curve Cryptographic (ECC) algorithm is optimized for parallel execution of the encryption/decryption processes and security against primitive attacks. The Elliptic Curve Diffie-Helman (ECDH) was used for the key exchange algorithm, and the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) was used to authenticate the communicating nodes. Security analysis of the model and comparative performance analysis with the existing ones were demonstrated. The security analysis results reveal that the proposed model meets the security requirements and resists various security attacks. Additionally, the projected model is scalable, energy-conservative, and supports data freshness. The results of comparative performance analysis show that the proposed WSN model can efficiently leverage multiprocessors and/or many cores for quicker execution and conserves power usage. © 2013 IEEE.

Digital engineering ecosystems rely heavily on reliable data processing, where machine learning is commonly applied. This paper addresses the perspective that Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) engineering and machine learning go hand in hand, through multi-dimensional classification learning and fault-tolerant computing. While machine learning can enhance fault-tolerant computing, reliability techniques can improve the accuracy of multi-dimensional classification learning. Algorithms developed are time efficient, allowing them to be applied to real-time application. Case studies demonstrate the efficacy of the methods.

As the U.S. moves toward cleaner electricity generation, the number of installed inverter-based resources such as wind and photovoltaic (PV) are on the rise. These inverter-based resources (IBR) rely on communication to update their real and reactive power set point; however, it opens room for cyberattacks. Previous work proposed ways to detect and mitigate cyberattacks for fully inverter-based microgrids using software simulation, but the feasibility of these methods needs to be tested using control hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL). This work develops a CHIL testbed using Typhoon HIL 402, Raspberry Pi 4, and a network switch to implement a cyber-resilient inverter control against false data injection (FDI) attacks. The Raspberry Pi 4 receives the electrical measurements from the Typhoon HIL using user datagram protocol (UDP) communication, runs the LSTM-based detection and mitigation code using the received measurements and sends back the corrected set point if an FDI attack is detected. The proposed method is tested on a fully inverter-based microgrid with four inverters under various scenarios.

Power system operation needs to match generation to load demand. Accurate load forecasting helps operators maintain the power balance, reducing generation costs and preventing outages. This paper proposes an improved fuzzy clustering load forecasting method based on similar day and normalization approaches, especially for short-term power system load forecasting. Simulation results utilizing data from PJM, demonstrate a reasonable forecast error compared to PJM day-ahead hourly load forecasts. The superiority of this method is the simple calculations and accuracy based on the historical data.

In semiconductor manufacturing, wafer defect recognition plays a critical role. As the technology advances and wafer feature sizes decrease, defect detection has become more challenging, particularly for mix-type defects. Although artificial neural network (ANN) models are currently used for this task, the high precision floating-point operations required by ANN models put significant pressure on edge computing devices in the industry. Additionally, ANN models have poor cognitive abilities and high data dependencies. Spiking neural networks (SNNs), as an excellent brain-inspired computational model, have the potential to address these problems. In this paper, we present Spiky-SANet, a novel Spiking-Self-Attention Network, which emulates the transmission of membrane potential signals in the brain using SNNs. This approach significantly reduces energy consumption during the running process, enabling efficient deployment on edge computing devices. Moreover, we introduce a multi-time-step self-attention (MTS-SA) module that emulates the interactive behavior between visual neurons and brain neurons, thereby enhancing the model's cognitive ability. Additionally, we tackle the issue of imbalanced focus on positive and negative samples by employing an asymmetric loss (ASL) function, effectively mitigating the influence of powerful negative samples. Our framework represents the pioneering attempt of SNNs in the field of wafer defect detection, achieving state-of-the-art performance and paving the way for more efficient and energy-saving semiconductor manufacturing processes. © 2025 IEEE.

In modern telecommunications systems, high frequencies lead to higher losses. One way to mitigate the path loss contribution is in the use of beam steering and beamforming techniques, which allow to improve the antenna system gain. Nowadays, the interest is put in adaptive systems, which steer the antenna pattern towards the position of a given target. In this work, we proposed a novel architecture for adaptive beam steering based on the Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) estimation. The phase shift is introduced in the Local Oscillator (LO) path thanks to a modified and lightweight DDS-PLL structure. After having described the architecture, the main dimensioning equations are presented. The architecture is validated through a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation campaign.

Terahertz band (0.1-10 THz) communication is set to play a pivotal role in the advancement of subsequent generations of wireless technology by facilitating high data rates, ultra-secure transmission, high-resolution sensing, and low-latency links, among others. Nevertheless, the issues of low transmission power and high path loss necessitate large-aperture high-gain antennas, which can result in a considerably expanded near-field operational region. The distinctive mechanism of wave propagation within this region, as well as its transition to the far-field area, necessitates a comprehensive reevaluation of channel modeling. In this paper, we discuss the effects of antennas on path loss models and channel metrics while operating in both the near- and far-field regions. We present a detailed analysis of near-field propagation mechanisms, illustrating that an antenna-agnostic channel model is not feasible. Furthermore, we discuss the potential benefits and challenges associated with these regions.

In this project, a portable water purifier powered by a solar PV panel has been designed, built and tested. Testing has shown that the water purifier works properly. It was able to filter dirty water and make it drinkable with a press of a button, meaning that the system operation is almost fully automatic. The system was able to run on its own out in the sun, as well as turn on and turn off itself thanks to a Mega 2560 microcontroller. The water purifier is small and lightweight which can be carried around easily. It is easy to use where users just need to connect the solar panel and turn the On switch. It is powered by sunlight existing anywhere on earth. The water purifier can help many people in developing countries gain access to clean water. It can also be used in disadvantaged communities, emergency cases, natural disaster events, and any situations where clean water supply is not available. Having access to clean water prevents illnesses and improves quality of people's life.
