We consider a bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) system operating in non-ideal imaging conditions with receive and transmit antennas traversing arbitrary flight trajectories over a non-flat topography; transmitting arbitrary waveforms along flight trajectories etc. In Yarman et al. (2008) we developed a generalized filtered-backprojection (GFBP) method for BiSAR image formation applicable to such non-ideal imaging scenarios. The method puts edges not only at the right location and orientation, but also at the right strength resulting in true amplitude images. The main computational complexity of the GFBP method comes from the spatially dependent filtering step. In this work, we present an alternative, novel FBP method applicable to non-ideal imaging scenarios resulting in true amplitude images. The method involves ramp filtering in data domain and image domain scaling. Additionally, the method results in fast, computationally efficient implementation than that of GFBP methods.

The problem of estimating position of a moving car based on sensor networks was hard investigated over the last period. In this paper we have considered a particle filter design to process the data coming from video sensors and able to predict the next position of a car moving in front of the sensors. The relative error resulting from algorithm will be used to calibrate the surveillance camera, in order to reduce the absolute error. The difference in our approach is that we correct the camera error by trying to predict de driver behavior, based on observing the acceleration of the car. This parameter has considered because it reflects better the behavior of the driver. Thus, in our approach, a car is moving on a road segment: almost constant; smoothly accelerating or decelerating; strongly accelerating; or respective, braking. This behavior is reflected in a probability density matrix of a simplified dynamic Markov model. Further, the hidden parameter extracted from observation and the probability density values associated with transitions states are passed to particle filter. With the aid of this tool, we predict the next position of the car, and compare it with the observed one. Based on these values the absolute and relative error of the system is computed. As proved by experiments, learning and reducing the relative error will help to reduce the absolute error in car position estimation.

A high efficiency photovoltaic (PV) module integrated converter (MIC) system is proposed. The proposed system consists of a high step-up DC-DC converter and a single-phase full-bridge inverter. The proposed step-up DC-DC converter has a high efficiency and low-profile. An input ripple current reduction control is suggested to reduce the low frequency ripple current generated by the full-bridge inverter. Overall power efficiency of 95% was obtained at 260 W output power for 36 V PV voltage with ripple current within 3% of the rated input current.

In this paper we propose a cognitive radio approach for WiMAX systems called CogMAX. The proposed system has all the capabilities of cognitive radio from monitoring to action decision and learning. We used case-based reasoning (CBR) and fuzzy logic (FL) reasoning as the core of the reasoning engine. The reasoning engine designed is used to determine the type of channel that the WiMAX system is operating in. This paper investigates the applicability of using FL and CBR as the core reasoning engine for a cognitive radio WiMAX system. Evaluation is done based on the time taken for the system to determine the type of channel and the error in the decision of the reasoning engine. Numerical results reveals that the use of a FL reasoning engine decreases the error in decision and in most cases faster in the decision making of the channel type.

Organic solar cells based on bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure fabricated by blending conjugated polymers with fullerenes have resulted in great improvements in the energy conversion efficiencies in recent years. PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl-C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester), a fullerene derivative, has been extensively investigated as a solution processable electron acceptor for BHJ photovoltaic devices blended with conjugate polymers like P3HT [poly(3-hexylthiophene)]. We investigated a novel solution processable organic semiconductor, C 60 (CN) 2 as an electron acceptor and blends with PCBM for BJH photovoltaic applications . The effect of ratios of PCBM and C 60 (CN) 2 on the optical absorption spectra, open circuit voltage, short circuit current, fill factor, efficiency and morphology is investigated. Thermal annealing has shown a significant improvement in the device performance.

In this paper, we study the synchronization problem for a wide class of weighted complex dynamical networks with nonlinear perturbations. We provide some conditions that ensure the robust (exponential) synchronization of weighted complex dynamical networks. Particularly, the main synchronization results in [1]-[3] can be recovered by our results. Numerical simulations are given to demonstrate our proposed robust synchronization approach.

A novel class based linear dimensionality reduction method is proposed, called Class-Wise Correlation Preserving Projection (CWCPP). In CWCPP, the relation among the original gene expression data is preserved according to a certain kind of similarity between data points, which takes special consideration of both the correlation information and the class information. Different from the traditional method, i.e., Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLD), CWCPP utilizes correlation information to guide the procedure of linear projection directions searching. Experiments on yeast gene expression data and NCI gene expression data are performed to test and evaluate the proposed algorithm.

In this paper the RapidRadio framework for signal classification and receiver deployment is discussed. The framework is a productivity enhancing tool that reduces the required knowledge-base for implementing a receiver on an FPGA-based SDR platform. The ultimate objective of this framework is to identify unknown signals and to build FPGA-based receivers capable of receiving them. The framework's capacity to classify a signal and deploy a functional receiver is validated with over- the-air experiments.

Building upon of a set of innovative hands-on laboratory courses developed at Virginia Tech (VT) known as Lab-in-a-Box (LiaB), LiaB is now being expanded to Virginia Community Colleges (VCCS) where faculty from VT and the VCCS are working to incorporate LiaB into the engineering and engineering technology programs. As implemented at VT, the students design, build, and test at home various d.c. and a.c. circuits using an inexpensive electronics and demonstrate the operation of these circuits in an open classroom environment. LiaB covers topics ranging from simple resistive circuits to filters and provides students a physical representation of models created in various circuit modeling software programs. Modifications to the way in which the students are engaged in the LiaB experiments have been instituted at three VCCS community colleges to tailor the laboratory experience to instructional environment at each school. Learning materials are under development, to support students to achieve a deeper depth of learning of the underlying circuit theory. Non-traditional dissemination avenues, such as podcasts and Flash tutorials, are being considered as a means to engage students in the learning process. Evaluation of the courses and learning materials and assessment of the learning outcomes at VT and at the three VCCS has recently begun.

This paper proposed a graph-based clustering approach for gene expression data. The new method is based on regulatory network graph obtained from gene expression data. Clustering is performed based on the topological features of the graph which characterizes the regulatory relationships between genes, which is different from the conventional methods that simply group genes with similar gene expression patterns. The performance of the proposed method is assessed by real gene expression data clustering. The results clearly show that the proposed method can give higher accuracies in clustering recognition than the traditional approaches which are based on similarity between gene expression patterns.
