This study addresses a proposal of a bench to test single-phase induction motors and switched reluctance motors with rated power up to 1 hp. The bench was set up so that single-phase induction motor tests meet requirements of IEEE Std. 114–2001 and the Brazilian related Standard (ABNT NBR 5383-2/2008). In addition, the test procedures for reluctance motors comprise sequential steps in order to determine the motor performance under different switching angles with constant speed. The measurement system is completely computer automated using virtual instrumentation based on LabVIEW™ platform in order to process information sampled via data acquisition board. Besides the development and implementation of a virtual test environment, one important contribution of the proposed methodology is the utilization of an induction motor, whose rated power is at least ten times greater than that of the prospective motor under test. This larger motor acts as a driver for the motor under test, yielding a flexible system able to quickly carry out torque and current measurements and to assess motor performance along the entire torque-speed characteristic curve of the motors under test.

Lifetime is very important to wireless sensor networks since most sensors are equipped with non-rechargeable batteries. Therefore, energy and delay are critical issues for the research of sensor networks that have limited lifetime. Due to the uncertainties in execution time of some tasks, this paper models each varied execution time as a probabilistic random variable with the consideration of applications' performance requirements to solve the MAP (Mode Assignment with Probability) problem. Using probabilistic design, we propose an optimal algorithm to minimize the total energy consumption while satisfying the timing constraint with a guaranteed confidence probability. The experimental results show that our approach achieves significant energy saving than previous work. For example, our algorithm achieves an average improvement of 32.6% on total energy consumption.

In this paper, we propose a Maritime Underwater Navigation System (MUNS) for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). The proposed MUNS has a hierarchical architecture comprising of a Wide Area Planner (WAP) and a Local Area Planner (LAP). MUNS is intended to be a plug-and-play module to provide obstacle avoidance and path planning capabilities to existing UUV platforms thereby expanding operational capabilities in cluttered and littoral environments. MUNS is designed to be flexible and to support a variety of tasks including point-to-point moves, object inspection, contour tracking, and region scanning/searching. The performance of MUNS has been validated through extensive simulation studies.

This paper presents a methodology for modeling the high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET/Junction-Barrier Schottky (JBS) diode power modules. The electrical model of an actual high-voltage SiC MOSFET/JBS module has been obtained using computer-aided electromagnetic analysis and verified through measurements. A circuit simulation model of a 2 kV, 5 A 4-H SiC MOSFET has also been built based on Hefner MOSFET model and the published experimental data. The device and package models are then combined together in the circuit simulation of a double-pulse test. The simulation results obtained provide good insight into the fast switching behavior and parametric dependencies of the paralleled SiC dice, which will aid in the module physical layout and gate driver design, as well as switching and conduction loss analysis.

In this paper a new idea to solve the traveling salesman problem is introduced. The idea is categorized within meta-heuristic algorithms and is based on a normal wise human-being thinking method. Starting from an arbitrary starting point, three factors are considered to generate a score vector by which the next position is selected. Distance from the non-visited points, successful previous experiments, and a randomly changing factor are the components that make the score vector. The effect of each factor can be adjusted by a weighting parameter. The algorithm is implemented and tested on many small (less than 100 cities) benchmarks. The primary surprising results obtained by this soft computing approach, in comparison to many other recently developed methods, turn a light on its bright perspective to be known as an efficient simple solution to the problem.

A globally stabilizing decentralized output-feedback controller is proposed for a general class of nonlinear interconnected large-scale systems. The subsystem interconnections and the dynamics of each subsystem feature both parametric and functional uncertainty. The controller design is based on a general high-gain scaling technique that utilizes arbitrary powers (instead of requiring successive powers) of the high-gain parameter with the powers chosen to satisfy certain inequalities depending on system nonlinearities. The scaling induces a weak-Cascading Upper Diagonal Dominance (w-CUDD) structure on the dynamics and allows relaxation of the cascading dominance assumption on upper diagonal terms. Disturbance attenuation properties of the proposed decentralized controller are also investigated.

Intentional islanding (referred to a micro-grid) holds promise to improve power system reliability and power quality due to its more flexible control. To operate intentional islanding successfully, more efficient and robust control methods are required. A new concept is developed as an enhancement to the application of optimal load shedding for corrective control to support an islanded power system. The new proposal is comprised of two major stages in which one nonlinear optimization problem and one linear integer optimization problem are formulated. Numerical simulations conducted on a 15-bus system have demonstrated the performance of the new algorithm.

The frequency monitoring network (FNET) provides a low-cost, easily deployable method for wide-area monitoring. FNET has the capability to realize long term, high density and continuous monitoring of large interconnected power systems. In effect, there are potentials for ground-breaking research on wide-area monitoring and control. In this paper, low frequency oscillations in the Eastern Interconnection (EI) are analyzed based on generation trips detected by FNET in 2007. The oscillation data were selected in a way such that their locations are distributed throughout the EI system. In addition, some preliminary statistical analysis of the dynamic characteristics is presented. Through illustrating the control method of system stability, it is shown that the analysis of oscillation mode shape distribution is very important. As an example, some preliminary simulation results are provided for the control of system low-frequency oscillation due to transmission line faults or other changes in system topology.

Existing wavelet-based image denoising techniques all assume a probability model of wavelet coefficients that has zero mean, such as zero-mean Laplacian, Gaussian, or generalized Gaussian distributions. While such a zero-mean probability model fits a wavelet subband well, in areas of edges and textures the distribution of wavelet coefficients exhibits a significant bias. We propose a context modeling technique to estimate the expectation of each wavelet coefficient conditioned on the local signal structure. The estimated expectation is then used to shift the probability model of wavelet coefficient back to zero. This bias removal technique can significantly improve the performance of existing wavelet-based image denoisers.

A highly resolved tree of phenotypes (TOP) derived from genomic data reveals important relationships between heterogeneous diseases at molecular level. We propose a stability analysis guided learning method that produces a reproducible yet non-binary TOP using high-dimensional finite sample size genomic data. Experimental results show the superior capability of the proposed method in learning TOP with balanced stability and descriptiveness, as compared to conventional tree learning schemes.
