Purpose: To assess longitudinal and geographic variation in perceived discrimination from ages 10–11 to 13–14 years in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development cohort, and to examine how these experiences are shaped by contextual factors such as neighborhood segregation and state-level racial bias. Methods: Data were drawn from the longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (release 5.1), analyzing years 1, 2, and 4, corresponding to approximate ages 10–11, 11–12, and 13–14 years. Perceived discrimination was assessed using items adapted from the Perceived Discrimination Scale. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined how perceived discrimination varied across time, demographic factors, and contextual variables, with models weighted using American Community Survey raked propensity scores to ensure national representativeness. Results: Black, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and Other/Multiracial non-Hispanic youth showed increasing trajectories of perceived discrimination over time, while Native American and White non-Hispanic youth exhibited decreasing trends. Significant geographic variation emerged, with Black youth reporting elevated discrimination across all regions, particularly in the West and South. Youth living in areas with concentrated poor Black households and in states with high anti-Black bias reported higher discrimination. Youth with immigrant backgrounds generally reported higher levels of perceived discrimination across most racial/ethnic groups. Discussion: Perceived discrimination follows distinct developmental trajectories during early adolescence that vary significantly by race, ethnicity, geography, and structural context. These findings highlight the critical need for targeted interventions during this developmental period, particularly for Black, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and Other/Multiracial youth. Advancing human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocyte (hiPSC-CM) technology will lead to significant progress ranging from disease modeling, to drug discovery, to regenerative tissue engineering. Yet, alongside these potential opportunities comes a critical challenge: attaining mature hiPSC-CM tissues. At present, there are multiple techniques to promote maturity of hiPSC-CMs including physical platforms and cell culture protocols. However, when it comes to making quantitative comparisons of functional behavior, there are limited options for reliably and reproducibly computing functional metrics that are suitable for direct cross-system comparison. In addition, the current standard functional metrics obtained from time-lapse images of cardiac microbundle contraction reported in the field (i.e., post forces, average tissue stress) do not take full advantage of the available information present in these data (i.e., full-field tissue displacements and strains). Thus, we present "MicroBundleCompute, " a computational framework for automatic quantification of morphology-based mechanical metrics from movies of cardiac microbundles. Briefly, this computational framework offers tools for automatic tissue segmentation, tracking, and analysis of brightfield and phase contrast movies of beating cardiac microbundles. It is straightforward to implement, runs without user intervention, requires minimal input parameter setting selection, and is computationally inexpensive. In this paper, we describe the methods underlying this computational framework, show the results of our extensive validation studies, and demonstrate the utility of exploring heterogeneous tissue deformations and strains as functional metrics. Purpose: Statistical models for predicting lung cancer have the potential to facilitate earlier diagnosis of malignancy and avoid invasive workup of benign disease. Many models have been published, but comparative studies of their utility in different clinical settings in which patients would arguably most benefit are scarce. Materials and Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated promising predictive models for lung cancer prediction in three clinical settings: lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography, incidentally detected pulmonary nodules, and nodules deemed suspicious enough to warrant a biopsy. We leveraged 9 cohorts (n=898, 896, 882, 219, 364, 117, 131, 115, 373) from multiple institutions to assess the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of validated models including logistic regressions on clinical variables and radiologist nodule characterizations, artificial intelligence on chest CTs, longitudinal imaging AI, and multi-modal approaches. We implemented each model from their published literature, re-training the models if necessary, and curated each cohort from primary data sources. Results: We observed that model performance varied greatly across clinical use cases. No single predictive model emerged as a clear winner across all cohorts, but certain models excelled in specific clinical contexts. Single timepoint chest CT AI performed well in lung screening, but struggled to generalize to other clinical settings. Longitudinal imaging and multimodal models demonstrated comparatively promising performance on incidentally-detected nodules. However, when applied to nodules that underwent biopsy, all models underperformed. Conclusion: These results underscore the strengths and limitations of 8 validated predictive models and highlight promising directions towards personalized, noninvasive lung cancer diagnosis. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Graph signal processing (GSP) is a prominent framework for analyzing signals on non-Euclidean domains. The graph Fourier transform (GFT) uses the combinatorial graph Laplacian matrix to reveal the spectral decomposition of signals in the graph frequency domain. However, a common challenge in applying GSP methods is that in many scenarios the underlying graph of a system is unknown. A solution in such cases is to construct the unobserved graph from available data, which is commonly referred to as graph or network inference. Although different graph inference methods exist, they are restricted to learning from either smooth graph signals or simple additive Gaussian noise. Other types of noisy data, such as discrete counts or binary digits, are rather common in real-world applications, yet are underexplored in graph inference. In this paper, we propose a versatile graph inference framework for learning from graph signals corrupted by exponential family noise. Our framework generalizes previous methods from continuous smooth graph signals to various data types. We propose an alternating algorithm that jointly estimates the graph Laplacian and the unobserved smooth representation from the noisy signals. We also extend our approach to include an offset variable which models different levels of variation of the nodes. Since real-world graph signals are frequently non-independent and temporally correlated, we further adapt our original setting to a timevertex formulation. We demonstrate on synthetic and real-world data that our new algorithms outperform competing Laplacian estimation methods that suffer from noise model mismatch. © 2025 IEEE.

A Normal Distribution Transform-Based Radar Odometry Designed For Scanning and Automotive Radars

Existing radar sensors can be classified into automotive and scanning radars. While most radar odometry (RO) methods are only designed for a specific type of radar, our RO method adapts to both scanning and automotive radars. Our RO is simple yet effective, where the pipeline consists of thresholding, probabilistic submap building, and an NDT-based radar scan matching. The proposed RO has been tested on two public radar datasets: the Oxford Radar RobotCar dataset and the nuScenes dataset, which provide scanning and automotive radar data respectively. The results show that our approach surpasses state-of-the-art RO using either automotive or scanning radar by reducing translational error by 51% and 30%, respectively, and rotational error by 17% and 29%, respectively. Besides, we show that our RO achieves centimeter-level accuracy as lidar odometry, and automotive and scanning RO have similar accuracy. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

TargetNet: Functional microRNA target prediction with deep neural networks

Motivation: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play pivotal roles in gene expression regulation by binding to target sites of messenger RNAs (mRNAs). While identifying functional targets of miRNAs is of utmost importance, their prediction remains a great challenge. Previous computational algorithms have major limitations. They use conservative candidate target site (CTS) selection criteria mainly focusing on canonical site types, rely on laborious and time-consuming manual feature extraction, and do not fully capitalize on the information underlying miRNA-CTS interactions. Results: In this paper, we introduce TargetNet, a novel deep learning-based algorithm for functional miRNA target prediction. To address the limitations of previous approaches, TargetNet has three key components: (1) relaxed CTS selection criteria accommodating irregularities in the seed region, (2) a novel miRNA-CTS sequence encoding scheme incorporating extended seed region alignments, and (3) a deep residual network-based prediction model. The proposed model was trained with miRNA-CTS pair datasets and evaluated with miRNA-mRNA pair datasets. TargetNet advances the previous state-of-theart algorithms used in functional miRNA target classification. Single photon detectors (SPDs) [1, 2] are essential technology in quantum science, quantum network, biology, and advanced imaging [3-5]. To detect the small quantum of energy carried in a photon, conventional SPDs rely on energy excitation across either a semiconductor bandgap or superconducting gap. While the energy gap suppresses the false-positive error, it also sets an energy scale that can limit the detection efficiency of lower energy photons and spectral bandwidth of the SPD [6-8]. Here, we demonstrate an orthogonal approach to detect single near-infrared photons using graphene calorimeters [9-13]. By exploiting the extremely low heat capacity of the pseudo-relativistic electrons in graphene near its charge neutrality point [14], we observe an electron temperature rise up to ∼2 K using a hybrid Josephson junction. Ultrafast (femtosecond pulse) laser irradiation provides unique laser-material interactions associated with high instantaneous electric fields and short timescales that lead to a nonequilibrium state between excited electrons and phonons. These interactions result in material modifications that differ from conventional chemical, physical, and thermal processing at much longer timescales, and an opportunity to address material and device processing challenges associated with wide-bandgap materials such as Ga2O3. In this work, we explore ultrafast laser irradiation (Ti:sapphire, 150 fs pulse width) of bulk (010) Sn-doped β-Ga2O3 under two different wavelengths, fundamental (780 nm) and frequency-doubled (390 nm), and a range of laser fluences. We identified a regime for laser-induced damage threshold resulting in material ablation, thermally-induced straight crack formation, and recrystallization. Rastering on a β-Ga2O3 substrate created surface nanostructures including laser-induced periodic surface structures at a high spatial frequency (period ∼250 nm). These highly aligned periodic structures can be controlled by laser polarization and wavelength, presenting a means for direct writing of surface nanostructures. Enhanced atomic movement associated with a transient metallic state can provide a means for intentional generation of point defects via the laser irradiation. These point defects may offer a means of electrical modification, which was demonstrated as more than five orders of the magnitude enhancement of lateral conductance on rastered β-Ga2O3. Admission of new students in 2019 through zoning still faces many obstacles, one of which is the readiness of the application to determine the distance of a student's house from the nearest recommended school. The purpose of this study is to provide better recommendations regarding the shortest and most accurate distance in the zoning system for admission of junior high school students in Malang by using the Generate and Test algorithm without having to do it manually or using other map applications. The results of this study indicate that the distance value obtained from the haversine formula corresponds to the original distance measured through a zoning application that applies the Generate and Test algorithm to measure the closest distance from the student's location. The recommended distance is given through a process of repetition and comparison of nodes. By using the generate and test algorithm for the search process the shortest distance from the user to the destination school has an average time of 6.2MB, the level of accuracy is the same as the Haversine calculation. © 2020 IEEE.
