In this paper we consider the problem of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing in the downlink of cognitive radio (CR) networks while simultaneously keeping interference levels at primary user (PU) receivers (RXs) below an acceptable threshold with uncertain channel state information available at the CR base-station (BS). We optimize the beam-forming vectors at the CR BS so that the worst user SINR is maximized and transmit power constraints at the CR BS and interference constraints at the PU RXs are satisfied. With uncertainties in the channel bounded by a Euclidean ball, the semidefinite program (SDP) modeling the balancing problem is solved using the recently developed convex iteration technique without relaxing the rank constraints. Numerical simulations are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique in comparison to known approximations.

This paper presents a comparison among different strategies to coordinate the use of heterogeneous wireless sensors aimed for area surveillance. The heterogeneity among the sensor nodes is related to their sensing and mobility capabilities. The goal of the strategies is to provide coordination among the different nodes, in order to make the wireless sensor network perform its missions with higher efficiency. Strategies combine advantages of bio-inspired and utility-based approaches to coordination. Simulations of scenarios with different characteristics were performed and the results are compared and analyzed. © 2010 IEEE.

Methods that measure energy balance accurately in real time represent promising avenues to address the obesity epidemic. We developed an electronic food diary on a mobile phone that includes an energy balance visualization and computes and displays the difference between energy intake from food entries and energy expenditure from a multiple-sensor device that provides objective estimates of energy expenditure in real time. A geographic information system dataset containing locations associated with activity and eating episodes is integrated with an ArcPad mapping application on the phone to provide users with a visual display of food sources and locations associated with physical activity within their proximal environment. This innovative tool captures peoples' movement through space and time under free-living conditions and could potentially have many health-related applications in the future. © Diabetes Technology Society.

Selecting the best relay among all the relays ready to cooperate saves system resources and utilizes the available bandwidth more efficiently compared to the regular all-relay cooperation. This scheme also achieves the same or better system performance in terms of outage probability and diversity order. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the best relay selection scheme with fixed gain relays operating in non-identical Nakagami-m fading channels. We first derive the probability density function (pdf) using an upper bounded end-to-end signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the relay link. Using this pdf, we derive some key performance parameters for the system. The analytical results presented are verified through simulations. The results show that the best relay selection scheme outperforms the regular cooperation.

The effort of "Smart Grid" is to modernize grid infrastructure and build-in intelligence to power grids and delivery systems, and their interfaces to customer premises. However, the perspectives range from an emphasis on infrastructure to an emphasis on new paradigm-shifting applications. Alternatively, the smart grid can be thought of as the advanced information technologies that enable the desired analytical applications. As a general understanding, we believe that Smart Grid needs to integrate power system analysis, computing and economics to enhance grid reliability, efficiency, and security, and contributes to the climate change strategic goal. In this Supersession, the analytics that empowers smart grid applications is discussed;and the practical implementation and integration challenges will be presented.

The emergence of low-cost sensing architectures for diverse modalities has made it possible to deploy sensor networks that acquire large amounts of very high-dimensional data. To cope with such a data deluge, manifold models are often developed that provide a powerful theoretical and algorithmic framework for capturing the intrinsic structure of data governed by a low-dimensional set of ***, these models do not typically take into account dependencies among multiple sensors. We thus propose a new joint manifold framework for data ensembles that exploits such dependencies. We show that joint manifold structure can lead to improved performance for manifold learning. Additionally, we leverage recent results concerning random projections of manifolds to formulate a universal, network-scalable dimensionality reduction scheme that efficiently fuses the data from all sensors. Brain Machine Interface (BMI) systems demand real-time spike sorting to instantaneously decode the spike trains of simultaneously recorded cortical neurons. Real-time spike sorting, however, requires extensive computational power that is not feasible to implement in implantable BMI architectures, thereby requiring transmission of high-bandwidth raw neural data to an external computer. In this work, we describe a miniaturized, low power, programmable hardware module capable of performing this task within the resource constraints of an implantable chip. The module computes a sparse representation of the spike waveforms followed by “smart” thresholding. This cascade restricts the sparse representation to a subset of projections that preserve the discriminative features of neuron-specific spike waveforms. In addition, it further reduces telemetry bandwidth making it feasible to wirelessly transmit only the important biological information to the outside world, thereby improving the efficiency, practicality and viability of BMI systems in clinical applications.

There are many university initiatives that focus on technology-based solutions to address the needs of marginalized communities. The technology-based solutions are intended to be economically and socially sustainable. These endeavors are usually well-meaning, creatively designed, and enthusiastically deployed, but do not achieve the sustainable impact envisioned at the outset of the projects. To addresses these shortcomings, at The Pennsylvania State University we are applying three key tenets of systems thinking to our humanitarian engineering and social entrepreneurial ventures: 1) employing regulation via feedback to ensure that the system is actually working;2) defining systems by their interactions and their parts;and 3) understanding that systems exhibit multi-finality. The concept of multi-finality refers to (designing) a system where the individual actors (inputs), the subsystems, and their interactions, all meet their own goals while the system as a whole also meets its goals. In this paper, we lay the framework for the application of specific systems thinking concepts to increase the probability of success of global development ventures. We provide simple yet compelling examples from two different ventures to illustrate the power of systems thinking to train innovative problem-solvers and increase the probability of success of technology-based social entrepreneurial ventures in Africa. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

Ion channel is the regulatory mechanism for electrical activity in pancreatic islet cells through stimulus-secretion coupling. Changes in membrane potential are regulated by the glucose concentration-dependent ion channel activities. The alteration of glucose concentration is linked to the open probability of ATP-sensitive K+ channels by insulin secretion. At the meantime, the change of glucose concentration can cause the reorganization of the membrane as well as the cytoskeleton, resulting in the change of cellular stiffness. By using an integrated AFM and cell manipulation system, we were able to measure the cell stiffness and structural change simultaneously upon the glucose stimulation. The cell stiffness increases substantially in a dosage-dependent manner after stimulation by real time AFM nanoindentation measurement. Structurally, the cell height decrease dynamically with the glucose concentration increase. Therefore we have a unique Bio Marker to characterize the ion channel activity using different modalities. This result indicates that the open and close of ion channel would lead to the change of membrane structure and thus the cell body exhibits a different cellular stiffness. The study will enhance our understanding of pancreatic islet cell stimulus coupling and insulin secretion. © 2010 IEEE.
