The paper employed some independently developed sensors based on the Octopus X platform to build a Zigbee-based Sensor Networks. Also, we implemented a Location-aware living environment by deploying the developed Zigee-based sensor. Besides, through the created window console interface, the sensed data can be transmitted and transformed to the database for further utilized. Moreover, by the devised Web interface, the update request data can be observed efficiently and responded effectively to any situations.

This paper develops a new class of algorithms for signal recovery in the distributed compressive sensing (DCS) framework. DCS exploits both intra-signal and inter-signal correlations through the concept of joint sparsity to further reduce the number of measurements required for recovery. DCS is well-suited for sensor network applications due to its universality, computational asymmetry, tolerance to quantization and noise, and robustness to measurement loss. In this paper we propose recovery algorithms for the sparse common and innovation joint sparsity model. Our approach leads to a class of efficient algorithms, the Texas Hold 'Em algorithms, which are scalable both in terms of communication bandwidth and computational complexity.

Compressive sensing (CS) is an emerging approach for acquisition of signals having a sparse or compressible representation in some basis. While CS literature has mostly focused on problems involving 1-D and 2-D signals, many important applications involve signals that are multidimensional. We propose the use of Kronecker product matrices in CS for two purposes. First, we can use such matrices as sparsifying bases that jointly model the different types of structure present in the signal. Second, the measurement matrices used in distributed measurement settings can be easily expressed as Kronecker products. This new formulation enables the derivation of analytical bounds for sparse approximation and CS recovery of multidimensional signals.

In the fall of 2009, a college of engineering and applied science at a public, Rocky Mountain region university embarked on a new inclusive excellence initiative called Broadening Opportunity through Leadership & Diversity (BOLD). The BOLD Center is a new K-16 organizational structure to increase the performance, representation and retention through graduation of students who are underrepresented in engineering, including women, students of color, low income and first generation college attendees. A BOLD Center focus of concern is the declining retention rate of women that has dipped below that of men recently in our College. A survey consisting of 41 questions was distributed to all undergraduate engineering women in the college that incorporates scales from the Assessing Women in engineering (AWE) assessment and from the Academic Pathways of People Learning engineering Survey (APPLES). Five research questions were posed in the survey design: • Do women express a loss of interest during their program? • Is there a chilly climate for women in the college? • Do women?s self-efficacy levels change during the program? • Do academic performance levels play a role in women?s retention in engineering? • Do women have an adequate support structure in the college? The survey generated 116 responses from 2 solicitations, with women students represented from every major across all four undergraduate years. An unintended outcome was that the sample largely consists of women with high grade point averages. Thus, this paper offers insight on top performing women?s self-efficacy and their views on the college climate, the benefits from various support systems - advising, mentoring, social and financial - and the existing programming and initiatives that can play a role in their achievements. The results indicate that women students are interested and efficacious with respect to obtaining an engineering degree, and that the college climate is, on average, warm and accepting. Howev

The University of Connecticut, department of Biomedical engineering has developed a device to be used by patients to collect physiological data outside of a medical facility. This device facilitates modes of data collection that would be expensive, inconvenient, or impossible to obtain by traditional means within the medical facility. Data can be collected on specific days, at specific times, during specific activities, or while traveling. The device uses biosensors to obtain information such as pulse oximetry (SpO2), heart rate, electrocardiogram (ECG), non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), and weight which are sent via Bluetooth to an interactive monitoring device. The data can then be downloaded to an electronic storage device or transmitted to a company server, physician's office, or hospital. The data collection software is usable on any computer device with Bluetooth capability, thereby removing the need for special hardware for the monitoring device and reducing the total cost of the system. The modular biosensors can be added or removed as needed without changing the monitoring device software. The user is prompted by easy-to-follow instructions written in non-technical language. Additional features, such as screens with large buttons and large text, allow for use by those with limited vision or limited motor skills.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.

Integration of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots with epitaxial semiconductor materials offers the possibility of a wide variety of new device structures. In this work, wafer bonding processes for layered GaN/Quantum Dots/GaN structures are described. Bonding is achieved by thermal reorganization of bidentate ligand thiophenethiol which initially caps the CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. Annealing temperature dependent bond strength feature is characterized. Maximum bond strength is achieved after annealing at 350°C. Effect of annealing on quantum dot photoluminescence is also investigated.

Variability of single-unit neural recordings can significantly affect the overall performance achieved by brain machine interfaces (BMI). In this paper, we present a novel technique to adapt a linear filter commonly used in BMI to compensate for loss of neurons from the recorded neural ensemble, thus minimizing loss in performance. We simulate the gains achieved by this technique using a model of the learning process during closed-loop BMI operation. This simulation suggests that we can adapt to the loss of 24% of the neurons controlling a BMI with only 13% drop in performance.
