In this paper, we investigate a dual-hop opportunistic decode-and-forward relaying scheme where the source may or not be able to communicate directly with the destination. We first derive statistics based on exact probability density function (PDF) of each hop. Then, the PDFs are used to determine closed-form outage probability expression for a transmission rate R. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic outage performance and the diversity order is deduced. Unlike existing works where the analysis focused on high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, such results are important to enable the designers to take decisions regarding practical systems that operate at low SNR regime. We show that performance simulation results coincide with our analytical results under practical assumption of unbalanced hops.

Ion channel is the regulatory mechanism for electrical activity in pancreatic islet cells through stimulus-secretion coupling. Changes in membrane potential are regulated by the glucose concentration-dependent ion channel activities. The alteration of glucose concentration is linked to the open probability of ATP-sensitive K + channels by insulin secretion. At the meantime, the change of glucose concentration can cause the reorganization of the membrane as well as the cytoskeleton, resulting in the change of cellular stiffness. By using an integrated AFM and cell manipulation system, we were able to measure the cell stiffness and structural change simultaneously upon the glucose stimulation. The cell stiffness increases substantially in a dosage-dependent manner after stimulation by real time AFM nanoindentation measurement. Structurally, the cell height decrease dynamically with the glucose concentration increase. Therefore we have a unique Bio Marker to characterize the ion channel activity using different modalities. This result indicates that the open and close of ion channel would lead to the change of membrane structure and thus the cell body exhibits a different cellular stiffness. The study will enhance our understanding of pancreatic islet cell stimulus coupling and insulin secretion.

For the first time, we studied the applicability of a conditioning-based model to a heterogeneous data set composed of expression values for microRNA, total mRNA and polysomal mRNA resulting from experiments about two dietary contexts. The results suggest that some of the microRNAs are likely to be involved in the regulation of a large set of genes and not just their putative targets. Furthermore, the regulatory activities of intestinal microRNA appear to be dependent on the sub-cellular location of mRNA within the cell.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches.
