The paper addresses Medical Hand Drawing Management System architecture and implementation. In the system, we developed four modules: hand drawing management module; patient medical records query module; hand drawing editing and upload module; hand drawing query module. The system adapts windows-based applications and encompasses web pages by *** hosting mechanism under web services platforms. The hand drawings implemented as files are stored in a FTP server. The file names with associated data, e.g. patient identification, drawing physician, access rights, etc. are reposited in a database. The modules can be conveniently embedded, integrated into any system. Therefore, the system possesses the hand drawing features to support daily medical operations, effectively improve healthcare qualities as well. Moreover, the system includes the printing capability to achieve a complete, computerized medical document process. In summary, the system allows web-based applications to facilitate the graphic processes for healthcare operations.

This paper presents how a senior capstone project can be utilized to build partnerships between the academia and several companies representing key industries in modern robotics technology. The project can be described as designing a portable robotic workcell for industry to showcase state-of-the-art equipment and technologies in robotics. The industrial sponsor for this project is Applied Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) located in Orion, Michigan. AMT plans to use the workcell for demonstrating current robotics technology in tradeshows, industrial open houses and/or robotics conferences. In addition, the workcell is to be used as a platform to provide training to engineers working in robotics industry on robot programming, machine vision and systems integration. The small size, flexible design and durability make the workcell appealing to many other applications in robotics engineering. An engineering senior project design team composed of one computer engineer, two electrical engineers and two manufacturing engineering technologists at Lake Superior State University has worked on this project as their capstone design requirement through the 2007-2008 academic year. Lake Superior State University offers ABET accredited programs in computer, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as in manufacturing engineering technology. Robotics and automation is a degree option in all majors. The capstone senior design project is an integral part of all the degree programs and provides a real-life experience for the engineering senior students. The two-semester course has been an important tool to introduce students to soft skills such as project management, communications, engineering economics, and engineering ethics. In recent years, the growing integration of economies and societies around the world has required that graduates of all institutions and disciplines be prepared to work in an economy that is now best seen as essentially international. Global markets are dictating the way that national economies around the world design, distribute, and consume goods and services. Engineers are in the midst of this dynamic development. Most large engineering projects currently require multi-national teams of multi-disciplinary professionals to work together and, therefore, a better understanding of the global economy, communication skills, cultural awareness, and interpersonal skills are critical to engineers. In this context, universities around the world are increasingly moving to establish international partnerships in their education and research programs. This growing trend is fuelled by many factors, including the need to give students the education they require to work in an increasingly globalized world. In this paper, the authors discuss the key concepts of an engineering educational consortium between the United States and Brazil, formed with the objective to establish a sustainable exchange of undergraduate students in engineering between the U.S. and Brazil. The consortium is identifying the main barriers that currently prevent the existence of exchange of engineering students between the U.S. and Brazil that is consistent with the geographic location and the geopolitical importance of these two countries, so that these barriers can be addressed during the program. The consortium is focusing engineering education in the disciplines of electricalengineering, mechanical engineering, and electricalengineering technology, with emphasis in the area of renewable and alternative sources of energy. Biology has played a key role in influencing the development and optimization of a significant variety of sensors that provide engineers new ideas for improvements to current technology, new sensor technology, and potential sensor miniaturization. Biological systems, such as plants and insects offer significant methods of flight, imaging, sensing, adaptation to environment, and locomotion. The biological domain provides inspiration at many levels, such as cellular, organism, and species. A biological system is any biological organism, organism subsystem, or portion of an organism that is observed to exist. Abstraction of the biological system using analogical reasoning allows an engineering designer to look for a specific solution through mimicry in an approach to biology-inspired design. The analogous approach relies on the idea of figuring out the basis of overall biological system and of each part or subsystem that achieves the overall goal.
