The Tablet PC is gaining in popularity as a digital teaching tool in engineering education. Instructors report its use as a flexible platform for seamless interweaving of lectures, software demonstrations, web access and other classroom needs: a single device functionally equivalent to a blackboard, computer, computer data projector and overhead projector. Much of the emphasis to date, however, has been on the instructor's sole use of the Tablet PC: during the class period students still mostly rely on paper/pencil or traditional workstations. This paper presents instructors' and students' initial impressions on the use of Tablet PCs within selected courses in different engineering programs at the University of the Pacific. As with any technological teaching tool, Tablet PCs have their advantages and disadvantages. Their main instructional advantage lies in their flexibility. Within the same class period, students can use the 'tablet' mode for annotating course notes using different colors or for developing a design, then link to the internet to gather data and information, and change to 'PC mode to run a model and incorporate model results into their class notes. The simple feature that allows the screen to be oriented in different directions allows students to readily share their work and ideas with others, facilitating use of active learning group exercises in classes. One main advantage identified by students was the ability to organize and archive their class notes and associated materials. Despite some administrative issues such as boot-up time at the start of class and network connectivity issues from time to time, Tablet PCs were found to be appropriate for use in certain engineering courses and they can serve as effective multi-functional teaching and learning tools. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

In the spring of 2007, Worcester Polytechnic Institute introduced a BS degree program in Robotics engineering. The degree program is a collaborative effort, involving faculty from the departments of computer Science, electrical and computer engineering and Mechanical engineering. The motivation for establishing the program is two-fold: needs of the rapidly growing robotics industry and student interest as demonstrated by numerous high school robotics competitions. The program relies in part on already existing courses, but the core curriculum consists of five new "unified robotics engineering" courses. Although Robotics engineering is not recognized as a distinct engineering field by ABET, the program is designed to be accreditable under the "General engineering" ABET criteria. While the program is less than a year old, there is already significant student interest. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Through the team's community of scholars, this paper describes the pedagogical details of an on-going NSF department of Undergraduate Education (DUE) project that commenced in the fall 2004 semester. Fostering deep learning, this multi-year project offers a new active-learning and hands-on laboratory program that is interdisciplinary, in which engineering, geoscience, and meteorology students are encouraged to actively participate. As discussed in a report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, about 1/3 of the nation's $10 trillion dollar economy is influenced by weather. Storm cells, tornadoes, and hazardous weather cause damage and loss that could be minimized through enhanced radar and longer warning lead times. To study these topics, the program has generated a unique, interdisciplinary research-oriented learning environment that will train future engineers and meteorologists in the full set of competencies needed to take raw radar data and transform it into meaningful interpretations of weather phenomena. The heart of the program is the development, implementation and refinement of a set of several undergraduate courses and laboratory modules that are offered by the Schools of Meteorology and electrical & computer engineering, that provides hands-on experiences in the special knowledge and skills necessary for organizing real-time weather data, improving and preparing that data for display, and interpreting its meteorological and scientific significance. In addition, programs for middle school teachers have been generated for the purpose of increasing their students' interest in science and engineering prior to entering college. The principal investigators have partnered with a major statewide climatology office during the summers of 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 to adapt and implement project materials directly to middle school teachers via its Earthstorm outreach program. Undergraduate computer and electrical engineering programs often partition the curriculum into several courses based on related topics taught in isolation. Students are expected to synthesize their knowledge in a senior design project. It is the authors' experience that students often struggle during their senior design project since they have not gained the appropriate knowledge or mastered necessary skills needed to work on a significant or team-based engineering design project. Specifically, students need to be able to define system requirements, partition the design into subcomponents, design, build, test, and verify that the system requirements have been met. The authors have enhanced and implemented three courses to develop system engineering knowledge and skills that better prepare students for their senior design experience. This paper gives an overview and lists the learning outcomes for each of these courses and includes some examples of laboratory projects that are used to meet these learning outcomes. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper presents a project-based laboratory course on electronics design and manufacturing. The goal of this course is to provide lower-division engineering students a hands-on experience involving actual printed circuit board (PCB) design, layout, fabrication, assembly, and testing. Through project-based learning, students not only learn technical skills in designing and manufacturing an electronic device, but also develop their project management and communication skills early in their course of study at the university. The course outline and examples of the student projects are presented in this paper as well as project evaluations and students' feedback. This paper also presents the selection of a PCB design tool for the lowerdivision electronics manufacturing course. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Conformal P-N junctions in macroporous silicon for photovoltaic energy conversion

We report on the fabrication of a macroporous silicon diode that successfully operates in a photovoltaic mode of energy conversion. Typical device structures are fabricated on 4″, Cz grown, <100>, p-type, 5 – 30 Ω-cm, Si substrates and make use of random or pre-patterned macroporous silicon films up to 100 μm thick with pores ∼1 μm in diameter and a center-to-center pore spacing of 2.5 μm. Phosphorous dopants are introduced throughout the porous silicon region with a newly adapted technique based on proximity rapid thermal diffusion. This development effort has enhanced the uniformity of dopant diffusion into the pores and subsequently improved device performance. The resulting p-n diode within the porous silicon is of a three-dimensional nature and exhibits an extremely high internal surface area up to ∼6690 cm 2 /cm 3 . To our knowledge, this is the first use of such a technique to fabricate conformal, three-dimensional p-n junctions for photovoltaic applications. The large internal surface area of this diode makes it applicable to next generation photovoltaics. Moreover, the porous silicon within this device is not simply an antireflection coating; rather it is a light trapping medium that has the ability to become a large surface area diode and can serve as a host matrix for photoactive compounds. A continuing challenge in engineering in higher education is that of professional equity regarding opportunity for advancement and job satisfaction due to differences in gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability and other factors. Because there are more women and persons of color visible within engineering faculties and administrations than ever before, casual observers might conclude that significant progress has been made in creating an equitable climate in academia. A preponderance of recent studies, however, demonstrate that while women and individuals from other underrepresented groups have gained access to some faculty and administrative positions, this has not necessarily translated into consistent patterns of success through all levels of academic hierarchies and leadership positions. For example, some universities do a good job of recruiting and hiring women faculty and faculty of color, yet beyond this, both groups are consistently underrepresented at certain levels of faculty administration, such as department chair, dean, and endowed chairs. 1-7 In 2005, Boise State University, a mid-sized, metropolitan university, administered a Campus Climate Survey to gain an understanding of how these national trends presented themselves on a particular campus, with the long-term goal of transforming campus climate and culture to enhance opportunities for underrepresented groups. In general, between two-thirds and three-quarters of the faculty who responded to the survey reported that they have been treated fairly and equitably while at the university. The following analysis sheds light on the approximately one-quarter to one-third of faculty members who did not feel that they had been equitably treated while also focusing on responses from the science and engineering faculty in particular. Additionally, this paper explores ways in which engineering and science departments and universities can use climate data to inform strategic plans of action. © America

The Cal Poly/Allan Hancock team is developing a learning module that will allow all lower division engineering students to design, fabricate, assemble, and test an electronic system implemented on a printed circuit board (PCB). All the services necessary to perform this laboratory experiment will be provided with low-cost vendors available on the. The learning module is being developed so that it can be integrated into the existing electrical engineering lower division courses that are required by all engineering students. The laboratory learning module will use operational amplifiers (op amp), resistors, capacitors and other common electronic components to study the theory of op am circuits, and to apply these circuits to the interfacing of electronic signals with the physical world. The learning module will replace two existing laboratory experiments on op amps with a five week exercise. After lecture on the theory, the five week exercise will consist of one week of laboratory introducing the PCB technology and the PCB design tool. Outside of class, the students will submit their designs (after instructor review) to a vendor for fabrication, and order their parts. After about three weeks, the students are expected to have received the fabricated PCB and to have assembled the parts on the PCB. On the last week, they will test their board and perform the experiment. Thus, this learning module will be compatible with current course/lab schedules, and could be conveniently incorporated into an existing course/lab to meet and extend the existing laboratory learning objectives. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.
