A model of the neuronal reciprocal inhibitory oscillator was developed in this study by use of an entirely electronic platform. Neuronal Oscillators were widely studied in previous research due to their important roll as central pattern generators. Our model consisted of two electronic components, the neuron emulator for modeling the electrical activities of a neuron and the artificial synapse for mimicking a synaptic connection between two neurons. The typical bursting patterns of action potentials were demonstrated by connecting two Neuron Emulators with the Artificial Synapse. These electronic devices provided a unique hardware platform for studying reciprocal inhibitory oscillators and other neuronal networks. © 2006 IEEE.

The microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method is capable of synthesizing various forms of carbon allotropes such as diamond, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and diamondlike carbon (DLC) while varying the growth parameters or utilizing substrate coated with catalytic thin film. In this article, needlelike carbon nanostructures (CNs) were synthesized utilizing high power (5 kW) and high working pressure (120 Torr) MPCVD on a thin catalytic film of nickel with a diffusion barrier layer of titanium on a micropatterned silicon substrate. The effects of in situ doping by trimethylboron (TMB) on the morphologies and field emission properties of the CNs were also investigated. Straight, needlelike CNs with random orientation were obtained for 15 min growth time with or without TMB doping. However, the CNs appear to transform into diamondlike nanocrystals after prolonged growth of 30 min with TMB doping. Unlike MPCVD grown CNTs, it was found that the CNs have strong adhesion to the substrate and could withstand postgrowth processing such as ultrasonic agitation cleaning in solvents. Field emission tests performed show that in situ TMB doping of the patterned needlelike CNs lowers the turn-on field of the cathode. A vacuum field emission triode with self-aligned gate utilizing CNs as the field emitter is also fabricated. © 2006 American Vacuum Society.

Standard electrophysiology experiments utilize a technique known as voltage clamping: the surface of the cellular membrane is held constant, or clamped, which allows the researcher to study the membrane permeability and ion exchange. This process is usually performed with commercially available analog equipment. While analog circuitry provides an accurate and reliable equipment medium, it does not allow for much in the way of real-time data processing. Additionally, there is the issue of data acquisition which must be performed using an analog to digital converter (A/D). A need exists to resolve these issues in one device. The Universal Clamp, a patent pending electronic device designed and built by Dr. Jiang Wu at the University of Rhode Island, addresses this need. The Universal Clamp, however, does much more than data acquisition (DAQ) and signal processing. As the name implies, it has the capability of performing voltage clamping, current clamping, and dynamic clamping, all in one device, with the aid of a digital signal processing (DSP) chip. This functionality provides researchers greater flexibility in the types of experiments they can conduct, as well as simplifying current standard methodologies. Using the visceral ganglion from Aplysia californien, the Universal Clamp has successfully performed voltage clamping, current clamping and dynamic clamping, while simultaneously executing data acquisition and signal processing algorithms. © 2006 IEEE.

We investigate the simplest Slepian-Wolf source network, consisting of an information source correlated with a second source used as a side-information for the decoder but not the encoder. The information source and side-information source are modeled as binary random sequences X={i}Y={Yi} , respectively, for which the pairs (Xi Yi are independent- identically distributed (i.i.d). In 1973, Slepian and Wolf characterized the optimum rate at which X can be encoded so that the decoder can recover X with the aid of Y . It is only in recent years, however, that practical coding schemes have been proposed which encode at a rate close to the Slepian- Wolf rate. One such coding scheme, proposed by Ramchandran et al.[2], uses a binary linear block channel code for encoding X while the decoder is furnished with the coset for each source block. We propose an alternate coding scheme, in which we also use a linear block channel code based encoder, but instead use a decoder which minimizes distortion as measure by the per-letter expected Hamming distance between source blocks and decoded source blocks. We provide the results of computer calculations indicating the distortion improvement over the Ramchandran et al.[2] coding scheme that can be expected with our coding scheme. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on the Internet have become an immediate problem. As DDoS streams do not have common characteristics, currently available intrusion detection systems (IDS) cannot detect them accurately. As a result, defend DDoS attacks based on current available IDS will dramatically affect legitimate traffic. In this paper, we propose a distributed approach to defend against distributed denial of service attacks by coordinating across the Internet. Unlike traditional IDS, we detect and stop DDoS attacks within the intermediate network. In the proposed approach, DDoS defence systems are deployed in the network to detect DDoS attacks independently. A gossip based communication mechanism is used to exchange information about network attacks between these independent detection nodes to aggregate information about the overall network attacks observed. Using the aggregated information, the individual defence nodes have approximate information about global network attacks and can stop them more effectively and accurately. To provide reliable, rapid and widespread dissemination of attack information, the system is built as a peer to peer overlay network on top of the internet.
