Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.
US university engineeringprograms include a "senior design" course in their curricula. These courses are a student's last opportunity to use design skills learned in school. Student teams work to solve ...

The evaluation of class problems being worked and explained by the instructor and then provided via the Internet to an introductory engineering circuit analysis class, was described using problem-solving videos (PSV). The majority of the students reported their study procedure was to review the PSVs numerous times in a step-by-step approach. This indicated that the study tools provided were being used by the students to enhance their problem-solving skills on an individual basis. The results show that students can benefit, if provided study aids that are designed to address their study procedures outside of class.

This paper describes the objectives, strategies, assessment and evaluation, and special program features of the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Multi-departmentengineering and engineering Technology (MEET) Scholars program. This program began in December, 2004 and is designed to recruit, retain and graduate additional transfer students in our selected engineering and engineering technology degree programs. The MEET Scholars program represents a collaborative effort of five academic departments across two colleges, and the Enrollment Management and Career Services Division at RIT. All of the programs in the five participating departments are ABET-accredited, and require students to obtain one year of industry co-op experience before graduation. The MEET Scholars program builds upon our excellent infrastructure for mentoring students, and involves our mandatory cooperative education program - both of which help students address their financial needs and facilitate placement in the high technology workforce. RIT has an exceptional record in engineering student placement in industry after graduation and an excellent record for both retaining and graduating upper-division transfer students.

The City of El Paso is a rapidly growing community located on the US-Mexico border that has a largely Hispanic population. The region can be categorized as under-educated and socio-economically disadvantaged. For a number of reasons, most students graduating from El Paso area high schools are under-prepared in mathematics and science and thus are at a disadvantage in pursuing engineeringprograms at the post secondary level. The Texas PreFreshman engineeringprogram (TexPREP) seeks to identify high-achieving middle and high school students with interests in science, engineering and mathematics and to enhance their preparation in these fields and thus increase their likelihood of succeeding in college. TexPREP is an academically intense eight-week summer program, which stresses the development of abstract reasoning, problem solving skills, and their applications. The Pan American Center for Earth and Environmental Studies (PACES) is a NASA University Research Center on the UTEP campus. In addition to its mission to contribute research in support of NASA's Earth Science Strategic Enterprise, PACES seeks to promote science, engineering and mathematics awareness among K-12 students, especially those with minority and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In 2001, collaboration between TexPREP and PACES began with the objective of using activities with space-oriented themes as a means to stimulate student interest in science, engineering and mathematics. Over the past two summers, a variety of activities have been conducted. These include (1) Remote sensing and image interpretation, (2) CricketSat electronic telemetry device activity, (3) Protein Crystal Growth experiment, (4) Rover design competition (5) "Mission to Mars" play, and (6) Field trips to NASA facilities. This paper presents a description of these space-oriented program components and some results from the evaluation of the program.

The use of demographic data to establish baseline characteristics of first-year female engineering students is discussed. A series of three surveys conducted during the two-course sequence has provided a wealth of information that further informs the significance of the demographic and results-oriented data. Longitudinal comparison of the data helps to identify the different key differences from one year to another. Knowledge of the differences among groups of female engineering students has proven crucial to improve the retention of women.

In Fall 2000, the Clark School of engineering at the University of Maryland, in cooperation with the Smith School of Business, created a unique residential entrepreneurship educational model - the Hinman Campus Entrepreneurship Opportunities (CEOs) program. The program is based on an input/output model in which the input is undergraduate students with a strong entrepreneurial drive;the system is an incubator-like entrepreneurial community environment and a variety of resources including education, networking, teaming and mentoring;and the output is students with substantial entrepreneurial knowledge and experience in operating real companies. This paper profiles four venture models operated by current Hinman CEOs students including students who are creating both high-tech and low-tech for-profit businesses.
