An intelligent and self-sufficient robot is essential across a wide range of fields, including transportation, industry, space exploration, and defense. Mobile robots possess the capability to undertake diverse tasks such as handling materials, aiding in disaster scenarios, conducting patrols, and executing rescue operations. As a result, the development of an autonomous robot that can navigate through both unchanging and ever-changing surroundings has become important. The primary objective of mobile robot navigation revolves around ensuring the seamless and secure traversal of the robot through complex environments, starting from an initial position, and reaching a designated goal position. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Jetson Nano powered robot car which uses local sensors to interact with an unknown environment. Object following, obstacle avoidance, and wall following features are built for the car to navigate to reach its desired destinations.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a type of diabetes mellitus that attacks the retina of the eye. DR will cause patients to experience blindness slowly. Generally, DR can be detected by using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to view the inside of the eyeball. However, in conditions where there is a very small difference between the normal image and the DR image, computer-based assistance is needed for maximizing image reading value. In this research, a method of image quality improvement will be carried out which will then be integrated with a classification algorithm based on deep learning. The results of image improvement using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) shows that the average accuracy of the method on several models is very competitive, 91% for the VGG16 model, 95% for InceptionV3, and 97% for EfficientNet compared to the results original image which only has an accuracy of 87% for VGG16 model, 90% for InceptionV3 model, and 95% for EfficientNet. However, in ResNet34 better accuracy is obtained in the original image with an accuracy of 95% while in the CLAHE image the accuracy value is only 84%. The results of this comprehensive evaluation and recommendation of famous backbone networks can be useful in the computer-Aided diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. Digital phenotyping (DP) is a multidisciplinary field of science that quantifies the individual level phenotype through active and passive data. Although DP is a multidisciplinary field, there lacks a technical and a systematic approach to representing DP. This work proposes the development of digital phenotype profile (DPP) to represent a user’s physical and behavioural health baseline through systematic investigations with an emphasis on robustness and explainability. To achieve this, a Statistical, Information Theory, and Data-driven (SID) pipeline will develop the foundation of the DPP. SID evaluates the non-linearity of the signal to offer inference for domain-specific feature extraction, evaluates the information theory to rank the DPP parameters, and imputes missing data for robust analysis, respectively. SID was applied to a 24-hr Multi-Level dataset and was able to represent individual DPPs. The respective DPPs were visualized and clusters of awake and asleep were used for individual specific modelling.

On the Powerfulness of Textual Outlier Exposure for Visual OoD Detection

Successful detection of Out-of-Distribution (OoD) data is becoming increasingly important to ensure safe deployment of neural networks. One of the main challenges in OoD detection is that neural networks output overconfident predictions on OoD data, make it difficult to determine OoD-ness of data solely based on their predictions. Outlier exposure addresses this issue by introducing an additional loss that encourages low-confidence predictions on OoD data during training. While outlier exposure has shown promising potential in improving OoD detection performance, all previous studies on outlier exposure have been limited to utilizing visual outliers. Drawing inspiration from the recent advancements in vision-language pre-training, this paper venture out to the uncharted territory of textual outlier exposure. First, we uncover the benefits of using textual outliers by replacing real or virtual outliers in the image-domain with textual equivalents. Then, we propose various ways of generating preferable textual outliers. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that generated textual outliers achieve competitive performance on large-scale OoD and hard OoD benchmarks. Furthermore, we conduct empirical analyses of textual outliers to provide primary criteria for designing advantageous textual outliers: near-distribution, descriptiveness, and inclusion of visual semantics. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

A great number of deep learning-based models have been recently proposed for automatic piano classification. In this paper, we describe our contribution to the challenge of automatic piano classification when the performer performs at the concert or stage. Among these models in deep learning, we use init-1D-WaveNet and init-2D-MLNet for comparison the accuracy in the piano beginning level of the Christmas song (Jingle bells). Our experimental results show that the assessment using the init-2D-MLNet still achieve high accuracy of 87.5%.

This paper proposes a pose estimation system for robot grasping based on a novel Object Affordance Detection and Segmentation (OADS) network. The proposed system consists of four modules: (1) OADS network; (2) point cloud extraction; (3) object pose estimation; (4) grasp pose estimation. Based on the OADS network, the proposed system achieves affordance-based object pose estimation results. The proposed grasp pose estimation system is evaluated on a laboratory-made dual-arm robot. Experimental results show that the proposed system achieves high detection rate and high accuracy in affordance detection and segmentation tasks, leading to a high success rate in object grasping tasks with lab-made dual-arm robot.

The article introduces a two-dimensional polynomial regression model for the predictive analysis of glucose concentration in a fractal microwave sensor NP model, utilizing frequency and transmission coefficient differences to examine their correlation with glucose concentration levels. The sensor employed in this investigation is fabricated on an economical FR-4 substrate to minimize costs. The sensor structure is developed with the fractal structure reduction method established by the NP model to operate at a frequency of roughly 2.97 GHz. The CST Studio software is utilized to analyze the findings from the simulation of the suggested sensor structure. Furthermore, the proposed sensor is integrated into a test apparatus comprising a sensor platform and a liquid tube constructed from PPA material. The liquid under examination is a glucose and water mixture at varying concentrations. It was analyzed using a VNA instrument to evaluate its frequency response and the magnitude of the alteration in the transmission coefficient. The values are utilized to create a two-dimensional polynomial regression model. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed sensor model possesses an Adjusted R² value of 0.99499 and an average error of approximately 3.57% for glucose concentration analysis throughout the range of 5% to 30%, with sensitivities of 0.00879 dB/% for insertion loss and 0.092 MHz/% for frequency variation, facilitating accurate glucose concentration prediction analysis.

Neural Diffeomorphic Non-uniform B-spline Flows

Normalizing flows have been successfully modeling a complex probability distribution as an invertible transformation of a simple base distribution. However, there are often applications that require more than invertibility. For instance, the computation of energies and forces in physics requires the second derivatives of the transformation to be well-defined and continuous. Smooth normalizing flows employ infinitely differentiable transformation, but with the price of slow non-analytic inverse transforms. In this work, we propose diffeomorphic non-uniform B-spline flows that are at least twice continuously differentiable while bi-Lipschitz continuous, enabling efficient parametrization while retaining analytic inverse transforms based on a sufficient condition for diffeomorphism. Firstly, we investigate the sufficient condition for Ck−2-diffeomorphic non-uniform kth-order B-spline transformations. Then, we derive an analytic inverse transformation of the non-uniform cubic B-spline transformation for neural diffeomorphic non-uniform B-spline flows. Lastly, we performed experiments on solving the force matching problem in Boltzmann generators, demonstrating that our C2-diffeomorphic non-uniform B-spline flows yielded solutions better than previous spline flows and faster than smooth normalizing flows. Transparent conductive oxides exhibit attractive optical nonlinearity with ultrafast response and giant refractive index change near the epsilon-near-zero(ENZ) wavelength, originating from the intraband dynamics of conduction electrons. The optical nonlinearity of ENZ materials has been explained by using the overall-effective-mass and the overall-scattering-time of electrons in the extended Drude model. However, their response to optical excitation is yet the last building block to complete the theory. In this paper, the concept of thermal energy is theoretically proposed to account for the total energy of conduction electrons exceeding their thermal equilibrium value. The time-varying thermal energy is adopted to describe the transient optical response of indium-tin-oxide(ITO), a typical ENZ material. A spectrally-resolved femtosecond pump-probe experiment was conducted to verify our theory. By correlating the thermal energy with the pumping density, both the giant change and the transient response of the permittivity of ITO can be predicted. The results in this work provide a new methodology to describe the transient permittivities of ENZ materials, which will benefit the design of ENZ-based nonlinear photonic devices.

Connectivity of LEO Satellite Mega Constellations: An Application of Percolation Theory on a Sphere

With the advent of the 6G era, global connectivity has become a common goal in the evolution of communications, aiming to bring Internet services to more unconnected regions. Additionally, the rise of applications such as the Internet of Everything and remote education also requires global connectivity. Non-terrestrial networks (NTN), particularly low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, play a crucial role in this future vision. Although some literature already analyze the coverage performance using stochastic geometry, the ability of generating large-scale continuous service area is still expected to analyze. Therefore, in this paper, we mainly investigate the necessary conditions of LEO satellite deployment for large-scale continuous service coverage on the earth. Firstly, we apply percolation theory to a closed spherical surface and define the percolation on a sphere for the first time. We introduce the sub-critical and super-critical cases to prove the existence of the phase transition of percolation probability. Then, through stereographic projection, we introduce the tight bounds and closed-form expression of the critical number of LEO satellites on the same constellation. In addition, we also investigate how the altitude and maximum slant range of LEO satellites affect percolation probability, and derive the critical values of them. Based on our findings, we provide useful recommendations for companies planning to deploy LEO satellite networks to enhance connectivity. © 1965-2011 IEEE.
