This study aims to investigate the characteristics of Cherenkov radiation with respect to wavelength and refractive index. Refractive index is a function of wavelength, and when it changes, not only does the gain of Cherenkov radiation increase, but also the photon loss in the medium increases. Therefore, we examine how photons of different wavelengths behave under changing refractive index conditions. We adjust the refractive index to maintain a constant emission angle of Cherenkov radiation based on the deceleration rate of electrons moving in the medium. When electrons generating Cherenkov radiation move a total of 200 μm, both long-wavelength and short-wavelength photons are emitted at the initial stage; however, only short-wavelength photons are emitted at the late stage. Although the shorter-wavelength photons arrive first among the photons that reach the detector, the longer-wavelength photons are detected more, forming a significant peak, which is due to the fact that the former experience more absorption-based photon loss in the medium than the latter.

The popularity of Metaverse as an entertainment, social, and work platform has led to a great need for seamless avatar integration in the virtual world. In Metaverse, avatars must be updated and rendered to reflect users' behaviour. Achieving real-time synchronization between the virtual bilocation and the user is complex, placing high demands on the Metaverse Service Provider (MSP)'s rendering resource allocation scheme. To tackle this issue, we propose a semantic communication framework that leverages contest theory to model the interactions between users and MSPs and determine optimal resource allocation for each user. To reduce the consumption of network resources in wireless transmission, we use the semantic communication technique to reduce the amount of data to be transmitted. Under our simulation settings, the encoded semantic data only contains 51 bytes of skeleton coordinates instead of the image size of 8.243 megabytes. Moreover, we implement Deep Q-Network to optimize reward settings for maximum performance and efficient resource allocation. With the optimal reward setting, users are incentivized to select their respective suitable uploading frequency, reducing down-sampling loss due to rendering resource constraints by 66.076% compared with the traditional average distribution method. The framework provides a novel solution to resource allocation for avatar association in VR environments, ensuring a smooth and immersive experience for all users.

This paper introduces SARA, a semantic-assisted reinforced active learning framework for enhancing entity alignment (EA) under limited supervision scenarios. SARA addresses the challenges of EA in real-world scenarios, including knowledge graph heterogeneity and limited training ground truth. SARA effectively selects valuable entity pairs with limited labeled data by combining reinforced active learning and semantic information. It utilizes a pair-wise language model based on Sentence-BERT to learn informative name embeddings that capture entity name semantics. These embeddings are combined with structural embeddings and trained using a novel semantic-assisted alignment loss. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets and a real-world dataset demonstrate the superiority of SARA over existing approaches, particularly in limited labeled data scenarios. The paper also provides insights into fine-tuning strategies, presents ablation studies, and conducts sensitivity analyses to validate the effectiveness of SARA.

Measurement of small currents is often impeded by a suboptimal signal-to-noise ratio, largely due to background noise. This background noise significantly constrains the range of catalysts accessible for interrogation via micro- and nanoscale electrochemistry. In response, this work reveals how background noise scales in the presence of induced Faradaic reactions. We measured noise under a series of electrochemical conditions and discovered that the induced noise from a Faradaic reaction scales directly with current. Complementary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that diffusional resistance dictates the noise of Faradaic reactions, independent of the electrochemical mechanism. The noise source is thermal in origin and propagates in a predictable trend, which is inversely proportional to the equivalent diffusional resistance of the analyte. The universality of the observed phenomenon allows for better deconvolution of measured charge from background noise, thus assisting in achieving higher resolution and measurement precision, which is a key in micro- and nanoscale electrochemical measurements.

This paper investigates the tracking and erosion performance of silicone rubber filled with alumina trihydrate under DC dry band arcing in the inclined plane tracking and erosion test (IPT). Alumina trihydrate is incorporated into silicone rubber at 50 wt.% loading level for preparing silicone rubber composites, which are exposed to DC dry band arcing under mild and severe voltage levels in the inclined plane tracking and erosion test. Test outcomes indicate that the mechanism of silicone rubber deterioration changes with respect to the severity of the DC dry band arcing. It is found that dry band arcing tends to stimulate surface tracking under mild voltage levels and erosion due to thermal degradation under relatively higher voltage levels (critical). Moreover, test results indicate that silicone rubber erosion is not solely influenced by the dry band arcing power derived from the leakage current, but also dependent on additional contributing mechanisms leading to elevated surface temperatures and severe erosion.

Synthesis of novel material often times requires novel analysis and characterization techniques. The possibility of combining sputtering (SPU) and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) in the same chamber, Sputtering Atomic Layer Augmented Deposition (SALAD), has produced interesting meta-dielectric nanocomposite systems that have unique optical and electronic properties, which may find novel applications [1]. Scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) is a relatively novel characterization tool which permits assessment of local impedance. More recently, the utilization of microwaves in the near field regime has been an exciting topic in the field of high-resolution microscopy. We were able to demonstrate 1 nm resolution using scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) where a spontaneously forming water meniscus concentrated the microwave fields in small regions [2]. Here we analyzed numerically sMIM with Finite Element Method (FEM) to investigate complex metal-dielectric structures created in a SALAD system. sMIM measurements provide information on both real and imaginary parts of the reflected microwave signal, which can be associated with the local conductivity and permittivity. Yet, these quantities can be influenced by the local topography, so extraction of the electronic contribution is a challenge. In this work, we perform tip-surface distance scans in order to gain a better understanding of the substrate response and compare with the FEM results. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. In this paper we consider the modeling of measurement error for fund returns data. In particular, given access to a time-series of discretely observed log-returns and the associated maximum over the observation period, we develop a stochastic model which models the true log-returns and maximum via a Lévy process and the data as a measurement error there-of. The main technical difficulty of trying to infer this model, for instance Bayesian parameter estimation, is that the joint transition density of the return and maximum is seldom known, nor can it be simulated exactly. Based upon the novel stick breaking representation of [12] we provide an approximation of the model. We develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to sample from the Bayesian posterior of the approximated posterior and then extend this to a multilevel MCMC method which can reduce the computational cost to approximate posterior expectations, relative to ordinary MCMC. Recent studies of genotype-phenotype maps have reported universally enhanced phenotypic robustness to genotype mutations, a feature essential to evolution. Virtually all of these studies make a simplifying assumption that each genotype—represented as a sequence—maps deterministically to a single phenotype, such as a discrete structure. Here we introduce probabilistic genotype-phenotype (PrGP) maps, where each genotype maps to a vector of phenotype probabilities, as a more realistic and universal language for investigating robustness in a variety of physical, biological, and computational systems. We study three model systems to show that PrGP maps offer a generalized framework which can handle uncertainty emerging from various physical sources: (1) thermal fluctuation in RNA folding, (2) external field disorder in the spin-glass ground state search problem, and (3) superposition and entanglement in quantum circuits, which are realized experimentally on IBM quantum computers. In all three cases, we observe a biphasic robustness scaling which is enhanced relative to random expectation for more frequent phenotypes and approaches random expectation for less frequent phenotypes. We derive an analytical theory for the behavior of PrGP robustness, and we demonstrate that the theory is highly predictive of empirical robustness.

Chiral nematic or cholesteric liquid crystals (LCs) are fluid mesophases with long-ranged orientational order featuring a quasilayered periodicity imparted by a helical director configuration but lacking long-range positional order. Doping molecular cholesteric LCs with strongly anisotropic uniaxial colloidal particles adds another level of complexity because of the interplay between weak surface-anchoring boundary conditions and bulk-based elastic distortions near the particle-LC interface. Using cylindrical colloidal disks and rods with different geometric shapes and surface conditions, we demonstrate that these colloidal inclusions generically exhibit biaxial orientational probability distributions which may impart anomalously strong local biaxiality onto the hybrid cholesteric LC structure. Unlike nonchiral hybrid molecular-colloidal LCs, where biaxial order emerges only at critical colloid volume fractions exceeding some uniaxial-biaxial transition value, the orientational probability of the colloidal inclusions immersed in chiral nematic hosts is unambiguously biaxial even at infinite dilution. We demonstrate that the colloids induce local biaxial perturbations within the molecular orientational order of the LC host medium which strongly enhances the weak but native biaxial order of chiral nematic LC induced by the chiral symmetry breaking of the director field. With the help of analytical modeling and computer simulations based on the Landau–de Gennes free energy of the host LC around the colloids, we rationalize the observed multilevel biaxial order and conclude that it is not only unavoidable but also strongly enhanced compared to both achiral hybrid LCs and purely molecular cholesteric LCs.
