Deep learning methods for noisy sperm image classification from convolutional neural network to visual transformer:a comprehensive comparative study

Background With the gradual increase of infertility in the world,among which male sperm problems are the main factor for infertility,more and more couples are using computer-assisted sperm analysis(CASA)to assist in the analysis and treatment of ***,the rapid development of deep learning(DL)has led to strong results in image classification ***,the classification of sperm images has not been well studied in current deep learning methods,and the sperm images are often affected by noise in practical CASA *** purpose of this article is to investigate the anti-noise robustness of deep learning classification methods applied on sperm *** The SVIA dataset is a publicly available large-scale sperm dataset containing three *** this work,we used subset-C,which provides more than 125,000 independent images of sperms and impurities,including 121,401 sperm images and 4,479 impurity *** investigate the anti-noise robustness of deep learning classification methods applied on sperm images,we conducted a comprehensive comparative study of sperm images using many convolutional neural network(CNN)and visual transformer(VT)deep learning methods to find the deep learning model with the most stable anti-noise *** This study proved that VT had strong robustness for the classification of tiny object(sperm and impurity)image datasets under some types of conventional noise and some adversarial *** particular,under the influence of Poisson noise,accuracy changed from 91.45%to 91.08%,impurity precison changed from 92.7%to 91.3%,impurity recall changed from 88.8%to 89.5%,and impurity F1-score changed 90.7%to 90.4%.Meanwhile,sperm precision changed from 90.9%to 90.5%,sperm recall changed from 92.5%to 93.8%,and sperm F1-score changed from 92.1%to 90.4%.Conclusion Sperm image classification may be strongly affected by noise in current deep learning methods;the robustness with regard to noise of VT methods based

Background and purpose: Skin tumours have become one of the most common diseases worldwide. While benign ones are not usually a threat to human health, malignant ones can develop into skin cancer and become life-threatening if left untreated. Early detection of the disease is important for the treatment of patients with skin tumours and dermoscopy is the most effective means of diagnosing skin tumours. However, the complexity of skin tumour cells makes the diagnosis somewhat erroneous for doctors. Therefore, a dermoscopic classification network based on deep learning and computer-aided diagnostic techniques is needed to obtain a high diagnostic accuracy rate for skin tumours. Methods: In this paper, Deep-skin, a model for dermoscopic image classification is proposed, which is based on both attention mechanism and ensemble learning. Considering the characteristics of dermoscopic images, embedding different attention mechanisms on top of Inception-V3 has been suggested to obtain more potential features. We then improve the classification performance by late fusion of the different models. To demonstrate the effectiveness of Deep-skin, experiments and evaluations are performed on the publicly available dataset Skin Cancer: Malignant vs. Benign and compare the performance of Deep-skin with other classification models. Results: The experimental results indicate that Deep-skin performs well on the dataset in comparison to other models, achieving a maximum accuracy of 87.8%.Conclusion: In this paper, the Deep-skin model is proposed for the classification of dermoscopic images and has shown better performance. In the future, we intend to investigate better classification models for automatic diagnosis of skin tumours. Such models can potentially assist physicians and patients in clinical settings. © 2023 IEEE.

Independent Vector analysis (IVA) is a popular extension of Independent Component analysis (ICA) for joint separation of a set of instantaneous linear mixtures, with a direct application in frequency-domain speaker separation or extraction. The mixtures are parameterized by mixing matrices, one matrix per mixture. This means that the IVA mixing model does not account for any relationships between parameters across the mixtures/frequencies. The separation proceeds jointly only through the source model, where statistical dependencies of sources across the mixtures are taken into account. In this paper, we propose a mixing model for joint blind source extraction where the mixing model parameters are linked across the frequencies. This is achieved by constraining the set of feasible parameters to the manifold of half-length separating filters, which has a clear interpretation and application in frequency-domain speaker extraction. © 2023 European signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Hypertension is a serious medical condition that affects over a billion people worldwide. The proper management of disease progression requires an extended knowledge of the overall functional and structural changes in the whole body in response to the hypertension. Here, we propose HyperScore, an integrative and unified measure of hypertension progression relative to multi-organ and multi-modality clinical measurements and based on a semi-supervised machine learning (ML) approach. We developed the measure based on a large participating cohort from the UK Biobank database (n=27,099) with over 500 imaging and clinical variables from multiple modalities. The semi-supervised approach was developed based on the contrastive trajectory inference mechanism to provide a score that reflects the proximity of a participant to the disease state (range: 0-1). Modelling revealed that majority of hypertensive participants had scores above 0.25, whereas normotensives had scores below this threshold. The sensitivity and specificity were above 89%, with an area under the receiver operating characteristics of 96.4%. The modelling showed a stable performance when evaluating hidden testing sets on a 10-fold cross-validation scheme with nearly 0.1 error. There was a strong association (r2>0.6) between HyperScore and organs' phenotypic patterns, especially for variables such as white matter hyperintensity and body mass index. This study is the first to potentiate ML-based modelling of hypertension progression from a multi-organ perspective, which could significantly aid in clinical decision making to save lives. © 2023 IEEE.

Palmprint recognition has emerged as a prominent biometric technology, widely applied in diverse scenarios. Traditional handcrafted methods for palmprint recognition often fall short in representation capability, as they heavily depend on researchers' prior knowledge. Deep learning (DL) has been introduced to address this limitation, leveraging its remarkable successes across various domains. While existing surveys focus narrowly on specific tasks within palmprint recognition-often grounded in traditional methodologies-there remains a significant gap in comprehensive research exploring DL-based approaches across all facets of palmprint recognition. This paper bridges that gap by thoroughly reviewing recent advancements in DL-powered palmprint recognition. The paper systematically examines progress across key tasks, including region-of-interest segmentation, feature extraction, and security/privacy-oriented challenges. Beyond highlighting these advancements, the paper identifies current challenges and uncovers promising opportunities for future research. By consolidating state-of-the-art progress, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, enabling them to stay abreast of cutting-edge technologies and drive innovation in palmprint recognition. Machine Learning (ML) models trained on biased data can reproduce and even amplify these biases. Since such models are deployed to make decisions that can affect people's lives, ensuring their fairness is critical. One approach to mitigate possible unfairness of ML models is to map the input data into a less-biased new space by means of training the model on fair representations. Several methods based on adversarial learning have been proposed to learn fair representation by fooling an adversary in predicting the sensitive attribute (e.g., gender or race). However, adversarial-based learning can be too difficult to optimize in practice; besides, it penalizes the utility of the representation. Hence, in this research effort we train bias-free representations from the input data by inducing a uniform distribution over the sensitive attributes in the latent space. In particular, we propose a probabilistic framework that learns these representations by enforcing the correct reconstruction of the original data, plus the prediction of the attributes of interest while eliminating the possibility of predicting the sensitive ones. Our method leverages the inability of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to generalize when trained on a noisy label space to regularize the latent space. We use a network head that predicts a noisy version of the sensitive attributes in order to increase the uncertainty of their predictions at test time. Our experiments in two datasets demonstrated that the proposed model significantly improves fairness while maintaining the prediction accuracy of downstream tasks.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of memory loss that worsens over time. Detecting it early, when memory issues are mild, is crucial for effective interventions. Recent advancements in computer technology, specifically Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), have proven to be powerful tools for analyzing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data comprehensively. In this study, we developed a GCN framework for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by examining the functional connectivity (FC) derived from resting-state functional MRI (rfMRI) data. Our research systematically explored various types and processing methods of FC, evaluating their performance on the OASIS-3 dataset. The experimental results revealed several key findings. On the one hand, the proposed GCN exhibited significantly superior performance over both the baseline GCN and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) models, with statistically significant differences. It attained the highest average accuracy of 80.3% and a peak accuracy of 88.2%. On the other hand, the GCN frame work obtained using individual FCs showed overall slightly better performance than the one using global FCs. However, it is important to note that GCNs using global networks with appropriate connectivity can achieve comparable or even better performance than individual networks in certain cases. Finally, our results also indicate that the connectivity within specific brain regions, such as VIS, DMN, SMN, VAN, and FPC, may play a more significant role in GCN-based MRI classification for MCI diagnosis. These findings significantly contribute to the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders and offer valuable insights into the diverse ap plications of GCNs in brain analysis and disease detection. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.
